5. HOW DOES A SATELLITE WORK
-satellites have to keep
moving all the time.
-they act like mirrors to
waves and send them back
to earth.
6. WHAT ARE SATELLITES FOR?
Satellites have more than one function, we usually group them by their job or orbit
and their three main uses are:
-communications
-photography,imaging and scientific survey
-navigation
7. COMMUNICATION SATELLITES
-Communication satellite relay
radio waves from one place on
earth to another.
-These waves can carry diverse
information:from telephone calls and
internet data to TV and radio
broadcasts.
-we need these because waves
travel in a straight line but our planet
is round.
9. PHOTOGRAPHY,IMAGING AND SCIENTIFIC SURVEY
-They show us things like
disappearing rainforests or tsunami
damages.
-the way they work is pretty similar
to the previous one.
-they send images as well as
waves with information.
13. SPUTNIK I (4 October 1957)
-First artificial satellite to be launched to outer space.
-It returned to Earth after battery failures and lose the battle against gravity in
1958
14. EXPLORER I (31 January 1958)
-First American artificial satellite to be launched.
-Orbited Earth each 144 minutes.
-Its batteries ran out in May and it stopped transmitting information
-Discovered the Van Halen radiation belt.
15. SPUTNIK II (3 November 1958)
-First artificial satellite with a living thing.
-Kudryavka (Laika)
-After some technical problems, it had to descend after 162 days in orbit.
16. INTERNATIONAL SPACE STATION
-Investigation centre in Earth´s orbit.
-Administrated by international cooperation.
-Started in 1998 by a Russian module, and was later
upgraded with other spaceships that provide energy and
communication with Earth
18. INTASAT (15 November 1974)
-First Spanish satellite.
-Transported an ionospheric beacon.
19. VOYAGER 1 (5 September 1977)
-For studying the limits of our Solar System and interstellar space.
-Furthest man-made object from Earth.
-Photographed other planets and their satellites.
20. VOYAGER 2 (20 August 1977)
-Visited Uranus and Neptune.
-Carries “The Sounds of Earth”
