Marketing and advertising have evolved significantly over thousands of years from early forms of branding and information sharing to modern social media. Ancient civilizations in China, Mesopotamia, and Egypt engaged in rudimentary forms of branding and messaging through artifacts. In ancient Rome, Cicero developed an early information network to distribute news and messages. The printing press was a major innovation, allowing mass distribution of information for the first time. It led to content shocks and changed how organizations communicated with audiences. Marketing and advertising continued to professionalize over subsequent centuries as capitalism and mass media developed.

in the west and 7 weeks to reach Syria in the east
When a politician made a speech, cicero could
distribute it by making copies available to his
associates, who would read it and pass it on to others
The state gazette held information about political

10. The Gutenberg Principle
๏ตThe Gutenberg principle
stated mass distribution of
information was possible
๏ตIt eventually proved to be
expensive and
institutionalized
โขGutenberg paved
a marriage
between content
and distribution
that our social
media has divided

11. The Post- Gutenberg World
๏ตBefore the printing
press, it was not possible
to distribute information
to a large number of
people
It could be captured in
books, and scrolls, but
access to info was limited
to a small elite group
The spread of knowledge
relied on word-of-mouth
๏ตThe Gutenberg principle shaped our
world, turning its attention to the
post-Gutenberg era

power will not lie in the
