The Samburu Project, whose primary goals are to fund
water and water-related opportunities in communities in
the Samburu District of Northern Kenya, continues to
help provide the foundations of a better life for the
Samburu people. In September 2011, thanks in part to a
generous donation from the Nimick Forbesway
Foundation, The Samburu Project drilled and equipped a
shallow well at Sereolipi Primary School.
2011 Impact Report to the Nimick Forbesway Foundation
Prepared by: Marie Javdani, Program Director
Project: 2011 Well Drill – Sereolipi Primary School
Start/End Date: August 10 – October 12, 2011
Purpose: Provide clean, safe drinking water for the
students of Sereolipi Primary School and
the community at large.
How has the grant impacted the relative
quality of life of the people we serve?
•The 750 students of Sereolipi Primary
School, along with faculty, staff, and
community members, now have access
to clean, safe drinking water.
•Students no longer have to search for
water, carrying it for kilometers to home
and to school.
•With clean water comes decreased
incidence of illness and more
opportunities for successful livelihoods.
•Students can now study without
spending time fetching water or missing
school because of water-bourne illness.
•Water is now available in abundance
for drinking, cooking, washing and
farming.
Students working as a team to bring water to their school.
In closing, The Samburu Project wishes to sincerely
thank the Nimick-Forbesway Foundation for your
continued support, allowing us to help improve men,
women and children’s daily lives in Samburu District,
Kenya.
What are our plans for the project in the future?
The Samburu Project remains committed to supporting
communities through wells and other water-related
projects. Potential future projects at Sereolipi Primary
School include:
•School gardening: this will provide students with
nutritious dietary variety, as well as the opportunity to
learn sustainable farming practices.
•Based on the success of the Pittsburgh Walk for
Water, we plan to make this an annual event,
increasing awareness of this severe need and raising
funds for future wells.
Challenges and Lessons Learned
Upon our arrival at the Sereolipi community, we
found that another organization had previously
promised to build a well, only to back out later.
Because of this, community members were
skeptical about our project. However, our project
manager, after spending time discussing the
matter
