Explore:
The planet EARTH is a unique planet. It is the only
planet capable of sustaining life because of the
right combination of elements, molecules and ions
that react under the right physical conditions to
make up the processes supportive to life. It has an
atmosphere that serves as a thermostat that is
necessary to regulate its surface temperature.
In the Milky Way galaxy alone, there are about 1
billion planets. However, only the earth is habitable.
Other planets may be too hot or too cold. They
may also be too big or too small. Other planets
may not have an atmosphere or a magnetic field
or may not be in an orbit at all. Fortunately, planet
earth possesses all the features and characteristics
that make it habitable for all living forms. Let us go
through with each one of earth’s characteristics.
Explain:
Let us now study the 8 planets in the solar system. Our
solar system has 8 planets that orbit the sun in order
their distance from the sun they are Mercury, Venus,
Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune.
Factors that make the earth habitable:
1. Location: Earth is the third planet in the solar
system. It is considered to be one of the inner
planets next to Venus. Its distance from the sun
is about 93 million miles and it takes about 500
seconds for sunlight to reach the earth’s
surface. This distance from the sun is enough to
support life.
Elaborate:
Summary: Earth is habitable because
1. It has the right distance from the sun.
2. It is protected from harmful solar radiation
by its magnetic field.
Deflected the harmful radiation from the sun.
3. It is kept warm by an insulating atmosphere.
4. It has the right amount of ingredients for life-
water and carbon.
Evaluation:
Post Assessment: Write only the letter of the correct
answer.
1. What makes planet earth different from the other
planets in the solar system?
a. It supports life.
b. It is mostly covered in water.
c. The atmosphere holds gases.
d. All of the above.
2. Why is the earth called the “living planet”
a. It has a life mechanism
b. It has water and atmosphere.
c. It has carbon dioxide in the atmosphere
d. It has atmosphere that supports oxygen.
3. Planet earth is considered as “ blue planet “. Which of
the following best describes the surface of planet Earth?
a. Earth has atmosphere.
b. Earth has lots of volcano.
c. Earth is covered with red dust.
d. Earth has mostly water on the surface.
4. Which of the following best describes planets earth?
a. it has gasses
b. It supports life
C. It has rocky core
d. It supports other planets
.5. Planet earth is considered uniquely different from any
other.
a. Earth is the only planet that changes
structure.
b. Earth is the only planet that turns around in
space.
c. Earth is the only planet that is mostly covered
with water.
d. Earth is the only planet that is mostly made
from rocks.
Performance Task:

Explore: The planet EARTH is a unique planet. It is the only planet capable of sustaining life because of the right combination of elements, molecules and ions that react under the right physical conditions to make up the processes supportive to life. It has an atmosphere that serves as a thermostat that is necessary to regulate its surface temperature. In the Milky Way galaxy alone, there are about 1 billion planets. However, only the earth is habitable. Other planets may be too hot or too cold. They may also be too big or too small. Other planets may not have an atmosphere or a magnetic field or may not be in an orbit at all. Fortunately, planet earth possesses all the features and characteristics that make it habitable for all living forms. Let us go through with each one of earth’s characteristics. Explain: Let us now study the 8 planets in the solar system. Our solar system has 8 planets that orbit the sun in order
  • 4. their distance from the sun they are Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. Factors that make the earth habitable: 1. Location: Earth is the third planet in the solar system. It is considered to be one of the inner planets next to Venus. Its distance from the sun is about 93 million miles and it takes about 500 seconds for sunlight to reach the earth’s surface. This distance from the sun is enough to support life.
  • 5. Elaborate: Summary: Earth is habitable because 1. It has the right distance from the sun. 2. It is protected from harmful solar radiation by its magnetic field. Deflected the harmful radiation from the sun. 3. It is kept warm by an insulating atmosphere. 4. It has the right amount of ingredients for life- water and carbon.
