This document provides an overview of solid waste management. It begins with definitions of solid waste and solid waste management. It then outlines the key aspects of solid waste management, including storage in dust bins or paper sacks, house-to-house or community bin collection, transport by trucks or trains, the 3R's of reduce, reuse and recycle, and final disposal through dumping, incineration or composting. The 3R's concepts of reduce, reuse and recycle are then each described in more detail.
4. Solid waste
Non liquid, non-soluble
materials ranging from
municipal garbage to
industrial wastes that
contain complex &
sometimes hazardous
substances

5. Cont.
• Solid waste means any garbage, refuse, sludge from a
wastewater treatment plant, water supply treatment plant, or
air pollution control facility and other discarded materials
including solid, liquid, semi-solid, or contained gaseous
material, resulting from industrial, commercial, mining and
agricultural operations.
5
7. Storage
• Galvanized steel dust bin.
- Paper sack
- Public bins
• For each solid waste use different container, or bins,
e.g for biodegredable, non biodegredable.
7
8. Collection
• House-to-House:
Waste collector visit each
individual house to collect garbage.
• Community bins:
User bring their garbage to
community bins that are placed at fixed points in a
neighborhood or locality.
8
11. Reduce
• To make something smaller or use less, resulting in a smaller
amount of waste.
• To reduce the use of resources, less use of resources will
produce less amount of waste.
11
12. Reuse
• Reuse is the action or practice of using something again or
more than once.
• Reuse materials and items so that they have longer life spans
and don`t get thrown away after the first use.
e.g we fill up a used marker.
12
13. Re-cycling
• Recycle to convert waste material into reusable material
• Landfills and full of items that could be recycled
• Recycling puts objects through a process that allows them to
be used again.
13
15. Dumping:
A land disposal site at which solid wastes are disposed in a
manner that doesn’t protect the environment.
-Area use for storage of waste.
