From my plan I have developed more of my design
within the process. Firstly the front cover has stuck to
convention. I have used the rule of thirds targeting
hotspots in my magazine. A large masthead placed at
the top following convention creating priority and a
brand. Main cover lines were added from previous
designs. I felt the magazine looked blank and would
attract more audience. I connected the main cover lines
with the focus picture making sure it was obvious I used
a different font and an inverse of colours. The colours
used were black, white , red and yellow which are
repeated through the magazine creating a brand. The
colours came traditionally from genre research and they
worked well as they contrasted. Key features can be
highlighted in the colours such as ‘100’. The photo used
formed to convention by the serious look as well as the
outfit of choice a parka coat. It also challenged
convention by the lack of dark makeup however it
suited the article title. Typical magazine features such as
the barcode were placed in blank areas as they are
expected.

Colour scheme- The same colour scheme is the typical portrayal of rock genre.
Masthead-Creates a high priority
associating and creating a brand with
the contents.
Date and Issue number-
Basics of a magazine
Main selling line- Attraction to
peoples ‘idol’. Highlights main focus of
magazine.
Mise en scene of Image- On the right is the traditional association of what a rock magazine mise-en-scene would expect of. This
Is the stereotypical rock image such as dark makeup and hair, a depressed look and a checkered shirt. In my picture I have added
A slight feel of rock with the depressed look and parka coat however Ii have adapted convention with no makeup. This is however fitting due to
the nature of the title.
Footer- Interests audience to
more artists featuring within the magazine.
Selling line-
Attract he reader and highlight
contents for magazine.
The rule of thirds have been used. Key focuses have
been used with the tradition of columns in order to
focus on sections on information. A section of the logo
has been repeated in large letters at the top repeating
the representation of a brand. This is also represented
in the colour scheme throughout. A reversal of colours
is used to allow the bold masthead to standout sticking
to the conventions of titling the page. A white
background had been used also which is conventional
in order to focus on the information. I traditionally used
a different colour and larger font in order to highlight
the page numbers and followed by short captions and
descriptions of key articles. Similar, to research I added
an advertisement in order to attract the reader. A
editors column is commonly used and I have repeated it
here. I also stuck to convention from previous research I
developed the idea of a polaroid style frame to border
off the picture using a short caption to entice the
reader into the article.

Main image. Including
brief description and bold page number
-Highlights one key article with essay access for the audience to then read.
Editorial- This is common in magazines
however the magazine in comparison does follow convention.
The background is traditionally white in order to focus
on the main photo and text. The title is conventionally
bold in large text focusing on the main feature. Above
this there is a reverse of colours in order to highlight the
word ‘exclusive’ advertising to the audience. Its in a
smaller size to focus on the title in order of priority.
Traditionally, the stand first goes below the main title
further enticing the audience into reading while
summarizing the article. A traditional drop cap appears
indicating the start of the article itself. As well as in
previous research highlighting key areas of starts of
paragraphs. A by-line sits at the bottom of the article
which is traditional of recognising the writer. I have also
added traditional features such as a page number. But
also a smaller version of the logo. This along with the
colours creates the recognition and brand. A pull quote
conventionally features upon the photo which relates
the article collaborating the pages together.

Overall I have followed convention. Rather than
developing or challenging I have simply adapted the
traditionally style to suiting my magazine. Its obvious
throughout that its targeting the audience of an
alternative style whilst focusing on creating the correct
brand representation.

Following Convention in Magazine Design

  • 1.
  • 2. From my plan I have developed more of my design within the process. Firstly the front cover has stuck to convention. I have used the rule of thirds targeting hotspots in my magazine. A large masthead placed at the top following convention creating priority and a brand. Main cover lines were added from previous designs. I felt the magazine looked blank and would attract more audience. I connected the main cover lines with the focus picture making sure it was obvious I used a different font and an inverse of colours. The colours came traditionally from genre research and they worked well as they contrasted. Key features can be highlighted in the colours such as ‘100’.
