child mortality rate?
As of June of 2017, the country
with the highest childhood
mortality rate is Somalia with
127.2 deaths of children under
age 5 per every 100,000.

3. Recommendations
● “Poverty and civil war are rampant issues in Somalia.
● Humanitarian aid is the main source of help in improving living conditions
● There is virtually no infrastructure in many parts of the country due to the ongoing civil war [which]
affects the ability of a community to access clean water (Borgen Project).”

6. Recommendations
UNICEF has listed most regions and countries into certain development regions
The ones that have higher incidences of child mortality also have lower rates of water sanitation and
infrastructure, as well as education.
North America, which was used as a comparison, has higher levels of water sanitation, infrastructure and
overall development (UNICEF), and a lower incidence of child mortality.

10. Recommendations
From 2000 to 2015, access to drinking water has increased globally, however the need for clean drinking
water still exists. Sanitation has not improved greatly and in some places has even decreased.
More federal funding for non-profit organizations that specialize in accessing countries to clean drinking
water and sanitation.
Building wells closer to communities and educating communities on proper sanitation (i.e. proper waste
disposal, and water treatment.

11. What is the relationship between adult literacy and child
mortality? Is there a significant variance for the literacy
rate of men vs. women?
Infant Mortality Rate v. Adult Literacy Rate
Data from the graph highlights the trend that as
a nation’s literacy rate increases, their infant
mortality rate decreases. This data depicts an
inverse relationship in that as one variable
increases, it’s counterpart decreases.
One recommendation to counteract this
problem can be an increase in federal funding
for foreign aids

12. Recommendations
It has been shown that the more educated a nation is the better and more developed they are. Education
opens the doors to advancements in all fields of society, in this case medical.
One way to combat this can be an increase in federal funding for nonprofits that specialize in overseas
education. Many nonprofits like BuildOn build schools and provide education to villages in developing
countries.
This will increase the average adult literacy rate of a country which has been proven to better societys
and open doors for expansion in fields for citizens.
