1. Heritage Building and Site
“Heritage Building” is a building possessing architectural, aesthetic, historic or
cultural values which is declared as heritage building by the Planning
Authority/Heritage conservation committee or any other Competent Authority
in whose jurisdiction such building is situated.
“Heritage Sites” shall generally include buildings, artifacts, structures, streets,
areas and precincts of historic or archaeological or aesthetic or architectural or
cultural significance which are at least 100 years old.
2. Importance of Heritage Buildings
With respect to culture, old buildings help us to understand the history that
occurred before we were born and promotes the respect for those who lived in
prior times and different traditions. Historical buildings bring character and charm
to the neighborhood that people live in.
Such Buildings and Sites need conservation.
Since India has many monuments and heritage sites, the need to conserve them
has become imperative as these buildings carry archaeological, historical and
artistic value. To conserve the heritage sites, different techniques are employed
under the supervision of dedicated experts.
3. Who is Responsible for Indian Heritage Buildings
and Sites
The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), under the Department of Culture,
Ministry of Tourism and Culture, is the premier organization for the archaeological
researches and protection of the cultural heritage of the nation.
At the central level, nationally protected monuments fall under the jurisdiction of
the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). It is responsible for archaeological
research, conservation and preservation of around 3,650 monuments categorized
as “national heritage”.
Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), National Culture Fund (NCF) and NBCC
(National Buildings Construction Corporation) signed a MoU for the Conservation,
development & maintenance of ‘Purana Qila project’ at New Delhi.

Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH)
INTACH was established in 1984 and it continues till date. Its main
aim is to promote and preserve the cultural heritage for younger
generations in order to provide opportunities for the youth to grasp the
beauty and dignity of Indian history. This autonomous organization takes
care of monuments built across India. Other than preserving the
historical monuments domestically, it also works internationally in
Belgium, United Kingdom and United States.
5. National Center for Performing Arts (NCPA)
It is one of the very famous non-profit organizations working in the field of
promoting Indian art and culture. Their theater compiles the native traditions and
rituals to unify the diverse cultures. Music, dance, acts and other performances
capture works from many legends of India to international artistic figures. Situated
in Mumbai, it is considered as the premier organization for which it was awarded
the first “Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (SIRO)” in the field of
music research.
Society For The Promotion of Indian Classical Music And Culture
Amongst Youth (SPIC MACAY)
This organization focuses on strengthening classical and philosophical art.
It not only works on promoting the classical artwork but also ties
memorable myths with legendary works of the past. All of this work done
by SPIC MACAY, is certainly helping present generations to realize the deep
rooted values of classical and philosophical art.
6. Indian Numismatic Historical and Cultural Research Foundation (INHCRF)
Numismatic is the study of coins, and INHCRF is one of the most prominent
organizations highlighting history through designs of coins. Coins from the ancient
times reflect various historic events, their administrative technique and economic
cycle. With the aim of exploring history of Indian revolutions, INHCRF also create
awareness through workshops, exhibitions and presentations on promoting the
fundamental value of numismatics and its importance in Indian culture and
society.
Kalamandir
Another famous NGO, Kalamandir, works to attain “Social synergy and Human
harmony” through the exchange of tribal arts, culture and music. Kalamandir was
established in 1997 and now it operates in the provinces of Jharkhand. The main
goal of this organization is to offer a platform for exchange of culture between
different societies. Exchange in culture revives folk and regional heritage and
highlights the importance of folk and tribal art forms belonging to each traits.

The heritage bye-laws include matters relating to heritage controls such as
- Elevations - Facades - Drainage Systems - Roads - Service
- Infrastructure (Including Electric Poles , Water and Sewer Pipelines)
for areas around such monuments.
8. PROHIBITED AREA : The area beginning with the limit of the Protected
Area or the Protected Monument and extending to a distance of 100
Meters in all directions. So , no new construction is allowed within 100
Meters from the Protected Area or the Protected Monument in all
directions.
REGULATED AREA : The area beginning at the limit of the Prohibited
Area and extending to a distance of 200 Meters in all directions. Height
restriction in this Regulated Area is 18 Meters. So , low rise construction
is allowed in this Regulated Area.
The Site is 230 Meters West to the Purana Qila.
