1. Pick a part of the Media industry e.g magazine publishing; radio broadcasting; television production; film
production; film distribution; game development.
Create a job profile from a range of jobs in that sector- it is a good idea to include an entry level role e.g TV
runner and a senior role e.g TV Drama Director. You must include 3-5 job role profiles.
Each profile should include:
1. Job description (including if it is generally freelance or full time)
2. Skills required
3. How to get into the role (education, application process- this link takes you to job profiles for various sectors
and gives you an idea of entry requirements and salaries; this link is specifically for TV and Media job profiles;
see this link for entry requirements for a TV producer; there are also relevant job profiles in the Creative Art
and Design section such as photographer)
4. Companies and contexts where this job is required (e.g what companies hire TV directors and what products
might they make- give examples.)
5. Salary
6. Explain how these jobs are multi-skilled and what that involves- what skills do you need?
7. An explanation as to how the aspects of professional behaviour are important and expected in the jobs you
have chosen- : attendance and punctuality; commitment; efficiency; self-presentation; communication skills;
contribution to team projects; time management; personal responsibility you don’t have to write about each
job individually and can deal with them as a whole.
Task 1 – Job Profiling
2. Example Job Profile
A post production supervisor’s job is organizational. Their job is to make sure that the technical post-
production on a film or TV programme is completed on schedule and is within budget. Part of their role
is to ensure they are maintaining clarity of information between all major parties involved in the film,
such as the supervising sound editor, the producer and the facilties companies (CGI studios etc)
This job can be stressful, so it requires empathy and an ability to make difficult decisions under
pressure. There are large amounts of money involved, and because most of the film’s budget is spent
during production, managing finances during the post-production period can be challenging.
They have to work with the production accountant and supply accurate information on cost reports,
which are prepared every 3-4 weeks to show how actual expenditure compares to the original budget.
They may be involved in a number of films at one time and are employed on a freelance basis by the
producer for a fixed term period. They will need to be able to work to tight deadlines and make tough
decisions under pressure. They usually work independently, but may employ an assistant. They will
continue to work on the production until all the elements needed for the production are in place.
