Overview
This course will be team-taught across two semesters; with
semester one being run
by the School of Global Affairs and semester two by the African
Leadership Centre.
ALC students are expected to attend both terms as all sessions
are compulsory.
Semester 1 sessions require coursework and will be assesd for
SGA students BUT
will not be assesed for ALC Students. However attendence and
participation will be
recorded and can impact on your overall grade.
In Semester 2 you will be required to present your dissertation
proposal to fellow
students and faculty.

Writing the Dissertation
Aims of a Dissertation
The overall aims of postgraduate dissertations are to:
• Provide students with an opportunity to conduct a piece of
research on a topic
related to their programme of studies
• Further students’ knowledge of a relevant body of literature,
and develop powers
of critical reasoning
• Enable students to demonstrate their understanding of
different theoretical
perspectives and to assess critically the relevance of their
application to a relevant
problem
• Develop students’ ability to apply critically different
analytical techniques and
methods that are relevant to their dissertation topic
• Provide the opportunity to demonstrate the capacity for
independent, self-
managed learning.
• In some cases, allow students to seek new research findings
which add to the
existing body of knowledge on a particular subject area. Thus,
some –not all-
dissertations involve primary data collection although other
dissertations review
or reinterpret material already available in the public domain
(i.e. academic
literature, policy papers, research and policy reports, and
publicly available data)
• Develop a range of research skills, including the development
of a study
hypothesis, an appreciation of the research methodology and
analytical
techniques to be utilised, the undertaking of a specific research
study, the
synthesis and evaluation of findings, and a clear statement of
conclusions
• Develop students’ writing, presentation and bibliographic
skills, which involves
skills in planning and management of a long document
Objectives
On completing the dissertation, students should be better
equipped to:
• Conduct literature reviews and secondary research using a
range of bibliographic
techniques and sources, including those available through the
world-wide web
• Analyse and synthesise relevant concepts and methods, and
apply these to a
relevant problem
• Where appropriate and feasible, conduct small-scale primary
research activities,
as discussed with supervisors and on an individual basis
• Manage their own work and learning processes in relation to a
research project
that can be completed over the summer months
• Produce a dissertation conforming to the conventions of
academic writing.

Word Limit
The dissertation should be 14,000 words (you will also submit
1000 word proposal,
making 15,000 words in total)
The word count does not include:
• Cover Sheet
• Title
• Acknowledgmenets
• Abstract
• Footnoted references
• The bibliography
• Any text that forms part of any graphs or illustrations
On word count regulations:
As per ALC referencing house style:
• Footnoted text is included in the word count (footnoted text
provides additional
information that is peripheral to the main argument)
• Footnoted references are not included in the word count
(footnoted references
provide references to the sources used)
Penalties for exceeding word limits
• There is a five per cent tolerance - no penalty is incurred for
up to five per cent
over the word limit.
• Thereafter, 2 marks will normally be deducted for every five
per cent, until fifty
per cent is reached.
• After fifty per cent, 3 marks will normally be deducted for
each additional five per
cent.
Extensions
There are no last minute extensions on dissertations. The
submission of the dissertation
marks the completion of your degree, and we need the time
following the deadline in
order to mark, second mark, review and process your grades in
time for the Exam Board
in the Autumn and your graduation. As with coursework
assessment, the Mitigating
Circumstances mechanism also applies to dissertations. Any
student who considers their
dissertation delayed due to ‘unforeseen’ and ‘unpreventable’
circumstances should
complete the online application found in the Student handbook.
All work to be considered
under Mitigating Circumstances should be submitted as soon as
is practicable but note
that any work submitted after the end of September 2019 may
be too late to be marked
and considered in pass time for the December graduation in
2019.
Working with your Supervisor
Working with a supervisor is an important element of the
dissertation process.
Supervision is provided under the general principle that the
dissertation must be your
own work. A dissertation is worth 60 credits, or 600 student
learning hours. The bulk of
this work will be independent study. Guidance and discussion
during the supervisory

process enables you to develop and present your study of an
approved topic effectively
and within the norms of a dissertation genre.
Students are allowed to meet with supervisors up to five times
(these five meetings must
all have occurred before 5th July, as per timelines above). It is
strongly recommended
that you meet for the allocated five times. It is important that
students take advantage of
their supervisors advice as much as possible. If student and
supervisor are unable to meet
five times face-to-face, then email or Skype are acceptable
alternatives. Do make sure that
you and your supervisor are aware of each other’s absences.
The Student’s Role
• Discussing with your supervisor the type of guidance and
comment that you find
helpful
• Taking the initiative in arranging consultations, raising
questions, problems or
difficulties encountered
• Make sure prospective issues on Ethical Approval are
addressed very early into
the project
• Delivering type-written drafts several days before a discussion
• Keeping appointments (or informing your supervisor where
this is not possible).
• Maintaining a schedule of work as agreed with your supervisor
• Beginning the process of Research Ethics Clearance if
applicable, i.e., when
collecting primary data is part of your project
• Submitting the completed dissertation, correctly bound as well
as on KEATS, on
the deadline.
Student responsibilities:
You must ensure that dissertation supervisors are kept fully
informed on progress and
difficulties, and are approached with prepared questions at
supervisory meetings. You
should aim to submit chapter or section drafts in advance of
meetings in sufficient time
to allow for comment and discussion before proceeding to the
next stage. The onus is on
you to make sure that you arrange meetings with your
supervisor, or that you attend at
the times that are arranged by your supervisor in consultation
with you: you will not be
‘chased’ by supervisors.
Supervisors cannot judge how your work is going if you just
hand over a sub-section that
you have written up. One of the most important elements of
planning the dissertation is
preparing a draft of your contents so that it is quite clear what
follows on from what. You
should also maintain a running bibliography that you submit
with each piece of draft you
ask your supervisor to read. Supervisors are not to be expected
to proof read or to correct
spelling/grammar. Students are advised to buy-in or otherwise
arrange such services if
needed.
To a large extent, then, the dissertation has to be a self-managed
process. Your role is to
organise the research programme as a whole, take advice from
your supervisor and take
the initiative in raising problems/difficulties. The supervisor’s
role is to give advice and
help about the nature and standard of the work, and direct you
to useful literature and
appropriate methodology. But remember, the ultimate
responsibility remains yours. Do
NOT expect your supervisor to read drafts and re-drafts of
every piece of your work, and
above all, do NOT ask your supervisor in the latter stages
whether you will be successful,

not least because they cannot tell you, or do not know.
The Supervisor’s Role:
• Giving guidance about the nature of the research and
dissertation
• Giving guidance on the standard of work expected, and on
how to plan and
manage your time and the programme of research involved
• Giving guidance on research techniques and on necessary
reading/bodies of
literature
• Overseeing the writing of an outline and the selection of a
title
• Giving guidance on the planning of empirical work
• Agreeing on completion dates for successive stages of the
work, requesting draft
writings as appropriate and returning written material with
constructive
criticism on the broad shape and structure of the work (but not
on its detailed
content)
• Providing advice and guidance to help improve the quality of
the work
• In sum, your supervisor will guide you towards the production
of your
dissertation by discussing parts of the process, especially in the
initial stages. Your
supervisor may advise on relevant areas of literature, help you
to develop your
thoughts on your topic, give guidance on the development of
chapters and on the
conventions of dissertation writing. Your supervisor will not act
as a proof-reader
of your work, nor do literature searches for you. They cannot be
asked to read the
whole of the final draft submission.
Difficulties or Problems
Your supervisor will ensure that you are made aware when
progress on the dissertation
is below the standard expected and that you are given guidance
as to how the problem
should be rectified. If you feel that the dissertation is not
proceeding satisfactorily and are
unable to resolve the difficulty with your supervisor, you should
seek advice by writing
to the Programme Director Professor Abiodun Alao. If the
Programme Director is your
dissertation supervisor, the letter should go to Dr Eka Ikpe.
Supervisors have been allocated based on availability and
expertise. This means that not
all of you may get your first choice. All members of staff are
capable of supervising you
within their broad disciplinary expertise, even if the subject
matter might differ a little.
Hence, there is no reason to change supervisors unless you are
particularly unhappy with
the arrangement for specific reasons. If so, please discuss this
with the Programme
Director Professor Abiodun Alao.
By the end of supervision in June, you should at least have 1) a
defined topic and
research question(s)/hypothesis, 2) a chapter breakdown of the
whole dissertation, 3) a
work plan for the coming months, 4) an approach/methodology.
Ideally, you should also
have received feedback on your outline.
Planning your Work
When you are planning your schedule, please remember that
your own time and

application is only one of the determining factors. You need to
take into account your
supervisor’s time as well as your own when you are estimating
overall time needed. Data
collection – including the selection of literature and publicly
available data- always takes
longer than you expect, as does, for example, the analysing and
writing up of chapters,
and even the completion of your reference list. Be on the safe
side and double your first
estimate.
Organising your work is of key importance. You should build
up separate reference files
of material as the study develops including notes of all
documents read, and photocopies
or computer files of particularly useful papers or diagrams, and
notes of all meetings and
discussions. Ensure that all references are complete, using the
styles of Harvard or
Chicago Systems that are in accordance with the ALC House
Style – in other words, use
footnoting instead of in-text citation. Allow time for the
development of ideas and
arguments through revision and redrafting and full discussions
of each section of study.
Preparing summaries of each section as part of the drafts can
help you achieve this.
Remember to make back-up copies of work held on hard or
portable media. You should
never rely on only portable memory storage. This can be
unreliable and failure to make
back-up copies may result in loss of work. There is no excuse
for not backing-up your files.
Note that any such ‘disasters’ of lost work will not justify late
submission.
Make sure you leave plenty of time to proofread work, format
the layout, which should be
done on hardcopies instead of on-screen, and chase-up any
remaining references and
print the final copies; these invariably take much longer than
you expect. The use of
automated referencing is recommended.

A student who either fails to submit material for assessment or
submits after the deadline
and has not made a request for an extension under Regulations
18.1 or 18.4 above, or who
has not satisfied the Chair of the Assessment Sub Board that
their mitigating circumstances
offer valid reasons for submitting late work, will have an
automatic penalty applied. Work
submitted within 24 hours of the deadline will be marked but
the mark awarded will
be no greater than the pass mark. Work submitted after the 24
hour deadline will
receive a mark of zero; such a student may, at the discretion of
the relevant Assessment
Sub Board, be permitted to attempt the assessment again if the
regulations for the
programme permit such reassessment.
The Writing Process
A golden rule is to write down as much as you can from as early
on as you can – and your
task will become easier. There are several good reasons for this
advice. For some people,
actually getting thoughts down on paper presents one of the
biggest stumbling blocks. If
you feel this way, take comfort that this is a common feeling.
However, this must be
overcome early in the process. Quite often, it is difficult to spot
the flaws in your reasoning
until it is set out on paper, so you are well advised to write up
bits and pieces in draft as
early as possible. Early sessions with your supervisor should be
followed by a period
where you get down on paper and develop ideas that have been
mentioned. Another
reason for writing early on is that your supervisor will want to
see your reasoning is
committed to paper.

Try and have achievable goals within the wider project –commit
to writing sections of the
overall dissertation. A word of caution though: you must read
them all again and make
sure there is a central linear narrative that runs through your
document, once you have
finished all ‘chapters’. Allow at least two weeks for this
essential final edit, as returning to
sections you have written earlier allows you to see mistakes that
pass you by at the time:
you can greatly improve your mark by editing your work
properly.
The Dissertation Proposal
With a little tinkering, your Dissertation Proposal can double as
the introduction to your
dissertation. This serves to map out how you are going to
proceed with this project. For
your supervisor, it is a check that the idea is workable before
you go ahead with it all. Your
supervisor will give you verbal feedback on the proposal within
a month of your handing
it in.
The 3 page proposal (1000 words limit) has 5 important
elements:
• Statement of main research topic and why it’s worth doing
• Possible research questions and/or case studies you might
want to focus on. (These
can be ideas you will further define in early May.)
• Literature overview or how your project relates to the
literature out there and
where it’s going to make a unique contribution.
• Personal timetable- the plan of how you will research,
write, and edit your work.
Please factor in when you will meet with your supervisor, take
any trips for interviews or
special libraries, and by what dates you will complete different
sections
• Bibliography- of what you’ve done so far and what you
might still want to cover
(NOTE, this bibliography is NOT included in your word count).

Although it may be tempting to write about something you have
already begun to explore

in one of your modules, be careful not to self-plagiarise. This is
when you take chunks
of writing from another paper and use it in your dissertation.
You can use the ideas
and quotes and explore the same themes, just make sure it is a
fresh piece of writing.
Collecting Primary Data
Primary data collection includes work in archives, carrying out
interviews,
surveys, life histories, or participant observation. Collecting
primary data for your
dissertation is not necessary, as the emphasis can be on desk
research (i.e., case
studies based on existing research/literature, analysis of
existing data sets, policy
documents, research and policy reports). However, you can also
complement such
sources with some primary research. If you plan to travel abroad
for primary
research you need to discuss this carefully with your supervisor,
as such research
involves specific risks with regard to data collection, and time
constrictions –your
supervisor will not be available to support your writing process
in the summer
months for example.

1. Introduction
1.1 This Core Code sets out the policy of King’s College
London on good practice in all matters
concerning postgraduate taught dissertations. A copy of the
Core Code will be made
available to all postgraduate students and supervisors on an
annual basis1. It will be reviewed
annually by the College Postgraduate Taught Sub-committee, on
behalf of the College
Education Committee2.
1.2 The Core Code should be read in conjunction with the
guidelines set out in the appropriate
Faculty (Institute/School) and Departmental3 or dissertation

programmes published under
the authority of the Academic Board of the College and
programme specifications.
1.3 The term ‘research’ in the Core Code has been interpreted in
its broadest sense and may
encompass a range of data-collection methods. The different
types of dissertation adopted
by the College and covered in this Code can be found in
Appendix 1.
1.4 Supervision of postgraduate taught students is influenced by
many factors including the
individuals involved, the type of work, the discipline, the size
of the department and the
environment in which students and supervisors work. Some
variation across an institution
as large and complex as the College is therefore inevitable.
Faculty (Institute/School)
practice may, therefore strengthen and build upon the Core
Code, which should be seen as
laying down the minimum standards expected.
2. Purpose of the Core Code
2.1 The purpose of this Core Code is to provide a framework for
the effective management and
implementation of good practice in all matters relating to
postgraduate taught research
activities at King’s College London.
2.2 It aims to ensure that all students are effectively supported
and supervised so that:
study is made
available/agreed with the student
developed.
the timeframe
laid down by the

2.3 It should be noted that it is the student’s responsibility to
ensure that their work is submitted
on time and of a satisfactory standard to achieve at least a pass.
2.4 The roles and responsibilities of those involved in
postgraduate taught research activities
are provided in Appendix 3.

2.5 The Core Code sets out the minimum threshold
expectations; Faculties (Institutes/School)
may seek approval from the Quality and Academic Support
(QAS) office to supplement and
build upon the Core Code.
3. The format of a master’s research dissertation
3.1 The research project is a core requirement for a taught
Master’s degree6 at King’s and is
the key element distinguishing the Master’s degree from a
professional certificate or
postgraduate diploma programme.
3.2 The structure of a taught master’s programme in the College
varies and may differ from the
traditional format that it is taken over 1 calendar year Full Time
or 2 years Part Time7.
3.3 This normally comprises a workload over 45-46 weeks plus
holidays, to average 40 hours
per week. This equates to a total of 180 credits at ‘M’ level, of
which the taught master’s
research dissertation forms a significant component, usually 60
credits (as described in
Appendix 1).
3.4 Details of the structure and format of the taught Master’s
research project should be
documented in a dissertation handbook.
3.5 Word count limits would normally include footnotes and
endnotes. It does not include
bibliography, references, or appendices unless otherwise
specified in student handbooks.
4. Supervision
4.1 Normally each student pursuing a dissertation will be
allocated a research supervisor. Some
programmes utilise a research practice project model; students
on these programmes will
have their work on this project overseen by a module convenor8
rather than a supervisor
(further details can be found in Appendix 3).
4.2 Supervisors and module convenors should consult the
College Core Code (and where
appropriate their Faculty (Institute/School) for guidance on
policy, regulation and good
practice relating to the supervision of students.
4.3 Supervisors and module convenors should hold regular9
supervision meetings with their
students, on an individual or a collective basis dependent upon
the dissertation model
(Appendix 1), and where deemed necessary should keep a
record of those meetings.
Supervisors may require students to provide this formal record.
4.4 For programmes delivered online similar arrangements will
need to be made electronically.
4.5 When a student’s supervisor is unable to perform their
required supervisory duties for
more than one month, s/he should inform the student and
appropriate authority within the
Faculty (Institute/School) and make appropriate arrangements
for cover. The Head of
Department/Division should ensure that appropriate cover is
provided.

4.6 Heads of Department or a delegated named representative
are responsible for making
appropriate arrangements in the case of students changing or
wishing to change, their
supervisor, where it is deemed necessary.
4.7 Heads of Department or a delegated named representative
are responsible for ensuring
that students are aware of their responsibilities in relation to the
Health and Safety at Work
Act, occupational health clearance, CRB checks and visa
requirements where appropriate.
4.8 Students are responsible for the submission of their
dissertation and are permitted to
submit their work in the absence of approval from the
supervisor. Programmes that require
dissertations to be are ‘signed-off’ by the supervisor must
provide details of this process in
the module handbook.
4.9 It is the student’s responsibility to make sure the research
dissertation is submitted on time
(Appendix 3)
5. Ethical approval and statutory requirements
5.1 Supervisors and module convenors should notify students of
their obligation to obtain
ethical approval. Ethical approval is required for all research
that involves human
participants. This is sometimes applicable to the use of data
derived from humans. Studies,
requiring ethical review, must not begin without full approval.
Students should be aware that
this is a mandatory requirement of the College and that
conducting research without such
approval constitutes misconduct.
5.2 Students may sometimes require ethical approval for the re-
use of secondary data. This is
appropriate if the data is sensitive, or identifies individuals.
Some research work can be
socially or environmentally sensitive. This may also require
approval. The College web-pages
provide more information about further analysis of pre-existing
data.

5.3 Some research studies are subject to external ethical review.
This is due to legal or other
governance requirements. Such studies do not usually require
approval from the College.
For example, the NHS has its own research ethics committees
(NHS RECs). In such cases
supervisors have responsibility for ensuring that students have
ethical approval and that
other statutory requirements such as for GM work and animal
work are in place.
5.4 Research which does not fall under the remit of the NHS
should be submitted to one of the
review bodies accountable to the College Research Ethics
Committee (where the project
involves human participation in some form, or in certain cases
use of data derived from
humans).

6. Extensions
6.1 Overview
6.1.1 An extension is when a student’s submission is extended
beyond the original deadline as set
out by the academic regulations. The following provides details
of the requirements and

circumstances for seeking extensions of postgraduate taught
research dissertation
submission deadlines and advice when considering such
requests.
6.1.2 Any request for an extension to a dissertation submission
deadline must be made as soon
as the student is aware that they will be unable to meet the
original published deadline due
to acceptable circumstances.
6.2 Applications for extension requests for submission
deadlines must be approved at
Programme/Departmental level. In order for an extension to a
dissertation submission
deadline to be approved, a Mitigating Circumstances Form10
must be submitted. Details for
applying for an extension can be found at:

If at all possible the student should continue to work towards
the original published
deadline until the outcome of the extension request is known.
6.3 It is expected that the Programme/Department will reach a
decision on the student’s
request as soon as is reasonably possible.
6.4 Supervisors and/or the programme team should encourage
students to discuss difficulties
in meeting the deadline at the earliest opportunity. It is
important that students on distance-
learning programmes are aware of the regulations governing
extensions and have easy
access to the appropriate forms.
6.5 A request close to the original published deadline may not
be considered until after the
deadline has passed. In that situation the student should submit
their work as soon as is
reasonably possible after the deadline, even if they have not
been notified of the outcome
of their extension request.
The student should be aware that in such instances, if their
reasons for requesting an
extension are deemed unacceptable, their work will receive a
mark dependent on the time
that has passed since the original submission date.
6.6 Absences for relevant training or time spent in industry
should not lead to an extension or
change to the submission date.
6.7 Illness
6.7.1 If a student experiences ongoing medical/health problems
throughout their studies but
decides they do not wish to interrupt their studies, information
must be kept on record in
case an extension to their dissertation submission deadline is
required nearer the time.
6.7.2 Short periods of absence through illness during the
research period should be brought to
the attention of the supervisor by the student and recorded by
the programme
team/supervisor and/or brought directly to the attention of the
Chair of the Assessment
Sub-board11 as this may eventually have an impact on a
student’s dissertation submission
deadline, and without a record of such periods it will be
difficult to grant an extension.
6.7.3 In all cases of medical/health problems medical
certificates/doctors notes/counsellors
reports must be provided by the student, noted by the research
supervisor/programme
team and kept on the student file for future reference if and
when required by the Chair of

the Assessment Sub-board. Without supporting documentation,
an extension may not be
granted.
6.7.4 Students learning by distance should be permitted to
provide original medical
documents/certificates and other supporting evidence
electronically
6.7.5 If an accident/unexplained illness that affects a student
during or in the lead up to the
submission of the dissertation the student must submit a
mitigating circumstances form12.
The form can be submitted no later than 7 calendar days after
the date of a missed deadline.
6.7.6 In cases of illness or injury that involve absences of more
than two weeks, the student should
inform the supervisor and/or programme team/ department and
medical certificates
should be requested. Where a student is or is expected to be
absent for more than two
months, whether consequently or cumulatively then the
appropriate administrative unit
should be informed, and arrangements put in place to interrupt
the programme of study
where appropriate.
6.8 Other
6.8.1 For maternity leave, up to nine month’s interruption can
be approved automatically and the
date of research dissertation submission extended. Students can
also apply for up to three
further months, and again the date of submission would be
extended. For paternity leave,
students can take up to 10 days automatically (which will not
affect the date of submission);
students may also take up to 13 weeks within 12 months of birth
or whatever is permitted by
government legislation. If the additional time is taken, the date
of submission will be extended
by the appropriate period.
6.8.2 Where a student has experienced difficulties with their
supervisor it is the responsibility of
the Head of Department/Division or designated representative to
deal with/rectify this as
quickly as possible. Therefore such circumstances, unless in
extreme cases, should not be
the sole grounds for seeking an extension.
7. Marking and formative feedback to students
7.1 All dissertations are to be double marked according to the
College’s Marking Framework
(Model 2). External examiners shall have sight of both markers
feedback and marks, along
with a note of how the final mark has been agreed.
7.2 The marking can be independent of the supervisor or
supervisor-led but there should be a
standardized department approach to the marking.
7.3 All students should be provided with one opportunity for
receiving formative feedback
prior to the final submission of the dissertation. This formative
feedback can either be
feedback of one chapter or feedback of numerous chapters. The
Department should
agree what approach to be taken.

8.1 All Programmes are expected to have procedures in place to
collect feedback from
students regarding the dissertation experience and support
infrastructure as a whole even
if comprised of more than one module.
8.2 The College participates in the national Postgraduate Taught
Experience Survey (PTES)
which gives postgraduate taught students the particular
opportunity to feedback their
dissertation experience13.
8.3 It is acknowledged that some students may not have started
on their dissertations by the
time PTES closes and that its value as a conduit for feedback in
these cases may be limited.
8.4 However, where possible it is expected within this code of
practice that note is made and
action taken if necessary by programme/department/ Faculty
(Institutes/School) in
response to feedback from students about their research
experience.
9. Complaints and appeals
9.1 Students should refer to the Student complaints procedures
(B6 of the Regulations concerning
students) (see College Governance Zone) if they are dissatisfied
with any aspect of their

9.2 Students whose registration is terminated for failure to make
sufficient academic progress

Framework
Rationale
It is a College commitment that as a research-intensive
university the development of an
understanding of research methodology, design and practice
should lie at the core of all masters’
programmes. In order to instigate greater clarity whilst ensuring
probity and rigour across the
College and in order to ensure that the research process is
embedded within programmes in a fair
and transparent manner the following types of dissertation
should be adopted. Programmes will
select the most appropriate type for their programmes with the
overall aim of enabling students to
demonstrate specialised understanding and independent critical
evaluation.
In accordance with the QAA Masters Characteristics all Masters
programmes must include an
element of research as a core component of the programme as
described by the following
models15.
Programmes included in the framework
Master of Science (MSc); Master of Arts (MA); Master Public
Health (MPH); Master Teaching and
Learning (MTL); Master of Laws (LLM); Master Business
Administration (MBA); Master Clinical
Dentistry (MClinDent) and Master Music (MMus)
Programmes must provide students with details of the specific
dissertation(s) models that they
intend to apply.

Model 1 - Original/empirical research dissertation
This model applies to those research projects undertaken in a
laboratory as well as in clinical
settings or elsewhere in the field and involves the collection and
analysis of original data. This model
also applies to the theoretical analysis of a mathematical
problem involving original mathematical
investigations, computer experiments such as particle
phenomenology and or atomistic simulation.
Ethical approval may be required for certain topics.
Credit value: 60. Max word limit: normally 15, 000
Model 2 - Retrospective/secondary data research dissertation
This model applies to those research projects that make use of
publically available electronic
datasets or an existing dataset from previously undertaken local
research. This model may also
include the collection and analysis of retrospective clinical
material or the theoretical analysis of a
mathematical problem following the collection and analysis of
data applied to existing mathematical
models that are relevant for the problem itself. Ethical approval
may be required for certain topics.

Model 3 - Practice/performance evaluation research dissertation
This model applies to the analysis of practice and includes
clinical audit and policy analysis as well
as the critical appraisal of service development or healthcare
provision. This model can also apply
to the evaluation of the performance of laboratory equipment or
comparison of difference
analytical techniques.
Credit value: 60. Max word limit: normally 15, 000
Model 4 - Composition-based research dissertation
This model is only applicable in fields such as music and digital
humanities and the main outcome of
the research is presented in a practical format. For music, this
may take the form of a composition
and/or performance material. For digital humanities, the project
may be comprised of 'software’
(normally conceived as a prototype or model) that expresses a
significant part of the intellectual
work, (e.g. a database design that models a real-world
phenomenon that is being investigated).
In either case the candidate should submit in addition a textual
component that establishes the
research questions that govern the submission as a whole.
Credit value: 60. Max word limit: normally 7, 500
(textual element)
Model 5 - Information/library-based research dissertation
This model applies to those research projects that are library-
based and will involve the systematic
review and/or meta-analysis of a specific topic. This model may
also include the analysis of legal
and/or philosophical sources demonstrating advanced skills in
legal and/or philosophical analysis
or a systematic review using information technology of the state
of the art in theoretical physics or
mathematics. A candidate may be required to include text that
describes the method used for the
evaluation and/or analysis of the knowledge base.

Model 6 - Artefact construction and analysis dissertation
This model applies to fields such as Informatics, where an
artefact is constructed with a view to
answering a particular research question. The artefact can take a
variety of forms, such as one or
more algorithms; a formal mathematical model; representation
formalisms to encode data,
information or knowledge; software applications; a robot with
control software; a design or; a
theoretical model of framework; etc. A candidate may be
required to provide a demonstration of
the artefact and material related to the artefact, such as source
code, installation instructions, and
user evaluations.

Model 7 – Professional/practice dissertation
This model applies to those research projects, which aim at
furthering the professional
development of students by offering a practice project. This
model will enable the application of
research to professional situations, and would require the
candidate to use a range of techniques
and research methods applicable to professional activities. The
practice-based research project
can take different forms, such as the submission of a framework
for documentation for
clients/service users, or the critical evaluation of a practice-
oriented case study.

Model 8 - Portfolio research dissertation of applied research
learning and skills (King’s Online)
This model applies to the development and demonstration of
knowledge and skills in research
design, analysis and reporting, and primarily targeting those
undertaking a King’s Online Managed
Programme. This model will include modules to provide a set of
core research- related knowledge
and skills, that combine into a portfolio of applied learning. The
portfolio-based research project
may include the development of an application for human
research ethics approval; critical
appraisal of empirical literature; the development of a research
methodology to examine research
objectives and hypotheses; and the analysis of qualitative or
quantitative data to meet research
objectives or test a null hypothesis. Students may also be able
to continue a single research topic
across the four modules to build a portfolio.

Model 9 – Blended learning dissertation
This model applies to the development and demonstration of
discipline specific knowledge and skills
in research design, analysis and reporting. A candidate may take
up to two online modules that
describes research methodology and analytical tools used for
the evaluation and/or analysis of the
knowledge base. The candidate will study using a mixture of
online and campus-based modules
linked to critical research methodology and practice.

Model 10 - Online Professional or Practice Masters Degrees
This model applies to professional/practice oriented online
programmes which integrate core
research skills within taught modules. This is done in order to
foster the ability to apply research to
professional situations, both practical and theoretical, as well as
the ability to use a range of
techniques and research methods applicable to professional
activities. A richer suite of taught
modules will be developed, resulting in demonstrated
knowledge and skills that will be assessed and
evidenced in both formative and summative assessments. A
separate research methods online
resource will normally be developed as a non-credit bearing
element of the programme to support
students.

  • 6. 3 Overview This course will be team-taught across two semesters; with semester one being run by the School of Global Affairs and semester two by the African Leadership Centre. ALC students are expected to attend both terms as all sessions are compulsory. Semester 1 sessions require coursework and will be assesd for SGA students BUT will not be assesed for ALC Students. However attendence and participation will be recorded and can impact on your overall grade. In Semester 2 you will be required to present your dissertation proposal to fellow students and faculty.

  • 17. http://www.sed.manchester.ac.uk/idpm/staff/documents/DH_GD NPaper.pdf 8 Writing the Dissertation Aims of a Dissertation The overall aims of postgraduate dissertations are to: • Provide students with an opportunity to conduct a piece of research on a topic related to their programme of studies • Further students’ knowledge of a relevant body of literature, and develop powers of critical reasoning • Enable students to demonstrate their understanding of different theoretical perspectives and to assess critically the relevance of their application to a relevant problem • Develop students’ ability to apply critically different analytical techniques and methods that are relevant to their dissertation topic
  • 18. • Provide the opportunity to demonstrate the capacity for independent, self- managed learning. • In some cases, allow students to seek new research findings which add to the existing body of knowledge on a particular subject area. Thus, some –not all- dissertations involve primary data collection although other dissertations review or reinterpret material already available in the public domain (i.e. academic literature, policy papers, research and policy reports, and publicly available data) • Develop a range of research skills, including the development of a study hypothesis, an appreciation of the research methodology and analytical techniques to be utilised, the undertaking of a specific research study, the synthesis and evaluation of findings, and a clear statement of conclusions • Develop students’ writing, presentation and bibliographic skills, which involves skills in planning and management of a long document Objectives On completing the dissertation, students should be better equipped to: • Conduct literature reviews and secondary research using a
  • 19. range of bibliographic techniques and sources, including those available through the world-wide web • Analyse and synthesise relevant concepts and methods, and apply these to a relevant problem • Where appropriate and feasible, conduct small-scale primary research activities, as discussed with supervisors and on an individual basis • Manage their own work and learning processes in relation to a research project that can be completed over the summer months • Produce a dissertation conforming to the conventions of academic writing. 9 Word Limit The dissertation should be 14,000 words (you will also submit 1000 word proposal, making 15,000 words in total) The word count does not include: • Cover Sheet • Title • Acknowledgmenets
  • 20. • Abstract • Footnoted references • The bibliography • Any text that forms part of any graphs or illustrations On word count regulations: As per ALC referencing house style: • Footnoted text is included in the word count (footnoted text provides additional information that is peripheral to the main argument) • Footnoted references are not included in the word count (footnoted references provide references to the sources used) Penalties for exceeding word limits • There is a five per cent tolerance - no penalty is incurred for up to five per cent over the word limit. • Thereafter, 2 marks will normally be deducted for every five per cent, until fifty per cent is reached. • After fifty per cent, 3 marks will normally be deducted for each additional five per cent.
  • 21. Extensions There are no last minute extensions on dissertations. The submission of the dissertation marks the completion of your degree, and we need the time following the deadline in order to mark, second mark, review and process your grades in time for the Exam Board in the Autumn and your graduation. As with coursework assessment, the Mitigating Circumstances mechanism also applies to dissertations. Any student who considers their dissertation delayed due to ‘unforeseen’ and ‘unpreventable’ circumstances should complete the online application found in the Student handbook. All work to be considered under Mitigating Circumstances should be submitted as soon as is practicable but note that any work submitted after the end of September 2019 may be too late to be marked and considered in pass time for the December graduation in 2019. Working with your Supervisor Working with a supervisor is an important element of the dissertation process. Supervision is provided under the general principle that the dissertation must be your own work. A dissertation is worth 60 credits, or 600 student learning hours. The bulk of this work will be independent study. Guidance and discussion during the supervisory
  • 22. 10 process enables you to develop and present your study of an approved topic effectively and within the norms of a dissertation genre. Students are allowed to meet with supervisors up to five times (these five meetings must all have occurred before 5th July, as per timelines above). It is strongly recommended that you meet for the allocated five times. It is important that students take advantage of their supervisors advice as much as possible. If student and supervisor are unable to meet five times face-to-face, then email or Skype are acceptable alternatives. Do make sure that you and your supervisor are aware of each other’s absences. The Student’s Role • Discussing with your supervisor the type of guidance and comment that you find helpful • Taking the initiative in arranging consultations, raising questions, problems or difficulties encountered • Make sure prospective issues on Ethical Approval are addressed very early into the project • Delivering type-written drafts several days before a discussion
  • 23. • Keeping appointments (or informing your supervisor where this is not possible). • Maintaining a schedule of work as agreed with your supervisor • Beginning the process of Research Ethics Clearance if applicable, i.e., when collecting primary data is part of your project • Submitting the completed dissertation, correctly bound as well as on KEATS, on the deadline. Student responsibilities: You must ensure that dissertation supervisors are kept fully informed on progress and difficulties, and are approached with prepared questions at supervisory meetings. You should aim to submit chapter or section drafts in advance of meetings in sufficient time to allow for comment and discussion before proceeding to the next stage. The onus is on you to make sure that you arrange meetings with your supervisor, or that you attend at the times that are arranged by your supervisor in consultation with you: you will not be ‘chased’ by supervisors. Supervisors cannot judge how your work is going if you just hand over a sub-section that you have written up. One of the most important elements of planning the dissertation is preparing a draft of your contents so that it is quite clear what follows on from what. You should also maintain a running bibliography that you submit
  • 24. with each piece of draft you ask your supervisor to read. Supervisors are not to be expected to proof read or to correct spelling/grammar. Students are advised to buy-in or otherwise arrange such services if needed. To a large extent, then, the dissertation has to be a self-managed process. Your role is to organise the research programme as a whole, take advice from your supervisor and take the initiative in raising problems/difficulties. The supervisor’s role is to give advice and help about the nature and standard of the work, and direct you to useful literature and appropriate methodology. But remember, the ultimate responsibility remains yours. Do NOT expect your supervisor to read drafts and re-drafts of every piece of your work, and above all, do NOT ask your supervisor in the latter stages whether you will be successful, 11 not least because they cannot tell you, or do not know. The Supervisor’s Role: • Giving guidance about the nature of the research and dissertation • Giving guidance on the standard of work expected, and on
  • 25. how to plan and manage your time and the programme of research involved • Giving guidance on research techniques and on necessary reading/bodies of literature • Overseeing the writing of an outline and the selection of a title • Giving guidance on the planning of empirical work • Agreeing on completion dates for successive stages of the work, requesting draft writings as appropriate and returning written material with constructive criticism on the broad shape and structure of the work (but not on its detailed content) • Providing advice and guidance to help improve the quality of the work • In sum, your supervisor will guide you towards the production of your dissertation by discussing parts of the process, especially in the initial stages. Your supervisor may advise on relevant areas of literature, help you to develop your thoughts on your topic, give guidance on the development of chapters and on the conventions of dissertation writing. Your supervisor will not act as a proof-reader of your work, nor do literature searches for you. They cannot be asked to read the whole of the final draft submission.

Difficulties or Problems Your supervisor will ensure that you are made aware when progress on the dissertation is below the standard expected and that you are given guidance as to how the problem should be rectified. If you feel that the dissertation is not proceeding satisfactorily and are unable to resolve the difficulty with your supervisor, you should seek advice by writing to the Programme Director Professor Abiodun Alao. If the Programme Director is your dissertation supervisor, the letter should go to Dr Eka Ikpe. Supervisors have been allocated based on availability and expertise. This means that not all of you may get your first choice. All members of staff are capable of supervising you within their broad disciplinary expertise, even if the subject matter might differ a little. Hence, there is no reason to change supervisors unless you are particularly unhappy with the arrangement for specific reasons. If so, please discuss this with the Programme Director Professor Abiodun Alao. By the end of supervision in June, you should at least have 1) a defined topic and research question(s)/hypothesis, 2) a chapter breakdown of the whole dissertation, 3) a work plan for the coming months, 4) an approach/methodology. Ideally, you should also have received feedback on your outline.
  • 27. Planning your Work When you are planning your schedule, please remember that your own time and 12 application is only one of the determining factors. You need to take into account your supervisor’s time as well as your own when you are estimating overall time needed. Data collection – including the selection of literature and publicly available data- always takes longer than you expect, as does, for example, the analysing and writing up of chapters, and even the completion of your reference list. Be on the safe side and double your first estimate. Organising your work is of key importance. You should build up separate reference files of material as the study develops including notes of all documents read, and photocopies or computer files of particularly useful papers or diagrams, and notes of all meetings and discussions. Ensure that all references are complete, using the styles of Harvard or Chicago Systems that are in accordance with the ALC House Style – in other words, use footnoting instead of in-text citation. Allow time for the development of ideas and arguments through revision and redrafting and full discussions of each section of study. Preparing summaries of each section as part of the drafts can
  • 28. help you achieve this. Remember to make back-up copies of work held on hard or portable media. You should never rely on only portable memory storage. This can be unreliable and failure to make back-up copies may result in loss of work. There is no excuse for not backing-up your files. Note that any such ‘disasters’ of lost work will not justify late submission. Make sure you leave plenty of time to proofread work, format the layout, which should be done on hardcopies instead of on-screen, and chase-up any remaining references and print the final copies; these invariably take much longer than you expect. The use of automated referencing is recommended. King’s College regulations on late submission of coursework (please click on link for more details) A student who either fails to submit material for assessment or submits after the deadline and has not made a request for an extension under Regulations 18.1 or 18.4 above, or who has not satisfied the Chair of the Assessment Sub Board that their mitigating circumstances offer valid reasons for submitting late work, will have an automatic penalty applied. Work submitted within 24 hours of the deadline will be marked but the mark awarded will be no greater than the pass mark. Work submitted after the 24 hour deadline will
  • 29. receive a mark of zero; such a student may, at the discretion of the relevant Assessment Sub Board, be permitted to attempt the assessment again if the regulations for the programme permit such reassessment. The Writing Process A golden rule is to write down as much as you can from as early on as you can – and your task will become easier. There are several good reasons for this advice. For some people, actually getting thoughts down on paper presents one of the biggest stumbling blocks. If you feel this way, take comfort that this is a common feeling. However, this must be overcome early in the process. Quite often, it is difficult to spot the flaws in your reasoning until it is set out on paper, so you are well advised to write up bits and pieces in draft as early as possible. Early sessions with your supervisor should be followed by a period where you get down on paper and develop ideas that have been mentioned.   • 30. Try and have achievable goals within the wider project –commit to writing sections of the overall dissertation. A word of caution though: you must read them all again and make sure there is a central linear narrative that runs through your document, once you have finished all ‘chapters’. Allow at least two weeks for this essential final edit, as returning to sections you have written earlier allows you to see mistakes that pass you by at the time: you can greatly improve your mark by editing your work properly. The Dissertation Proposal With a little tinkering, your Dissertation Proposal can double as the introduction to your dissertation. This serves to map out how you are going to proceed with this project. For your supervisor, it is a check that the idea is workable before you go ahead with it all. Your supervisor will give you verbal feedback on the proposal within a month of your handing it in. The 3 page proposal (1000 words limit) has 5 important elements: • Statement of main research topic and why it’s worth doing • Possible research questions and/or case studies you might want to focus on. (These can be ideas you will further define in early May.) • Literature overview or how your project relates to the literature out there and where it’s going to make a unique contribution.
  • 31. • Personal timetable- the plan of how you will research, write, and edit your work. Please factor in when you will meet with your supervisor, take any trips for interviews or special libraries, and by what dates you will complete different sections • Bibliography- of what you’ve done so far and what you might still want to cover (NOTE, this bibliography is NOT included in your word count).   • 32. 14 in one of your modules, be careful not to self-plagiarise. This is when you take chunks of writing from another paper and use it in your dissertation. You can use the ideas and quotes and explore the same themes, just make sure it is a fresh piece of writing. Collecting Primary Data Primary data collection includes work in archives, carrying out interviews, surveys, life histories, or participant observation. Collecting primary data for your dissertation is not necessary, as the emphasis can be on desk research (i.e., case studies based on existing research/literature, analysis of existing data sets, policy documents, research and policy reports). However, you can also complement such sources with some primary research. If you plan to travel abroad for primary research you need to discuss this carefully with your supervisor, as such research involves specific risks with regard to data collection, and time constrictions –your supervisor will not be available to support your writing process in the summer months for example.

Introduction 1.1 This Core Code sets out the policy of King’s College London on good practice in all matters concerning postgraduate taught dissertations. A copy of the Core Code will be made available to all postgraduate students and supervisors on an annual basis1. It will be reviewed annually by the College Postgraduate Taught Sub-committee, on behalf of the College Education Committee2. 1.2 The Core Code should be read in conjunction with the guidelines set out in the appropriate Faculty (Institute/School) and Departmental3 or dissertation module handbook, the relevant ‘Academic regulations4, T Regulations concerning students and General regulations’ of King’s College London, procedures for quality assurance of taught programmes published under the authority of the Academic Board of the College and programme specifications. 1.3 The term ‘research’ in the Core Code has been interpreted in its broadest sense and may encompass a range of data-collection methods. The different types of dissertation adopted by the College and covered in this Code can be found in Appendix 1.
  • 36. 1.4 Supervision of postgraduate taught students is influenced by many factors including the individuals involved, the type of work, the discipline, the size of the department and the environment in which students and supervisors work. Some variation across an institution as large and complex as the College is therefore inevitable. Faculty (Institute/School) practice may, therefore strengthen and build upon the Core Code, which should be seen as laying down the minimum standards expected. 2. Purpose of the Core Code 2.1 The purpose of this Core Code is to provide a framework for the effective management and implementation of good practice in all matters relating to postgraduate taught research activities at King’s College London. 2.2 It aims to ensure that all students are effectively supported and supervised so that: study is made available/agreed with the student developed. the timeframe laid down by the programme

The format of a master’s research dissertation 3.1 The research project is a core requirement for a taught Master’s degree6 at King’s and is the key element distinguishing the Master’s degree from a professional certificate or postgraduate diploma programme. 3.2 The structure of a taught master’s programme in the College varies and may differ from the traditional format that it is taken over 1 calendar year Full Time or 2 years Part Time7. 3.3 This normally comprises a workload over 45-46 weeks plus holidays, to average 40 hours per week. This equates to a total of 180 credits at ‘M’ level, of which the taught master’s research dissertation forms a significant component, usually 60 credits (as described in Appendix 1). 3.4 Details of the structure and format of the taught Master’s research project should be documented in a dissertation handbook. 3.5 Word count limits would normally include footnotes and endnotes. It does not include bibliography, references, or appendices unless otherwise specified in student handbooks. 4. Supervision 4.1 Normally each student pursuing a dissertation will be allocated a research supervisor. Some
  • 39. programmes utilise a research practice project model; students on these programmes will have their work on this project overseen by a module convenor8 rather than a supervisor (further details can be found in Appendix 3). 4.2 Supervisors and module convenors should consult the College Core Code (and where appropriate their Faculty (Institute/School) for guidance on policy, regulation and good practice relating to the supervision of students. 4.3 Supervisors and module convenors should hold regular9 supervision meetings with their students, on an individual or a collective basis dependent upon the dissertation model (Appendix 1), and where deemed necessary should keep a record of those meetings. Supervisors may require students to provide this formal record. 4.4 For programmes delivered online similar arrangements will need to be made electronically. 4.5 When a student’s supervisor is unable to perform their required supervisory duties for more than one month, s/he should inform the student and appropriate authority within the Faculty (Institute/School) and make appropriate arrangements for cover. The Head of Department/Division should ensure that appropriate cover is provided. 6 MRes degrees have different requirements as shown in Appendix 1 7 Professional programmes such as those in the Dental Institute,

Physiotherapy and Medical Engineering may run over 2-4 years in accordance with professional body requirements. 1+3 programmes such as the MPhil Stud in Philosophy 8 This may occur in the Dickson Poon School of Law 9 Happening over a period of time to establish a pattern, though not necessarily a strict one 5 4.6 Heads of Department or a delegated named representative are responsible for making appropriate arrangements in the case of students changing or wishing to change, their supervisor, where it is deemed necessary. 4.7 Heads of Department or a delegated named representative are responsible for ensuring that students are aware of their responsibilities in relation to the Health and Safety at Work Act, occupational health clearance, CRB checks and visa requirements where appropriate. 4.8 Students are responsible for the submission of their dissertation and are permitted to submit their work in the absence of approval from the supervisor. Programmes that require dissertations to be are ‘signed-off’ by the supervisor must provide details of this process in the module handbook. 4.9 It is the student’s responsibility to make sure the research
  • 41. dissertation is submitted on time (Appendix 3) 5. Ethical approval and statutory requirements 5.1 Supervisors and module convenors should notify students of their obligation to obtain ethical approval. Ethical approval is required for all research that involves human participants. This is sometimes applicable to the use of data derived from humans. Studies, requiring ethical review, must not begin without full approval. Students should be aware that this is a mandatory requirement of the College and that conducting research without such approval constitutes misconduct. 5.2 Students may sometimes require ethical approval for the re- use of secondary data. This is appropriate if the data is sensitive, or identifies individuals. Some research work can be socially or environmentally sensitive. This may also require approval. This is due to legal or other governance requirements. Such studies do not usually require approval from the College. For example, the NHS has its own research ethics committees

In such cases supervisors have responsibility for ensuring that students have ethical approval and that other statutory requirements such as for GM work and animal work are in place. 5.4 Research which does not fall under the remit of the NHS should be submitted to one of the review bodies accountable to the College Research Ethics Committee (where the project involves human participation in some form, or in certain cases use of data derived from humans). http://www.kcl.ac.uk/innovation/research/support/ethics/commit tees/index.aspx, This page will direct you to the correct review procedure for your Faculty (Institute/School). 6. Extensions 6.1 Overview 6.1.1 An extension is when a student’s submission is extended beyond the original deadline as set out by the academic regulations.   • 43. 6 circumstances for seeking extensions of postgraduate taught research dissertation submission deadlines and advice when considering such requests. 6.1.2 Any request for an extension to a dissertation submission deadline must be made as soon as the student is aware that they will be unable to meet the original published deadline due to acceptable circumstances. 6.2 Applications for extension requests for submission deadlines must be approved at Programme/Departmental level. In order for an extension to a dissertation submission deadline to be approved, a Mitigating Circumstances Form10 must be submitted. Details for applying for an extension can be found at: http://www.kcl.ac.uk/aboutkings/quality/academic/assessment/m itcir.aspx If at all possible the student should continue to work towards the original published deadline until the outcome of the extension request is known. 6.3 It is expected that the Programme/Department will reach a decision on the student’s request as soon as is reasonably possible. 6.4 Supervisors and/or the programme team should encourage students to discuss difficulties in meeting the deadline at the earliest opportunity. It is important that students on distance- learning programmes are aware of the regulations governing
  • 44. extensions and have easy access to the appropriate forms. 6.5 A request close to the original published deadline may not be considered until after the deadline has passed. In that situation the student should submit their work as soon as is reasonably possible after the deadline, even if they have not been notified of the outcome of their extension request. The student should be aware that in such instances, if their reasons for requesting an extension are deemed unacceptable, their work will receive a mark dependent on the time that has passed since the original submission date. 6.6 Absences for relevant training or time spent in industry should not lead to an extension or change to the submission date. 6.7 Illness 6.7.1 If a student experiences ongoing medical/health problems throughout their studies but decides they do not wish to interrupt their studies, information must be kept on record in case an extension to their dissertation submission deadline is required nearer the time. 6.7.2 Short periods of absence through illness during the research period should be brought to the attention of the supervisor by the student and recorded by the programme team/supervisor and/or brought directly to the attention of the

Without supporting documentation, an extension may not be granted. 6.7.4 Students learning by distance should be permitted to provide original medical documents/certificates and other supporting evidence electronically
  • 46. 6.7.5 If an accident/unexplained illness that affects a student during or in the lead up to the submission of the dissertation the student must submit a mitigating circumstances form12. The form can be submitted no later than 7 calendar days after the date of a missed deadline. 6.7.6 In cases of illness or injury that involve absences of more than two weeks, the student should inform the supervisor and/or programme team/ department and medical certificates should be requested. Where a student is or is expected to be absent for more than two months, whether consequently or cumulatively then the appropriate administrative unit should be informed, and arrangements put in place to interrupt the programme of study where appropriate. 6.8 Other 6.8.1 For maternity leave, up to nine month’s interruption can be approved automatically and the date of research dissertation submission extended. Students can also apply for up to three further months, and again the date of submission would be extended. For paternity leave, students can take up to 10 days automatically (which will not affect the date of submission); students may also take up to 13 weeks within 12 months of birth or whatever is permitted by government legislation. If the additional time is taken, the date of submission will be extended by the appropriate period.
  • 47. 6.8.2 Where a student has experienced difficulties with their supervisor it is the responsibility of the Head of Department/Division or designated representative to deal with/rectify this as quickly as possible. Therefore such circumstances, unless in extreme cases, should not be the sole grounds for seeking an extension. 7. Marking and formative feedback to students 7.1 All dissertations are to be double marked according to the College’s Marking Framework (Model 2). External examiners shall have sight of both markers feedback and marks, along with a note of how the final mark has been agreed. 7.2 The marking can be independent of the supervisor or supervisor-led but there should be a standardized department approach to the marking. 7.3 All students should be provided with one opportunity for receiving formative feedback prior to the final submission of the dissertation. This formative feedback can either be feedback of one chapter or feedback of numerous chapters. The Department should agree what approach to be taken. 8.   • 48. itcir.aspx http://www.kcl.ac.uk/aboutkings/quality/academic/assessment/m itcir.aspx 8 8.1 All Programmes are expected to have procedures in place to collect feedback from students regarding the dissertation experience and support infrastructure as a whole even if comprised of more than one module. 8.2 The College participates in the national Postgraduate Taught Experience Survey (PTES) which gives postgraduate taught students the particular opportunity to feedback their dissertation experience13. 8.3 It is acknowledged that some students may not have started on their dissertations by the time PTES closes and that its value as a conduit for feedback in these cases may be limited. 8.4 However, where possible it is expected within this code of practice that note is made and action taken if necessary by programme/department/ Faculty (Institutes/School) in response to feedback from students about their research experience. 9. Complaints and appeals

Appendix 1: College Postgraduate Taught Dissertation Framework Rationale It is a College commitment that as a research-intensive university the development of an understanding of research methodology, design and practice should lie at the core of all masters’ programmes. In order to instigate greater clarity whilst ensuring probity and rigour across the College and in order to ensure that the research process is embedded within programmes in a fair and transparent manner the following types of dissertation should be adopted. Programmes will select the most appropriate type for their programmes with the overall aim of enabling students to demonstrate specialised understanding and independent critical evaluation. In accordance with the QAA Masters Characteristics all Masters programmes must include an element of research as a core component of the programme as described by the following models15. Programmes included in the framework Master of Science (MSc); Master of Arts (MA); Master Public Health (MPH); Master Teaching and Learning (MTL); Master of Laws (LLM); Master Business Administration (MBA); Master Clinical Dentistry (MClinDent) and Master Music (MMus) Programmes must provide students with details of the specific dissertation(s) models that they intend to apply.

This model also applies to the theoretical analysis of a mathematical problem involving original mathematical investigations, computer experiments such as particle phenomenology and or atomistic simulation. Ethical approval may be required for certain topics. Credit value: 60. Max word limit: normally 15, 000 Model 2 - Retrospective/secondary data research dissertation This model applies to those research projects that make use of publically available electronic datasets or an existing dataset from previously undertaken local research. This model may also include the collection and analysis of retrospective clinical material or the theoretical analysis of a mathematical problem following the collection and analysis of data applied to existing mathematical models that are relevant for the problem itself. This model can also apply to the evaluation of the performance of laboratory equipment or comparison of difference analytical techniques. Credit value: 60. Max word limit: normally 15, 000 Model 4 - Composition-based research dissertation This model is only applicable in fields such as music and digital humanities and the main outcome of the research is presented in a practical format. For music, this may take the form of a composition and/or performance material. For digital humanities, the project may be comprised of 'software’ (normally conceived as a prototype or model) that expresses a significant part of the intellectual work, (e.g. a database design that models a real-world phenomenon that is being investigated).

Max word limit: normally 7, 500 (textual element) Model 5 - Information/library-based research dissertation This model applies to those research projects that are library- based and will involve the systematic review and/or meta-analysis of a specific topic. This model may also include the analysis of legal and/or philosophical sources demonstrating advanced skills in legal and/or philosophical analysis or a systematic review using information technology of the state of the art in theoretical physics or mathematics. A candidate may be required to include text that describes the method used for the evaluation and/or analysis of the knowledge base. Credit value: 60 Max word limit: normally 15, 000 Model 6 - Artefact construction and analysis dissertation This model applies to fields such as Informatics, where an artefact is constructed with a view to answering a particular research question. The artefact can take a variety of forms, such as one or more algorithms; a formal mathematical model; representation formalisms to encode data, information or knowledge; software applications; a robot with control software; a design or; a theoretical model of framework; etc. A candidate may be required to provide a demonstration of the artefact and material related to the artefact, such as source code, installation instructions, and

The practice-based research project can take different forms, such as the submission of a framework for documentation for clients/service users, or the critical evaluation of a practice- oriented case study. Students may also be able to continue a single research topic across the four modules to build a portfolio. A candidate may take up to two online modules that describes research methodology and analytical tools used for the evaluation and/or analysis of the knowledge base. The candidate will study using a mixture of online and campus-based modules linked to critical research methodology and practice.
