Have you ever been tasked with supporting staff in teaching online when face-to-face classes have been cancelled? In difficult circumstances, campus-based activities could be suspended indefinitely due to a significant environmental, health or socio-political impact. In these extreme cases, online teaching can provide a form of emergency management and continuity of teaching and learning. This type of support was needed during the campus shutdowns of 2016 and 2017 caused by student protests that affected South African higher education institutions nationwide. In this session, colleagues from the University of Cape Town (UCT) will share issues, tools and solutions provided to support academic staff required to teach online during those difficult times. The session is designed to provide an example case, but also learn from others. During this Meetup, Concordia and INM discussed Concordia’s experience with re-platforming over 300 websites over to Adobe Experience Manager (AEM) and the various steps involved in making this happen. Concordia gave some background on their past website and digital landscape before the move over to AEM. Then they provided insights on why the decision to move over to AEM and what factors went into selecting the tool and their experience since making the upgrade. INM then shared about the various stages required for a project of this magnitude, such as: -Gathering user requirements by interviewing stakeholders -Laying out the information architecture -Designing wireframes -Back end and front end development -Integrating third-part technologies and systems -Coaching and author training To close the presentation, Andrei and Chantal discussed their recent migration to AEM 6.1, lessons learned and what’s next for Concordia. Concordia Speakers: Andrei is the Lead Designer at Concordia with a broad experience in front and back end development, WCMS technologies and UX design. Chantal is the Information Architect for Concordia.ca, Concordia’s intranet presence and MyConcordia portal. Both Andre and Chantal have been with Concordia since the inception of the migration project to CQ 5.6 in 2012. INM Speakers: Nadine is INM's team leader for many large scale mandates and has proven experience in guiding multi-disciplinary teams through several successful website projects. Nadine was involved in Concordia's re-platforming project.

Program code examples (known also as worked examples) play a crucial role in learning how to program. Instructors use examples extensively to demonstrate the semantics of the programming language being taught and to highlight the fundamental coding patterns. Programming textbooks allocate considerable space to present and explain code examples. To make the process of studying code examples more interactive, CS education researchers developed a range of tools to engage students in the study of code examples. These tools include codecasts (codemotion,codecast,elicasts), interactive example explorers (WebEx, PCEX), and tutoring systems (DeepTutor). An important component in all types of worked examples is code explanations associated with specific code lines or code chunks of an example. The explanations connect examples with general programming knowledge explaining the role and function of code fragments or their behavior. In textbooks, these explanations are usually presented as comments in the code or as explanations on the margins. The example explorer tools allow students to examine these explanations interactively. Tutoring systems, which engage students in explaining the code, use these model explanations to check student responses and provide scaffolding. In all these cases, to make a worked example re-usable beyond its presentation in a lecture, the explanations have to be authored by instructors or domain experts i.e., produced and integrated into a specific system. As the experience of the last 10 years demonstrated, these explanations are hard to obtain. Those already collected are usually “locked” in a specific example-focused system and can’t be reused. The purpose of this working group is to support broader re-used of worked examples augmented with explanations. Our current plan is to develop а standard approach to represent explained examples. This approach will enable an example created for any of the existing systems to be explored in a standard format and imported into any other example-focused system. We plan to follow a successful experience of the PEML working group focused on re-using programming exercises.
