3. DEFINITION:
Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) is a
method of clinical/practical examination where pre-determined
decision is made on the competencies to be tested with the use
of checklist.
4. HISTORY:
• OSCE was developed in University of (Dundee, Scotland) in the
early 1975 by Dr. Harden & his colleagues.
• After some modification it was described in detail in 1979.
• This method was the subject of an international conference in
Ottawa in 1985 & experience were changed about OSCE.
• More than 50 countries accepted it.
• Globally using now.

• The application of knowledge rather than the recall of knowledge.
• 5minutes most common/18-20 stations maximum/2 hours for adequate reliability.
• Written answer sheets or observer assessed using checklist.
• Mixed competencies tested.
• Linked stations.
• Preparatory stations.
• Must-pass station.
• Rest station.

• Ensure integration of teaching & evaluation.
• Maintenance of student’s interest.
• Increased faculty-student interaction.
• A large no of students can be tested within a
relatively short time.
• Valid examination.
• Student satisfaction increases.

• Risk of observer fatigue.
• Requires careful organization.
• Breaking clinical skills into individual competencies is
artificial & not meaningful.
• Shortage of examiner.
