INTRODUCTION
The ostomy means an opening
which is made during surgery that
brings a piece of the bowel to the
abdomen.

DEFINITION
Colostomy is an opening. ,called a
stoma in the large intestine brought
to the surface of the abdomen for the
evacuation of the bowel
TYPESOF
COLOSTOMY
ACCORDINGTO DURATION:
 Permanent colostomy
 Temporary colostomy
ACCORDINGTO POSITION:
 Asending colostomy
 Transverse colostomy
 Descending colostomy
INDICATION
Birth defect
Inflammatory bowel disease
Injury to the colon or rectum
Partial or complete intestine blockage
Wound or fistula in peritoneum
Colon or rectum cancer
PURPOSEOF
COLOSTOMY
CARE
 To maintain integrity of stoma and peristomal
skin
 To prevent infection
 To promote general comfort and positive self
image
 To provide clean colostomy pouch for fecal
evacuation
 To prevent bad odor
Tray
preparation:
Equipments
A clean tray containing-
1. Maikintosh
2. Screen
3. Colostomy bag
4. Kidney tray & paper
bag
5. Pair of clean gloves
6. NS water
Rational
1. To prevent soling of
bed
2. To maintain privacy
3. To change the
previous bag
4. To discard waste
material
5. To prevent cross
infection
6. To clean the stoma
site
6.Gauze piece
7. Gauze pad
8. Skin barrier stoma
9 .stoma measuring
guide
10.Bed pan
6.To clean the area
7.To apply on the skin
8.To protect the skin
9. For the measurements
of the stoma
10.For discard the
excreta
PROCEDURE
PROCEDURE
 Gather the equipments
 Explain the procedure
to the patient.
 Provide privacy to the
patient
 Assess the stoma
condition
 Performed hand was &
wear the gloves
RATIONAL
 To perform the
procedure properly
 To gain confidence of
the patient
 To smooth performance
of the procedure
 To prevent infection
 Spread the makintosh
 Removed the used
pouch and skin barrier
gently by pushing skin
away from the barrier
 Remove the clamp and
discard the waste to
the bed pan .Rinse with
NS .
 Discard the used pouch
 To protect the linen
 To prevent
trauma,jerking and tear
of the skin
 To minmize the odor
and growth of microbes
 Observe the stoma for
color,trauma,swelling
and healing
 Cover the stoma with a
gauze piece
 Clean the peristomal
skin with NS and gauze
piece. Dry the skin by
patting
 Remove the gauze
piece and clean the
stoma with gauze
 To find out
complication
 The prevention the
contamination of
fecal material with
the skin
 To protect the
stoma surface
 -Do -
 Apply the the new
pouch by measuring
the size by measuring
guide
 Apply the gauze pad to
the peristomal skin and
stick with skin barrier
to fix the bag
 Use the previous pouch
if it is drainble with
clamp or clip
 Remove the glovesand
wash hand
 Discard waste material
and replace all the
articles.
DOCUMENTATION
:
Record the procedure with the following
details:
Date and time
Amount
Color
And consistancy of the fecal material
Sign of any infection
CONCLUSION
Colostomy Is a surgically opening in
the intestine. It may be temporary or
permanent.The pouch ,skin and
surrounding require care and
maintenance by the Care giver or
patient
