Dear fellow Disciples,
On behalf of the Hookerton District, it is our privilege to invite you to
the 168th Regional Assembly of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in
North Carolina, meeting April 22-24, 2016, in Greenville, North Carolina.
This year’s Assembly will be held at the beautiful Greenville Convention
Center, located at 303 Greenville Boulevard SW. The Convention Center is
within easy walking distance of the assembly hotels, area restaurants, and
Greenville’s shopping district.
Our Assembly theme is the Great Commission from Matthew 28: 19-
20: “Go Forth and Make Disciples of All Nations.” Dr. Ron Allen of Christian
Theological Seminary, Indianapolis, and Dr. Penny Ziemer of Carr Memorial
Christian Church, Clinton, will serve as our preachers for the event, helping us
to understand Jesus’ call and commission.
In addition, assembly-goers will have the opportunity to put the Great
Commission into action. On Saturday morning, we will gather together at the
Third Street Community Center for a time of mission work and service. Per-
sons remaining at the Convention Center will also have the choice of in-house
mission opportunities or workshops to attend.
General church mission conversations, Disciples Women’s Ministries
and Christian Men’s Fellowship meals, the Barton College Sprinkle and Purcell
lectures, a full slate of youth events, Sunday morning worship in our area
churches, and more will round out this year’s Assembly. Be sure to read care-
fully this brochure to learn about all that will be happening.

Go Forth. Not much of a phrase on its own. It seems a bit
like a 16th century 'get off my lawn' or 'get lost'. Two
phrases that the church should strive to avoid. So Go
Forth needs context, a setting, perhaps even a church set-
ting. With that setting should be some sort of purpose or
goal as well. Go Forth and do something.
We might Go Forth from the Garden. Because being fruit-
ful and multiplying has been a fairly reliable program for
church growth through the centuries, especially if we
chose to not get bogged down in the rest of the story. But
this is something else; at least that's the vision. Of course
Going Forth from the Garden was a rather fixed geo-
graphical field. And we were essentially dealing with our-
selves; something else that seems reliable in church pro-
grams.
Go Forth. To the nations. And do something. Go Forth to
the nations and make disciples, teach, baptize. YES, Mat-
thew has given context and the Risen Christ has illuminat-
ed purpose and direction. This group of rather broken hu-
mans; these disciples of Christ who are working amongst
Post Traumatic Soul Distress, suicide, unbelievable cele-
brations, horror, cultural tensions, diminished secular
power/authority, and who knows what else; they are told
to Go Forth to the nations and do something.
Go Forth discipling (what does it mean to be a disciple
anyway?), Go Forth teaching (the things of God in the
Christ), Go Forth baptizing (drawing the circle of com-
munion ever larger). Doesn't sound like a recipe for suc-
cess, but where does success fall into Go Forth. It is in-
stead who we -this great variety in God- are, it is what we
do, it is our lot, our call, and our charge. We are ordained
to this purpose. Go Forth…

What is Mission First?
Mission First! addresses the need to find a new shared focus in mis-
sion. We are not setting aside pro-reconciliation/anti-racism, new
and transforming churches or leadership development.
Mission First! seeks to help Disciples identify the next mission priori-
ties God has for us as we move toward the year 2020 and beyond. Read more about the process.
INPUT
Disciples gather and give input. Disciples will give their input on what’s important in their communities
through Mission Gatherings. Congregations will gather in regional areas and tell their stories.
IDENTIFY
Identifying common themes. After the Mission Gatherings, a Mission Council will meet to read through the
stories, suggestions, and testimonies and identify common mission themes important to Disciples.
IMPLEMENT
Implementing the mission directions. The mission directions are forwarded to ministries to resource con-
gregations for those areas. A governance board would continue to hold covenantally ministries accounta-
ble for their mission direction.
IMPACT
Making an impact. With appropriate resources and support, Disciples can make an impact within their
communities. As mission directions evolve or change with the needs of the time, the process can begin
again and refocus Disciples’ mission.

REV. DR. RONALD J. AREV. DR. RONALD J. AREV. DR. RONALD J. ALLEN,LLEN,LLEN, is a native of Poplar Bluff Missouri and ordained
in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). Ronald is the Professor of Preaching and
Gospels and Letters. He has been at Christian Theological Seminary of Indianapolis,
Indiana, since 1982. He received the PhD degree from Drew University (1977), the
MDiv from Union Theological Seminary in New York (1974), and the AB from Phillips
University (1971). From 1977 to 1982 he and his spouse, the Reverend Linda
McKiernan-Allen, were co-ministers of First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ),
Grand Island, Nebraska. Rev. McKiernan-Allen is currently Minister at West Street
Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Tipton, Indiana. In addition to over 100
articles and chapters in books, Allen is the author of more than forty books.

Indianapolis, IN, holds a Master of Divinity from the Divinity School at the
University of Chicago, and earned his B.A. in religious studies with a minor in
environmental sciences from Texas Christian University. He joins Week of
Compassion after serving more than 5 years with Church World Service for the
Southwest Regional Office where he worked with congregations and donors to
increase their fundraising portfolio. Prior to his work with Church World Service, Vy
worked with the Lutheran Volunteer Corps office in Berkeley, CA where he
strengthened relationships between volunteers, congregations, and non-profit agencies.

DR. CHRISTOPHER ROLLDR. CHRISTOPHER ROLLDR. CHRISTOPHER ROLLSTON,STON,STON, is the Associate Professor of Northwest
Semitic languages and literatures at George Washington University,
Washington, DC. He earned his MA (1996) and Ph.D. (1999) at The Johns
Hopkins University (Department of Near Eastern Studies) in ancient Northwest
Semitic Languages and Literatures. He is a member of Phi Beta
Kappa. Professor Rollston was a full-time faculty member in the Dept. of Near
Eastern Studies at Johns Hopkins University for two years (as a Post-Doctoral
Fellow of Northwest Semitic). For around a decade he held the Toyozo Nakarai
Professorship of Old Testament and Semitic languages at Emmanuel School of Religion, where he was a
popular teacher and mentor. During the spring semester of 2014, he was a Visiting Professor of
Northwest Semitic Literature at Tel Aviv University. Rollston has excavated in Syria (Umm el-Marra) and
in Israel (Megiddo), and he has conducted research at museums and departments of antiquity in
Lebanon, Israel, Jordan, and Syria, as well as various museums in North America and Europe.

DR. DOUGLAS SEARCY,DR. DOUGLAS SEARCY,DR. DOUGLAS SEARCY, was announced as the 12th president of Barton Col-
lege on Friday, January 9, 2015. Prior to his appointment at the University of Mary
Washington, he served as dean of student affairs at Wingate University. Dr. Searcy
also served in earlier administrative staff roles at Elon University, Gardner-Webb Uni-
versity, and Appalachian State University. His academic credentials include a Doctor
of Philosophy degree in Leadership in Higher Education from the University of Nebras-
ka with a dissertation emphasis on presidential leadership during strategic transi-
tions. Dr. Searcy earned his Master of Education degree from the University of South
Carolina and his Bachelor of Arts degree in Communications/Public Relations and
English from Mars Hill University, where he was a Marshbanks-Anderson Scholar and
graduated cum laude.

REV. DR. PENNY ZIEMEREV. DR. PENNY ZIEMEREV. DR. PENNY ZIEMER, PASTORR, PASTORR, PASTOR Carr Memorial CC, Clinton, NC
Dr. Penny Ziemer is an ordained minister with the Christian Church, Disciples of
Christ. In 1994, Penny was called to First Christian Church, Goldsboro, North Caroli-
na, as Minister of Spiritual Enrichment where she still leads a Disciples Women’s
Reflection/Prayer group on alternate Tuesdays. In addition, Penny teaches religion,
literature and public speaking classes as an adjunct for Mt. Olive College. She has
taught courses on Introduction to the Old Testament (Hebrew Canon), Introduction
to the New Testament, World Religions, and Christian Ethics, and more recently,
Introduction to the Bible and Christianity and the Human Religious Experience. She
has also taught a course in spiritual formation for the Christian Church in North Carolina Lay Academy.
Penny also currently serves as pastor for Carr Memorial Christian Church in Clinton, NC.

REV. JOHN RICHARDSOREV. JOHN RICHARDSOREV. JOHN RICHARDSON, REGIONAL MINISTERN, REGIONAL MINISTERN, REGIONAL MINISTER,,, is gifted with administra-
tive skills, which allows him to lead with compassion and spiritual integrity. He
studied to show himself approved and enhanced his spiritual gifts by obtaining his
Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Harding University in Searcy,
Arkansas and a Master of Divinity degree from Austin Presbyterian Theological
Seminary in Austin, Texas. Rev. Richardson served as the Director of Development
at Campbell-Stone Christian Centers, Atlanta, Georgia. Currently, he is in his 14th
year as the Regional Minister for the Christian Church in North Carolina. He lends
his administrative talent by volunteering his expertise to others, serving on the
Board of Directors for: Barton College, the United Church of Christ Insurance Board,
the National City Christian Church Corporation, and the National Carolina Council of
Churches; he also serves on the Week of Compassion Advisory Committee.

REV. DR. SHARON STANREV. DR. SHARON STANREV. DR. SHARON STANLEYLEYLEY---RHEA,RHEA,RHEA, Sharon is Director of Refugee & Immigration
Ministries for the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). She is an employee of Disciples
Home Missions, with her office located in Washington, D.C., on the second floor at National
City Christian Church. She works to mobilize Disciples congregations around the country to
offer hospitality to immigrants, provide refugee resettlement assistance to refugees, seek
justice for farm workers, and engage in advocacy on behalf of refugees and
immigrants. Prior to joining DHM, Sharon served for 19 years as the Founder and
Executive Director of Fresno Interdenominational Refugee Ministries, which provides
wholistic ministries to thousands of refugees annually in California’s Central Valley. She holds a doctor of
ministry degree from Columbia Theological Seminary, earned a Masters of Divinity degree from San
Francisco Theological Seminary, has studied in Indonesia and China, and lived for many years in a low
income Fresno, California neighborhood nicknamed after a refugee camp in Thailand. She loves
traveling, and enjoys running daily with her beagle.

REV. ANNELL GEORGE MREV. ANNELL GEORGE MREV. ANNELL GEORGE MCLAWHORN,CLAWHORN,CLAWHORN, is an ordained minister with the
Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). She has served in ministry in North Carolina since
1984. As a minister she has served the church in many capacities including the local
pastorate, regional ministry, interim ministry, Week of Compassion Disaster Relief, and
most recently a facilitator for Hope Partnership for Missional Transformation. Annell is a
spoon and glass artisan. She has recently become the owner of Half Moon Marketplace
(formerly Southern Frills) in Snow Hill, NC. Half Moon Marketplace is a maker’s market and boutique
that encourages its vendors to “Give-Back” and to invest in “Fair Trade”. She is married to Ed, a senior
engineer with Duke Energy Progress. Daughter, Emily, is a violinist and middle-school orchestra teacher
in Wake County. Her son, Avery, is a senior chemistry major at NCSU.

REV. GEORGE FULLER,REV. GEORGE FULLER,REV. GEORGE FULLER, MDiv, D.Min, CSA, Certified Mediator has dedicated his life
to helping people navigate the challenges that confront them. As a minister for 35 years
George was drawn to those who struggle and are often overlooked. He discovered his gift
for helping people sort through their issues, find the strength they need, and move into
lives of purpose and vitality.
Silver Compassion was born out of George’s desire to share the wisdom and practical
insights gained from his ministry and a 13 year journey of caring for both his parents and in-laws
throughout their end of life. He discovered how complex and emotionally draining it was to be a
caregiver. While he longed for more time to love and spend time with those precious to him, he needed
to find information and advice. Now he knows what could have been done in advance that would have
allowed him to focus on simply loving them during their final years, months and days.
George holds a MDiv and Doctorate of Divinity and is a Certified Senior Advisor (CSA) through the
Society of Certified Senior Advisors and a volunteer for SHIIP, the Seniors' Health Insurance Information
Program and has a thorough understanding of Medicare and access to the quarterly updates issued by
the NC Dept. of Insurance. He’s also a trained mediator in Family/Financial Mediation and Superior
Court Mediation with extensive experience in Transformative Mediation.

REV. JAMIE EUBANKS,REV. JAMIE EUBANKS,REV. JAMIE EUBANKS, has served as the Chaplain of Barton College in Wilson,
N.C., since June 2013. His responsibilities include supervision of all campus ministry
programs; facilitating weekly worship services; coordinating annual events such as the
Barton College Day of Service, Alternative Spring Break, Lighting of the Luminaries,
and college retreats; and representing Barton at Regional and General Assemblies for
the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). He also provides counseling and support
during family emergencies for students, faculty, and staff within the campus community. Reverend
Eubanks completed a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology from Greensboro College in Greensboro,
N.C., and a Master of Divinity degree from Lexington Theological Seminary in Lexington, Ky. He and his
wife, Leah, live in Raleigh with their young daughter Kayla, and their family dog, Lily.

REV. JAMIE & RENAE BREV. JAMIE & RENAE BREV. JAMIE & RENAE BRAME,RAME,RAME, Renae has been the Executive Director of
Swannanoa Valley Christian Ministry in Black Mountain since 2002. She recently
announced her retirement, which will be effective at the end of May of this year. She
was the Superintendent of Black Mountain Correctional Center for Women from
1989 – 2001. She enjoys writing and playing original music, daily prayer time,
walking, water-color painting, decorating, stained-glass making, and many other arts
and crafts. She is the author of the book Daily Devotions with Our Beloved.
The Reverend Jamie Brame is an ordained minister of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and the
Church Relations Director at Christmount, where he has worked since 1989. Prior to that, he pastored a

Duke Divinity School. He is an avid reader and enjoys leading prayer retreats, as well as his continuing
involvement in youth ministry through the Christmount camping program. He has keynoted regional
youth events in North Carolina, Georgia, and Kentucky. The Brames live in Black Mountain with their cat,
Penny, who is warming to the idea of live music in her house.

and taught across the country and overseas. His studies were at Atlantic Christian College, now Barton
College, in Wilson; Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tenn.; Centre College; Eureka College in Illinois;
Concordia Theological Seminary in St. Louis; University of Tuebingen, Germany; University of Virginia in
Charlottesville, Va.; and UNC. He was ordained by the Christian Church, DOC, in North Carolina and First
Christian Church in Washington, N.C., in 1971. He has taught at the University of the South in Sewanee,
Tenn.; Eureka College; and Vanderbilt Divinity School, where he also was dean of the Disciples Divinity
House. He was president and professor of the History of Christianity at Lexington Theological Seminary in
Lexington, Ky.

Dear fellow Disciples,
When we met over a year ago to begin visioning for this year's 168th
Regional Assembly we put a lot of ideas on the table. We felt that as a re-
gion we needed to look beyond unity and move forward into what we
could do with our unity. We searched through scriptures and kept coming
back to Matthew 28: 19-20 "Go Forth and make Disciples of all Nations..."
This call on our faith to GO and BE is what has driven us over the past
year to this point, to us coming to Greenville, NC and experiencing wor-
ship, praise, fun, fellowship, learning, hearing the word, and mission to-
gether.
Mission is often considered a byword of our faith. It is about going out
and being Christ in the world. Mission challenges us to move beyond our
church walls and take our love of Christ into our communities. So that is
what we will be doing this weekend. Not only will we be hearing about and
discussing Mission First which is a denomination wide Christian Church
(Disciples of Christ) initiative on Friday afternoon, we also on Sat-
urday morning will GO FORTH into the Greenville community to
share in mission and in love.
So get excited about what is happening over this week-
end. Saturday morning will begin with our All Assembly Breakfast
at the Convention Center and from there we will pray for all who
are getting ready to GO FORTH. Some, alongside our youth, will
get in buses and vans and head to Greenville's Third Street Com-
munity Center. While there we will be able to help plant an or-
chard and berry bushes. Others will travel to some of the local
community gardens supported by Third Street to help with
planting and weeding. Even those who are unable to, for whatever
reason, make the trek out to the center can do some wonderful "Porch Gardens" at the Convention Cen-
ter. These gardens will be taken into the community for those in need of fresh produce at home. There
will also be opportunities to engage in conversations about other areas of mission at the two workshops
offered Saturday morning. Even our littlest youth will be doing something for the community around them
as they will help make cards for Vidant Medical Center and Children's Hospital.
Our hope and prayer is that we will take our unity as North Carolina Disciples of Christ and GO FORTH
in mission and in love to not just make disciples but to also be disciples. In the words of one of our team
members "When the Assembly concludes on Sunday, April 24th, may the people of Greenville say: "There
are those in our community
who have been healed.
Some have been given hope.
All have received a blessing,
and they have been granted
peace. Greenville has indeed
been changed forever, be-
cause the Disciples of Christ
have come to our town fol-
lowing their Lord who said,

spend both nights at First Christian Church (FCC).
