Assignment 3
Site Suitability Analysis Using GIS
Project Report
Introduction
The purpose of this project was to search for a location that will be suitable for a new daycare center.
Criteria of Site Selection
The criteria for the site selection were as follows:
1. It must be in a census tract with a population density greater than or equal to five person per acre.
2. It must be located in censustractswith at least 10 percentof the population with ages6 and below.
3. It must be located in census tracts with medium and annual household income of at least $35000
4. It must be 1 mile away from existing daycare centers.
Methodology
The methodology that was used included joining the attribute tables of the census and the tracts layer with
the common ID specified as CT1/ Tracts_W and dividing the total population by the total number of acres.
While using the select from attributes option on ArcMap, I had specified the population to be at least 5
persons per acre, the population to be at least 10 percent of ages 6 and below, and the medium annual
household to be at least $35000. I had createda 1 mile buffer betweeneachdaycare center using the analysis
tools from Arc toolbox. After completing the buffer inputs, a new daycare center can be established outside
of the cluster of buffers that are present within the map.
Results and recommendations
Based on the results on the map, the recommendation was to mark a point on the map which falls outside
the buffer zone. This new mark satisfies the conditions as to where to create a new daycare center.
3. Appendix:
1. What is the common ID from the two tables?
CT1/ Tracts_W
2. Write your calculation equation here.
[TOT_POP] / [ACRES]
3. List the coordination system of each file.
Daycare:
Projected Coordinate System: Clarke_1866_UTM_Zone_12
Geographic Coordinate System: GCS_Clarke_1866
Roads:
Projected Coordinate System: NAD_1983_StatePlane_Texas_North_Central_FIPS_4202_Feet
Geographic Coordinate System: GCS_North_American_1983
Tract:
Projected Coordinate System: NAD_1983_StatePlane_Texas_North_Central_FIPS_4202_Feet
Geographic Coordinate System: GCS_North_American_1983
4. Based on the information you obtain from the above step, what would be the best way to complete
this step?
You have to select the layer of the Daycare. You would then go to arc toolbox, select data
management tools, projections and transformations, and project. You would click layer and then
change the coordinate system from Clarke_1866_UTM_Zone_12/ GCS_Clarke_1866 to
NAD_1983_StatePlane_Texas_North_Central_FIPS_4202_Feet/ GCS_North_American_1983
5. Describe in detail the steps you performed in step #8. Specify the overlay option, input layer, and
output layer.
You would go to Arc Toolbox, select analysis tools, and specify the overlay to be union. The input
layer would be the new daycare shape file (point) and the output layer would be the daycare buffer
(polygon)
6. Describe in detail the input layer and query options that you used in step #9.
The input layer is the daycare shape file with the points system that are scattered across the map
and are at least 1 mile apart.
The query for the data are
Select by Attributes, select New tracts from the layer, Create a new selection, use the equation
Pop_Densit>=5
Select by attributes, select from current selection, use the equation:
PERCENT_LE>=10
Select by attributes, select from current selection, use the equation:
Med_HH_Inc>=35000
7. What is the final option?
The final option came down to the area with CTI of 319005, with the tract id, 431, median
household income of 46103, population density of 8 person per acre and has an acre of 640.71.
8. If you were to recommend a site within the area of your final option, what other factors would you
also consider? Why?
4. 9. I would recommend a site that is not within the buffer zone because they would fall outside of the
1 mile radius in which the daycare centers are already existent.
10. What is the name of the new daycare center file?
New Daycare Center
11. Describe the changes you have made for the features and the attribute table.
I createda new address of the daycare center in the attribute table and it is reflected as that is outside
of the 1 mile buffer zone.
