Mr. Miles provides information for students in Track 2/3 7th grade social studies class at Durant Road Middle School. Students should check the team website and Mr. Miles' video for more details on the class. Students will use Google Classroom to complete assignments and are given class codes to join. The grading policy is based 100% on summative assessments which demonstrate mastery of topics, while formative assessments provide feedback but do not affect grades. Students will learn history starting from the Age of Exploration through a flipped classroom model using short videos for initial learning.

Grading Policy
Grades are based on the following categories and percentages:
● Summative Assessments: 100%
● Formative Assessments: 0%
2. Track 2/3 - 7th Grade Social Studies
Grading Explained
Summative assessments are any assignment (test, project, quiz, classwork) where students can show mastery of a
topic. While the scope of each assignment will be different, I believe each assignment is equally important.
Formative assessments are designed to assess a student’s understanding during their learning process. These
activities do not count as grades, but they provide important information for you, your child and myself during the
learning process. For example, I might assign a writing piece that I provide feedback on to help students
grow/learn. If a student did not do the assignment, it will not affect their actual grade but it will show in
PowerSchool as a 0. If a student did the assignment, it will not affect their grade but it will show in Powerschool as
a 100. Those formative assignments directly impact the summative assignments as process leads to mastery.

What We Will Learn
Starting in the Age of Exploration, we’ll learn how history has had a cause/effect relationship in shaping our world.
The Flipped Classroom
The Flipped Classroom is an innovative and efficient method of instruction. I’ve created a series of short videos tha
I’ll ask students to watch at home (or in class) so they can come to class with some prior knowledge. We will spend
some class time unpacking those short concepts from the videos, but then we will dig deep and challenge students
to think critically and creatively. All videos can be found on my website (see above).
