2. FABRIKAM 2
LET’S LEARN
Study the following example and compare them.
Example 1. A = {blue, red, yellow}
B = {a, e, i}
C = {e, i, a}
Set B and Set C are equal sets. They have exactly the same elements.
Set A and Set B are equivalent sets. They have the same cardinality but not
equally the same elements.
Set A and Set C are equivalent sets.
3. FABRIKAM 3
Example 2. A = { x / x is a whole number less than 8} = {1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7}
B = { 2, 4, 6, 8, 10}
C = { 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 }
Set A and Set B are joint sets because it has common elements 2, 4, and 6.
Set B and Set C also joint sets, because it has common element 10.
Set A and Set C are disjoint sets because they don’t have common element.
Example 3. M = { x / x is a counting number between 11 and 12 }
M is an empty set.
Thus, M = ∅ or M = { }
R = { x / x is a a counting number divisible by 5 between 11 and 15 } =12, 13, 14
R = ∅ or { }
5. FABRIKAM 5
I. State equal if the sets are equal and equivalent if the sets are
equivalent.
1. M = { x / x is a whole number less than 10 but greater than 8 }
N = { x / x is an even prime number }
Answer: equivalent
2. O = { paper, book, pencil}
P = { pencil, book, paper}
Answer: equal
6. FABRIKAM 6
3. Q = { x / x is a whole number greater than 5 but less than 9 }
R = { b, f, g }
Answer: equivalent
4. G = { 0, 2, 4, 6, 8}
H = { 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 }
Answer: equivalent
5. I = { , , }
J = { , , }
Answer: equal
