8. Showing Off Their Wealth
• In many music videos of this genre the artists are seen in expensive cars, clothes, watches and
sometimes houses.
• For example, in ‘It Was A Good Day’, Ice Cube is seen in an expensive lowrider and in the
‘Hypnotize’ music video he is seen in a yacht and is throwing money off the side.
• This is often done to show the audience what comes with ‘the Rockstar lifestyle’ and also can be
used to contest with other artists.
9. Low Camera Angles
• In these music videos there are a lot of low camera shots of the artists in the
music video.
• For example, in the ‘My Name Is’ music video he has many lower shots where
he raps into the camera and another low angle is seen in ‘It Was A Good Day’
where the artist is seen sitting on a bed with a low angle from far away
where he has his back to the camera.
10. Cars
• A lot of the music videos contain
cars, mostly expensive cars that
many rappers would've had in that
time period
• This would be to show off their
wealth but is also because they
thought these cars were 'cool'.
11. Narrative
• Most (if not all) of the videos are either telling a story or contain a
story in them which goes with the lyrics they are saying. Mostly
they’ll be a short clip that tells a story.
• For example, in 'It Was A Good Day' the entire video is telling a
story and some of them appear as flashbacks which are in black
and white.
12. Lighting
• A lot of these videos are either very dark or at least have clips
with darker lighting. However, a lot of the videos also contain very
bright clips. This contrasts the darker clips and there is rarely an
inbetween it is usually one or the other.
13. Editing
• Since the videos are very old the quality and editing of these
videos is very poor quality which means most of the things seen
are on set rather than computer edits.
