in diagnosing computer error
Values: Value the importance of responding
responding immediately to a problem
3. COMPUTER ERROR
An error is a term used to describe
any issue that arises unexpectedly that cause
a computer to not function properly.
Computers can encounter either software
errors or hardware errors.
Hardware Error
Software Error
4. HARDWARE ERRORS
are any defects with hardware inside
the computer or connected to the
computer. Typically, any hardware errors
caused by defects are resolved by replacing
the defective hardware.
5. COMMON
HARDWARE
ERRORS
• Blank monitors
• Hard drive is dead
• Error when booting
• Shutdown problems
• Freezing computer
• The mouse or keyboard has stopped working
• Computer doesn't power up
6. BLANK MONITORS
Symptoms:
When you open your PC, nothing shows up in
your monitor and the LED indicator of your
monitor is flashing in yellow color and the
system unit is turning on.
Possible Cause:
1. Connection problems with your monitor or screen;
either VGA cable or Power Cable.
2. Display adapter driver update issues
3. RAM Issues
4. Motherboard issues
5. Issues with recent system updates or installations
7. DISK READ ERROR
A disk read error occurred is a common error that we can
encounter. This error means Windows detects a hard disk
problem or there is something wrong with the process of
reading hard disk. This error appears while computer
boots up and blocks computer to boot into operating
system, directly preventing user out of system. It appears
with message "A disk read error occurred Press Ctrl + Alt
+ Del to restart" as picture below. When you press Ctrl +
Alt + Del to restart computer you still get same error
without being able to boot up Windows.
Symptoms:
Cause 1: Incorrect or invalid MBR configuration
The most common cause for this error is an incorrect
MBR configuration. This is usually caused by disk write
errors, virus attacks or power outages.
Cause 2: Misconfigured partition table
For the same reasons, the partition table may become
misconfigured. If that’s the case, it is possible to rebuild
the partition table from scratch to make sure system
loads correctly.
Cause 3: Faulty Hard Drive/ Solid State Drive
8. DISK BOOT FAILURE
The disk boot failure, or more specifically speaking, "DISK BOOT FAILURE - INSERT SYSTEM DISK
AND PRESS ENTER", is an error that means Windows couldn't load correctly. Indicated from the
error message, it asks you to insert a system disk. It means that the disk boot failure occurs
because BIOS is unable to find a bootable drive to start up the computer during the startup
process
The disk boot failure appears when there is no boot device found. Why can't the BIOS locate your
boot disk? There are three kinds of possibilities:
1. Incorrect Boot Order in BIOS: A device that doesn't have the OS ranks first in the boot
sequence
2. Damaged operating system: The operating system is corrupted and BOIS can't recognize it
3. Corrupted system disk: The system hard drive is damaged, unreadable, or unrecognizable
4. Improper new hard drive configuration: The new hard drive is configured improperly
The disk boot failure is an upsetting issue. If you couldn't find a way to fix the disk boot failure, it will
finally result in some other terrible problems like the black or blue screen of death, computer freezing
randomly, system crash, etc. Therefore, carry out the fixes as soon as possible to eliminate your
worries.
Causes of Windows Disk Boot Failure
9. SHUTDOWN
PROBLEM
Possible Cause:
1. Heat-related issue – Most computers today are designed to turn off automatically if any of its inner
components overheat. Dust building inside the system unit can cause the unit to overheat because airflow
was blocked.
2. Hardware-related issue- Any failing hardware component in your computer could cause your computer to
unexpectedly turn off without warning. If you have recently added any new hardware, remove it from the
computer to make sure it's not causing the problem.
3. Computer virus - Your computer may be infected with a virus or other malware that is designed to shut
down your computer upon certain conditions. If your computer seems to be turning off when executing a
certain program at specific times of the day, it could be infected.
4. Issue with the operating system- Corrupted Operating System
10. FREEZING COMPUTER
If you find your PC turning unresponsive at times and it freezes
suddenly, it’s time to get a thorough check of your system.
Initially, you will need to identify the actual cause behind
computer freeze issue to detect if it is software specific or
hardware related. Identifying the actual reason will help resolve
the problem quicker.
Let’s understand these categories in
detail.
Hang: Whenever a specific set of procedure is
performed on a PC, it hangs up and needs to
be restarted to recover.
Random Hang: When the system turns
unresponsive frequently at regular intervals of
time, and you will have to restart it to recover
hard drive data.
Generic Freeze: The system turns
unresponsive and automatically turns to
normal functional state without any
troubleshooting.
Single-app Freeze: When system freezes
abnormally while you attempt to start a game,
a particular program, or a heavy browsing
website.
Cause
1. Too Many Apps Running
2. Driver Issues
3. Operating System Issues
4. Excess Heating up
5. Hardware Misconfiguration
6. Insufficient RAM
7. BIOS Setting
8. Power Issues
9. External Devices
10. Hard Drive Malfunction
11. KEYBOARD AND MOUSE STOP WORKING
Faults involving hardware can be some of the most difficult to diagnose as
it could be a fault with the hardware itself or the software that controls it
1. Computer freezes –If your computer is freezing for some reason, it’s
likely going to affect the mouse and keyboard as well—whether or
not a USB flash drive is connected.
2. Hardware issues - If connected devices are in conflict, one of them
can cause the others to freeze or stop working. In this type of
situation, the newest hardware is usually the culprit
3. Connection problems - If the mouse or keyboard connection is loose,
the device won’t be getting all the power it can get. When a flash
drive is then connected, it takes even more power away, causing the
cursor movement or typing device to stop working. Make sure that
the USB or wireless mouse and keyboard are properly connected.
4. Driver issues - The problem can be related to the system’s USB Root
Hub driver or another hardware driver. If the mouse or keyboard
driver is outdated, an error like this can arise. Moreover, installing a
dedicated driver for certain hardware is usually better than using the
generic driver provided by Windows. You can also check the USB
port drivers to see if that’s where the problem is.
5. Driver conflicts - Aside from the potential causes outlined above, a
conflict between two drivers can also cause at least one of the
corresponding hardware devices to stop working when both are
connected.
6. System issues -Rarely, the mouse or keyboard freezing issue when a
USB drive is plugged in is caused by underlying system issues. A
simple scan with a system file scanner should fix this.
Cause
12. COMPUTER DOESN'T POWER UP
If you have a desktop computer that does not turn on
after pressing the power button, this might be the
possible cause;
1. Power cord not connected properly
2. Bad power cable
3. Faulty Power supply switch
4. Faulty Power button
5. Bad Motherboard
6. Loosely connected hardware
7. Other bad hardware components
13. SOFTWARE
ERRORS
are the most common types of errors on a
computer and are typically fixed with
software updates or patches that are designed to fix
errors in the code.
14. EXAMPLE OF
SOFTWARE ERRORS
• Access denied -.
• Device not ready -.
• File not found
• HTTP 404
• IO Error
• Low disk space
• Out of memory
• Runtime Error
15. This error occurs if the user doesn't have
privileges to a file, or if it has been locked
by some program or user.-
Access denied
16. Device not ready - this is an error that
is both hardware and software. This
occurs when software tries to access
hardware that is non-existent or not
ready.
17. File not found –
this error is triggered when
accessed/requested files are
either corrupted, non-existent,
mistyped, etc
18. LOW DISK SPACE
• This error occurs when the hard drive is
(nearly) full. To fix this, the user should close
some programs (to free swap file usage) and
delete some files (normally temporary files, or
other files after they have been backed up),
or get a bigger hard drive
19. OUT OF MEMORY
• This error occurs when the
system has run out of memory or
tries to load a file too large to
store in RAM. The fix is to close
some programs or install more
memory.
20. HTTP 404 - this is
a networking error
that is seen when
a non-existent
address is
requested
21. IO error - read and
write errors belong to
this general error
category
22. RUNTIME ERROR - These are errors that happen
during the time a program is running/executing
23. BLUE SCREEN OF DEATH
Blue Screen of Death - Windows operating
systems display a blue screen containing and
error message when the operating system
crashes. This fatal system error can be triggered
by faulty hardware, driver issues, power-supply
issues, kernel bugs, etc. Each trigger/cause for
the error is given a hexadecimal code as listed
below.
