2. What is Narcissist Behavior
A need to be better
than others around
them (Chen et al., 2021).
A need for power or the
desire to obtain that
power (Chen et al., 2021).
How others respond to
the narcissistic person
[behaviors] can fluff the
narcissist's ego (Chen et
al., 2021).
Narcissists will isolate
others from friends,
loved ones, and society
(Chen et al., 2021).
Narcissists will make
themselves the
victim in a situation
(Chen et al., 2021).
Narcissist can be inflexible
to change, unemphatic,
focuses on the negative,
lack humility or decency
(Bailey & Barton, 2014).
3. Surviving a Narcissist
Family
I was raised by a single mother who fled
Mexico after my father threatened to kill my
mother. Growing up, I was used as a pawn
between my narcissistic mother and my two
older sisters (14 & 15 years older than me);
this continued until my mid-thirties. I was
told it was my fault my mother was a single
mother, and I was responsible for her leaving
her life in Mexico; I was 2yr old when we left
Mexico. When I understood I was being
shamed, I began separating myself from the
narcissist around me.

4. My Bias
Towards
Narcissists
In the past, I assumed my bias was working
with domestic violence clients because I did
not want to hear their stories repeatedly,
and they could not move forward to leave
their abuser.
When working with children, it angered me
how parents would abuse their child)ren),
allow others to harm them, deny
knowledge, or accuse their child(ren) of
making up stories. Parents believed it was
better to punish their child(ren) by having
them removed and placed in the foster care
system.
Foster parents who put their economic
needs above the needs of a child placed in
their home.
5. Continued
Knowing that my bias is toward the narcissist who dismisses others, puts them down, and
belittles others for their gain, I understand that talking with an abuser with narcissistic
traits can trigger me due to my personal experience with a narcissist. Therefore, I will
need to continue to seek supervision from my direct supervisor during my internship or
field instructor for possible countertransference and to ensure the client’s needs are met
regardless of my bias. As a social worker, I can not choose my clients; all clients deserve
to be treated with dignity and respect (NASW, 2023).
