This document describes a student project to create a retrofit break wear indicator device. A team of 4 students led by Professor Veeresh Gunjalli aims to build a device that monitors the condition of break pads in order to prevent accidents caused by break failure. The device would use principles of friction between the break pads and disk to indicate wear as the break pads decrease in thickness due to use and friction over time.

2. Now a days there is increase in vehicle rate , hence
there is increase in accidents .
Accident causes due to uneven road conditions , over-
speed , drink and drive , break failure , etc..
The major accidents are due to break failure caused by
wearing of break pads ,so far we came across with a
device called “ BREAK WEAR INDICATOR “ .

3. • To build a Retro-Fit device to monitor the condition of break
pad.
• Testing the condition of breakpads in break assembly using
indication device.
• To prevent the accidents caused by break failure.

4. Friction is the action of one surface or object rubbing against
another .
 In break system we have two components disk and break pads.
When we apply break there is a frction between break pad and
disk takes place which leads to slow down the vehical.

5. Due to extrusion and friction, the high temperature occurs
on the friction pair at high-speed and heavy-load
conditions, and there is a serious wear on the friction
contact . In 1953, the classical Archard wear theory was
proposed by J.Archard. The calculation equation is as
follows :
V=(K*P*L)/H
Where, V = wear volume
P = normal force of the contact surface
L = relative sliding distance
H = material hardness
K = dimensionless wear coefficient
