Concept of Particle
A particle is a point like object endowed with mass
• All the particles of a solid body performing linear
motion cover the same distance in the same time.
Concept of Particle
• All the particles of a solid body performing linear
motion cover the same distance in the same time.
• Hence, the motion of such a body can be described in
terms of the motion of any of its constituents

• If the distance between two objects is very large as
compared to their dimensions,these objects can be
treated as particles

2-Dimensional & 3-Dimentional Motion
Motion in a Straight Line
Path Length
The total distance travelled by a particle in some time
interval is called the path length (or total distance)
Displacement
The change in position of a particle in some time interval is
called displacement
Path length is always positive while displacement can be
positive , negative or zero
