A few words about our hometown…
Messolonghi is a historical town (capital of Aitoloakarnania prefecture in
Western Greece) and was founded in the 13th century by Dalmatian
pirates taking its name from the Italian phrase "messo laghi" meaning "a
town between lakes".
Built next to the lagoon, one of the most important wetlands, and between
two rivers, Evinos and Acheloos, our town is a major tourist attraction of
exceptional natural beauty.

Messolonghi played an important role in the history of Greece from the
Archaic period to the Roman and Byzantine period. The most glorious
page in the history of Messolonghi was the heroic sortie of its inhabitants
(April 10th, 1826) after a siege by the Turks lasting several months which
shocked the world and inspired major artists from around the world
(Delacroix, Goethe, Lord Byron, etc.).
The English poet and philhellene Lord Byron came to Messolonghi to
devote his talent as well as his fortune to the Greek revolution.
Messolonghi is known as the site of the most dramatic siege during the
Greek War of Independence and of the death of poet Lord Byron (April
19, 1824).

Monuments such as the Gate of Exodus, the Garden of Heroes, the home
of English poet and philhellene Lord Byron, the printing press of the
newspaper "Greek Chronicles" of James Mayer, Swiss philhellene and
author of the first printed newspaper about the fight, are scattered within
the city.
Messolonghi is the birthplace of great authors (Kostis Palamas, Miltiadis
Malakasis and Antonis Travlantonis) as well as of five prime ministers.
Due to its glorious cultural and historical past, Messolonghi was named
“Sacred Town” in 1937.
