ROCK		SUPPORT
Rock	tunnel	support are	divided into two categories:
A) – Temporally support:
This is a	short-term measure only to	provide a	safe working envioronment for	continuous excavation.
Common	techniques are	bolts and	shotcrete.
B)	– Permanent support:
This is long-term support for	a	life-span of	the	tunnel.
The	methods available are	steel set,	cast-in	concrete,	concrete	segment,	bolt,	shotcrete (with	or	without steel
fibre	reinforcement).

“GLOBALSTONE-M” and “GLOBALSTONE-LV50”
- GLOBALSTONE-M (BOLTING SYSTEM FOR TUNNELLING AND MINING):
SEALING AND STRUCTURAL BONDING OF FISSURES AND CRACKS - two-component silicon-mineral-organic
formula with low viscosity, does not expand, with high mechanical strength. Ideal for waterproofing broken rocks,
consolidating land and rocks subject to land slide, filling cracks and cavities as well as for constructions, coatings and
insulating materials, for waterproofing the walls of tanks and aqueducts. Non-toxic and non-polluting.FIRE RESISTANT.
- GLOBALSTONE-LV50 (BOLTING SYSTEM FOR TUNNELLING AND MINING):
SEALING AND STRUCTURAL BONDING OF FISSURES AND CRACKS (FLEX) - STRATA CONSOLIDATION –
Organic-mineral two components resin, not expansible, characterized by low viscosity, excellent chimica stability,
mechanical resi stance and flexibility. Ideal for water-proofing fractured rock, consolidation of loose land and rock, crack
and cavity filling. Especially suitable for bonding injection drill bolts because the resins cure within just a few minutes and
the bolt can be loaded in a very short time. FIRE RESISTANT.

Flexure strenght: 26,50 Mpa at 24 h at 20 ° C and 60% R.H.
KEY FEATURES OF THE "FORMULATION" ARE:
Durability of “GLOBALSTONE” exceeding 500 years (we believe that can exceed 1,000- 2000 years without
being subject to any degradation): ability to resist weathering action, chemical attack, abrasion, or any
process of deterioration.
Ground support is necessary when voids (empty spaces) are created underground. Some means of support is required
in order to maintain the stability of the openings that are excavated.
The competeny of the rock being mined will determine how large a void may be created and what ground support
methods will be necessary to maintain a safe working environment.
THIS SUPPORT COMES IS TWO FORMS:
1) – AREA GROUND SUPPORT
Area ground support is used to prevent major ground failure. Holes are drilled into the back (celing) and walls and a long
steel rod (or rock bolt) is installed to hold thr ground together. There are three categories of rock bolt, differentiated by
how they engage the host rock. They are:
1.a) – Mechanically anchored bolts;
2.a) – Fully grouted rock bolts;
3.a) – Friction-anchored rock bolts.
2) – LOCAL GROUND SUPPORT
Local ground support is used to prevent smaller rock from falling from the backs and walls. Not all excavations require
local ground support.
Welded Wire Mesh is a metal screen with 100 x 100 mm (4 inch) openings. It is held to the backsusing point anchor
bolts or resin grouted rebar.
Shotcrete is fiber reinforced spray on concrete which coats the backs and walls preventing smaller rocks from falling.
Shotcrete thickness can be between 50 mm – 100 mm.

ROCK REINFORCEMENT ZONE STRESSED
REINFORCED ARCH IN ROCK
ROCK REINFORCEMENT
Mesh reinforcement can be used as an alternative if sprayed concrete is used to support clay
zones.
The mesh is anchored safely with bolts on each side of the zone before applying the sprayed
concrete.
It is important that the openingin the mesh is not too small so that there is between the
concrete and the rock surface.
Bar reinforcement is normally not used in pure arch structures, but is part of the sprayed
concrete ribs that are sometimes part of the arch.
MESH	REINFORCEMENT
Numerical modelling was carried out for the following three different types of supports:
Case 1)- Shotcrete and bolts with cast concrete lining atthe invert;
Case 2) - Bolts with reinforced ribs of shotcrete and castconcrete lining at the invert;
Case 3) - Fully cast concrete lined tunnel.
Case 1) was further sub-divided into the following manner to study the effect of installing the
cast concrete lining at the invert at different time intervals (steps) i.e.:
1a) - Shotcrete with bolts and then placing the invert lining after a certain time lag in the
model;
1b) - Shotcrete with bolts and invert lining placed simultaneously;
1c) - Shotcrete with bolts without any lining at the invert.

Hard Rock Cutterhead Design
CONSOLIDATION, PROBE DRILLS
Consolidation Drills:
Provision for dealing with weak rock conditions
provisions can be made by installing a pair of
roof bolters just behind the dust shield. This
allows a primary roof support in poor ground
conditions. Due to restricted available space,
systematic bolting should be done from the
back-up.
Probe Drills:
Most TBMs provide probe drill equipment, which are generally
hydraulic percussion hammers that allow drilling up to 50 m
ahead. Special rock sampling rigs are provided on request.
It is highly recommended to perform probe drilling outside the
tunnel diameter because if the probe hole jams the drill rod,
advancing of the TBM is not hindered. If drilling in the tunnel
cross-section and the drill rod gets stuck, it is hard to get the drill
rod out because the cutterhead is not able to cut the steel, and
this ultimately damages the cutters.

When the most important problem is water the basic principle of pre-ground treatment is to utilized the ground surrounnding the
tunnel as a load bearing ring and make it an integral part of the primary support and lining.
This conceprt can be reached by creating a tight ground ring around the lining so that the hydrostatic pressure inthe outer permeable
ground would act on the grouted ring instead of on the lining.

USING A LINE OF EPOXY-BASED PRODUCTS
“GLOBALPOX-I-10/128” and “GLOBALPOX-MALTA-15/190”
- GLOBALPOX-I-10/128:
LOW VISCOSITY INJECTION RESIN - two-component, solvent-free, low viscosity injection-liquid,
based om high strength epoxy resins.
Is used to fill and seal cavities and cracks in structural components such as foundations, slabs and
water-retaining structures, columns, beams, bridgs and tunnels. It not only forms an effective barrier
against water infiltrtation of corrosion promoting media, but also structurally bonds the concrete sections
together.
- GLOBALPOX-MALTA-15/190:
HIGH PERFORMANCE EPOXY GROUTING SYSTEM – three-components resin, high performance,
moisture tolerant, epoxy grouting system. Used for starter bars, anchors, bridge bearings, crane tracks,
light rail and permanent way in tunnels and bridges.

The injection must be adjusted to the actual degree of difficulty, ingeneral one must
drill holes distributed over the entire tunnel face, typically with spacing 1-1,5 m.
Appropriatelength of such screens are usually somewhat shorter than the normal
injection screen because of the difficult drillability.
Experience from operation in weathered and densely cracked rock mass have
demonstrated that systematic pre-grouting using resin (GLOBALSTONE or
GLOBALPOX) based injection agents has contributed to an improved blasted profile,
i.e. less rock fall that again has resulted in improved stability.
THE	INJECTION
Next activity is to establish an interaction between the sprayed layer and the rock
mass with use of rock bolts.
A fast interaction can be achieved by using polyester end anchored bolts. They
should thereafter be groutedbefore next blast.
Accuracy while installing the bolts is important. They should follow the theoretically
curvature of the tunnel and lengthwise also the center of the reinforcement.
Bolt drilling may start as soon as the sprayed concretehas reached acceptable
strength.

Refers to a group of undeground mining techniques
used to extract coal, oil shale, tar sands, salt and other
minerals or geological materials from sedimentary
(“soft”) rocks.
Mining deposits in sedimentary rocks are commonly
layered and relatively less hard.
Refers to various underground mining techniques used
to excavate hard rocks, mainly those containing metals
such as ore containing gold, silver, iron, copper, zinc,
nickel and lead, but also involves using the same
techniques for excavating ores of gems such as
diamonds.
Mining deposits in hard (sedimentary or igneous or
metamorphic) rocks are commonly massive and hard.
Mining can be done by any one of the following
methods:
1) - Longwall mining;
2) - Room-and-pillar mining;
3) - Blast mining;
4) - Shortwall mining;
5) - Coal Skimming.
Mining can be done by the following methods:
a) - Short-hole and Long-hole mining methods;
b) - Selective and unselective mining methods;
c) - Supported and Unsupported underground mining
methods.

Rock support methods

  • 1. February, 2015 LAMANNA Luigi Franco June, 2015SEPTEMBER, 2016 INJECTION SYSTEMS, CONSOLIDATION AND ANCHORING FOR THE MINING INDUSTRY, TUNNELLINGS AND ENGINEERING APRIL, 2018
  • 2. ROCK SUPPORT Rock tunnel support are divided into two categories: A) – Temporally support: This is a short-term measure only to provide a safe working envioronment for continuous excavation. Common techniques are bolts and shotcrete. B) – Permanent support: This is long-term support for a life-span of the tunnel. The methods available are steel set, cast-in concrete, concrete segment, bolt, shotcrete (with or without steel fibre reinforcement). EFFECTS OF CORROSION ..?.. • 4. “GLOBALSTONE-M” and “GLOBALSTONE-LV50” - GLOBALSTONE-M (BOLTING SYSTEM FOR TUNNELLING AND MINING): SEALING AND STRUCTURAL BONDING OF FISSURES AND CRACKS - two-component silicon-mineral-organic formula with low viscosity, does not expand, with high mechanical strength. Ideal for waterproofing broken rocks, consolidating land and rocks subject to land slide, filling cracks and cavities as well as for constructions, coatings and insulating materials, for waterproofing the walls of tanks and aqueducts. Non-toxic and non-polluting.FIRE RESISTANT. - GLOBALSTONE-LV50 (BOLTING SYSTEM FOR TUNNELLING AND MINING): SEALING AND STRUCTURAL BONDING OF FISSURES AND CRACKS (FLEX) - STRATA CONSOLIDATION – Organic-mineral two components resin, not expansible, characterized by low viscosity, excellent chimica stability, mechanical resi stance and flexibility. Ideal for water-proofing fractured rock, consolidation of loose land and rock, crack and cavity filling. Especially suitable for bonding injection drill bolts because the resins cure within just a few minutes and the bolt can be loaded in a very short time. FIRE RESISTANT. • 5. TECHNICAL DATA: Mixing ratio (A + B) : 100: 100 parts in weight (1: 1 in volume). Compressive strength: 55,9 Mpa at 24 h at 20 ° C and 60% R.H. Flexure strenght: 20,7 Mpa at 24 h at 20 ° C and 60% R.H. Tensile strenght: 14,2 Mpa at 24 h at 20 ° C and 60% R.H. TECHNICAL DATA: Mixing ratio (A + B) : 100: 83 parts in weight (1: 1 in volume). Compressive strength: 51,97 Mpa at 24 h at 20 ° C and 60% R.H. Flexure strenght: 26,50 Mpa at 24 h at 20 ° C and 60% R.H. KEY FEATURES OF THE "FORMULATION" ARE: Durability of “GLOBALSTONE” exceeding 500 years (we believe that can exceed 1,000- 2000 years without being subject to any degradation): ability to resist weathering action, chemical attack, abrasion, or any process of deterioration.
  • 6. Ground support is necessary when voids (empty spaces) are created underground. Some means of support is required in order to maintain the stability of the openings that are excavated. The competeny of the rock being mined will determine how large a void may be created and what ground support methods will be necessary to maintain a safe working environment. THIS SUPPORT COMES IS TWO FORMS: 1) – AREA GROUND SUPPORT Area ground support is used to prevent major ground failure. Holes are drilled into the back (celing) and walls and a long steel rod (or rock bolt) is installed to hold thr ground together. There are three categories of rock bolt, differentiated by how they engage the host rock. They are: 1.a) – Mechanically anchored bolts; 2.a) – Fully grouted rock bolts; 3.a) – Friction-anchored rock bolts. 2) – LOCAL GROUND SUPPORT Local ground support is used to prevent smaller rock from falling from the backs and walls. Not all excavations require local ground support. Welded Wire Mesh is a metal screen with 100 x 100 mm (4 inch) openings. It is held to the backsusing point anchor bolts or resin grouted rebar. Shotcrete is fiber reinforced spray on concrete which coats the backs and walls preventing smaller rocks from falling. Shotcrete thickness can be between 50 mm – 100 mm. All photos illustred (partial text) are copied from the WEB – Prof. Dr. H.Z. Harraz
  • 7. “GLOBALSTONE” ORGANO-MINERAL FOAM FOR STRATA CONSOLIDATION ROCK REINFORCEMENT ZONE STRESSED REINFORCED ARCH IN ROCK ROCK REINFORCEMENT
  • 8. Mesh reinforcement can be used as an alternative if sprayed concrete is used to support clay zones. The mesh is anchored safely with bolts on each side of the zone before applying the sprayed concrete. It is important that the openingin the mesh is not too small so that there is between the concrete and the rock surface. Bar reinforcement is normally not used in pure arch structures, but is part of the sprayed concrete ribs that are sometimes part of the arch. MESH REINFORCEMENT Numerical modelling was carried out for the following three different types of supports: Case 1)- Shotcrete and bolts with cast concrete lining atthe invert; Case 2) - Bolts with reinforced ribs of shotcrete and castconcrete lining at the invert; Case 3) - Fully cast concrete lined tunnel. Case 1) was further sub-divided into the following manner to study the effect of installing the cast concrete lining at the invert at different time intervals (steps) i.e.: 1a) - Shotcrete with bolts and then placing the invert lining after a certain time lag in the model; 1b) - Shotcrete with bolts and invert lining placed simultaneously; 1c) - Shotcrete with bolts without any lining at the invert. Hard Rock Cutterhead Design CONSOLIDATION, PROBE DRILLS Consolidation Drills: Provision for dealing with weak rock conditions provisions can be made by installing a pair of roof bolters just behind the dust shield. This allows a primary roof support in poor ground conditions. Due to restricted available space, systematic bolting should be done from the back-up. Probe Drills: Most TBMs provide probe drill equipment, which are generally hydraulic percussion hammers that allow drilling up to 50 m ahead. Special rock sampling rigs are provided on request. It is highly recommended to perform probe drilling outside the tunnel diameter because if the probe hole jams the drill rod, advancing of the TBM is not hindered. If drilling in the tunnel cross-section and the drill rod gets stuck, it is hard to get the drill rod out because the cutterhead is not able to cut the steel, and this ultimately damages the cutters.

This conceprt can be reached by creating a tight ground ring around the lining so that the hydrostatic pressure inthe outer permeable ground would act on the grouted ring instead of on the lining. !

  • 34. The injection must be adjusted to the actual degree of difficulty, ingeneral one must drill holes distributed over the entire tunnel face, typically with spacing 1-1,5 m. Appropriatelength of such screens are usually somewhat shorter than the normal injection screen because of the difficult drillability. Experience from operation in weathered and densely cracked rock mass have demonstrated that systematic pre-grouting using resin (GLOBALSTONE or GLOBALPOX) based injection agents has contributed to an improved blasted profile, i.e. less rock fall that again has resulted in improved stability. THE INJECTION Next activity is to establish an interaction between the sprayed layer and the rock mass with use of rock bolts. A fast interaction can be achieved by using polyester end anchored bolts. They should thereafter be groutedbefore next blast. Accuracy while installing the bolts is important. They should follow the theoretically curvature of the tunnel and lengthwise also the center of the reinforcement. Bolt drilling may start as soon as the sprayed concretehas reached acceptable strength. RADIAL BOLTS

Mining deposits in sedimentary rocks are commonly layered and relatively less hard. Refers to various underground mining techniques used to excavate hard rocks, mainly those containing metals such as ore containing gold, silver, iron, copper, zinc, nickel and lead, but also involves using the same techniques for excavating ores of gems such as diamonds. Mining deposits in hard (sedimentary or igneous or metamorphic) rocks are commonly massive and hard. Mining can be done by any one of the following methods: 1) - Longwall mining; 2) - Room-and-pillar mining; 3) - Blast mining; 4) - Shortwall mining; 5) - Coal Skimming. Mining can be done by the following methods: a) - Short-hole and Long-hole mining methods; b) - Selective and unselective mining methods; c) - Supported and Unsupported underground mining methods.
