What is stress:
Stress is defined as a state of mental or emotional
tension resulting from adverse circumstances.
It distracts our physical or mental equilibrium, yet
it’s a normal and universal part of life.
Stress causes some physical effects , as the body
considers itself under attack when being under
stress which then leads to a switch in its position to
fight mode.
There are two types of stress, the
Eustress or positive stress and the
Distress or negative stress
Stress releases sets of hormones and chemicals
such as adrenaline. Stress is not necessarily a
“bad thing”.
It has been recognized that without stress people
wouldn’t have survived.
The releasing of the hormone ancestors a blast of
energy which prepared him to either fight the tiger
or run away.
Those hormones enable us to focus our
attention so we can quickly respond to the
situation.
A common example:- Reacting to a
person running in front of our car by
slamming on the brakes
Stress enhances your thinking as well as it
increases your brain activates.
A challenging thing
about stress is
when the human
body stresses in the
wrong situations.
Those effects are
mainly an inability
to think straight.
This state causes a
huge limitation in
both work and
home lives.
Another myth is that stress is the same for everyone.
Which on the other hand is not true because every
person has his own limits and edges in handling things.
Every person handles and reacts to stress in a different
way.
Causes of Stress:
The situations and pressures that cause
stress are known as stressors. We usually
think of stressors as being negative, such
as an exhausting work schedule or a bad
relationship. However, anything that puts
high demands on you can be stressful. This
includes positive events such as getting
married, buying a house, going to college,
or receiving a promotion.
Causes of work stress include:
Being unhappy in your job
Having a heavy workload or too much responsibility.
Working for long hours, night shifts.
Having poor management, unclear expectations of
your work, or no say in the decision-making process
Facing discrimination or harassment at work, especially
if your company is not supportive.
As known not all stress is caused by external factors. Stress can
also be internal or self-generated, worrying excessively about
something that may or may not happen, or having hopeless
thoughts about life.
Everyone has different stress triggers. Work stress tops the
list, according to surveys. Forty percent of U.S. workers admit
to experiencing office stress, and one-quarter say work is the
biggest source of stress in their lives.
Sometimes the stress comes from
inside, rather than outside. You can
stress yourself out just
by worrying about things.
Effects of
stress:
Stress has some very negative
effects on our bodies. Some of the
effects are physical, some are
mood-related, and some affect our
behavior. Recognizing these effects
can help us realize that all these
problems have an underlying
cause, which is stress.
Physical effects:
The physical effects of stress on our
bodies include headaches, muscle
pain, chest pain, and upset stomach.
In some cases it also affects our sleep
and causes problems like insomnia,
nightmares, and disturbing dreams.
Stress also takes a lot of energy from
our bodies and this causes fatigue.
Other physical effects include:
constipation, diarrhea, & dizziness.
Mood-related effects:
Stress also has some debilitating effects on
our moods.
It can cause restlessness, irritability, anger,
anxiety, and feeling overwhelmed.
In severe cases it can also cause a lack of
motivation and even sadness or depression.
Stress also makes it difficult for us to
concentrate and leads to forgetfulness.
It also impedes our ability to make good
decisions, and can cloud/impair our
judgement.
Behavior effects:
Stress affects our behavior in a negative way
as well.
It can affect our appetite and can cause
overeating or under-eating.
Effects of stress on social behavior include
isolation & withdrawal.
Stress can also induce angry outbursts during
which the person might do something
he/she regrets.
In addition, stress sometimes leads to drug
or alcohol abuse.
Extremely stressed individuals may even
resort to suicide as the last option.
Diseases linked to stress:
Stress can have an aggravating effect on
almost all diseases.
It has been linked to heart attacks, stroke,
hypertension, and immune system
disorders such as autoimmune disease.
Stress can affect our skin, it can cause
rashes, hives, and can worsen acne.
Stress can worsen viral disorders ranging
from common cold to AIDS.
Stress also plays a role in degenerative
disorders like Parkinson's disease.
Stress
Prevention
Stress is a part of our daily lives, in which we
can’t completely avoid it. We should not let
stress control our life; instead we should learn
how to cope with it. The first step is to
acknowledge the source of the stress in our life,
and the second step is to start applying the
needed changes to avoid the stressful
situations.
LIFESTYLE:
Your way of living does not affect your stress
level directly, such as causing or preventing it.
On the other hand, it can either help you
recover from the stress or prevent recovering
completely.
SUPPORT:
Receiving support from your family or
your friends can help you remain solid
through your stressful phases in your
life. It can include love, trust, or even
advice from others to help guide you all
the way. On the other hand, support can
be acquired from materialistic things,
such as money or time. This might
include directly asking for help, which
some might take as a degrading factor.
THINKING:
Stressful events might result in constant
negative thinking, which might lead to
depression, anxiety, and higher stress levels.
You might also encounter feeling afraid,
insecure, lack of control, and lower self-worth
and self-esteem. There are several ways to deal
with this negative thinking to reduce your
stress levels. Some of these ways include
cognitive-behavior therapy (choosing to
change the way you think to cope with your
problems in a healthier way), problem solving
(Helps you differentiate between the things
you are able to change and the irreversible
things that you have to deal with over time),
and assertive communication (expressing your
feelings, needs, and concerns in a healthier
way).
We're all different. Some people seem to be able
to roll with life’s punches, while others tend to
crumble in the face of small obstacles or
frustrations. Some people even thrive on the
excitement of a high-stress lifestyle. Your stress
level will differ based on your personality and
how you respond to situations. Everyday is a new
beginning, take a deep breath and start your day
without stress.
