3. What is Waste ?
Anything which is no longer useful to us can be
called WASTE. This includes vegetable & fruit
peels, used paper, old toys etc……
4. Types Of Wastes
Waste materials can also be predominantly
classified into two types of waste :-
● Biodegradable Waste
● Non-Biodegradable Waste
5. Biodegradable Waste
● Waste that rots and gets mixed with the soil
and does NOT harm the environment is called
BIODEGRADABLE WASTE.
● EG- Fish scales, vegetable and fruit peels
animal dungs, human faeces etc….
7. Non-Biodegradable Waste
● Waste that does not rot and gets mixed with
the soil and can harm the environment is
called NON-BIODEGRADABLE WASTE.
● EG- Glass, metals, plastics etc…..
9. E-Waste
● Another type of waste is e-waste【electronic
waste】 that can neither be reused nor get
mixed with the soil and so it is difficult to get
rid of this waste. Therefore e-waste has
become an ENVIRONMENTAL HAZARD.
● EG- Old computers, television sets etc…..
11. Waste Disposal
● Waste materials or garbage needs to be
managed and removed in proper ways.
Otherwise it can cause damage to our natural
environment.
● EG- Throw non-biodegradable waste in blue
bins, biodegradable in green bins etc…..
13. Waste In Cities
● As more people live in cities use more
packaged products that are wrapped in plastic
bags. Therefore a lot of plastic waste is
produced in urban (cities) areas. Plastic is a
non-biodegradable product and harmful for the
environment.
15. Waste In Villages
● People in villages produce less amount of
waste than those living in cities. In rural
(villages) areas people lead simpler lives and
use lot of fresh products. They use
biodegradable waste to produce compost
which is used by farmers as manure.
17. Waste Management
● Waste can be dumped in landfills, converted
into compost or burnt. Another way to manage
waste is to reduce and reuse products rather
than throwing them away. The 3Rs- reduce,
reuse and recycle- are the best ways to
manage waste.
19. Reduce
● We can reduce the amount of waste produced
in many ways like buying less packaged
products, buy longer lasting goods, eat more
fresh fruits rather than packaged food, use
cloth or jute bags instead of plastic bags.
21. Reuse
● We can find out ways in which used products
can be reused rather than throwing away. We
can reuse glass and plastic bottles, jars and
containers to store different things at home.
We can use old clothes to make other things
like napkins and scarves.
23. Recycle
● We can recycle to make new products. We
can start by separating our waste into those
that can recycled and ones that cannot be
recycled. Products like boxes, clothes etc can
be recycled. The scrap dealers collect such
products and them take to factories where
they are recycled to make new things.
