2. MY FIRST ATTEMPT AT COOKING
Author: LE VAN TAN
(Danang Publishing 96-97)
• I was alone in the house everyday. I felt a bit hungry. I looked in the refrigerator but could not find
anything to eat. So I decided that I would fry myself an egg, sunny side up.
• Even though I had never cooked anything before, I had watched my mother many times. I reckoned I could
manage.
• So I put the frying pan on the stove and added some oil. I waited for the oil to heat up.
• After a while nothing seemed to be happening. The oil was as cold as ever. I had forgotten to light up the
store.
• I lit the fire. When the oil seemed hot enough I cracked the egg and let the contents in the frying pan. Bits
of the shell went in too.
• When I attempted to take the fried egg out with the spatula, I could not do so. It was stuck fast to the pan.
After a few attempt the egg was in such a mess that I discovered that had cooked scrambled egg instead.
3. The value of libraries
• A good library is an ocean of information, whose boundaries continues to extend with the endless contribution of
the numerous streams of knowledge. Thus, it has a peculiar fascination for scholars, and all those whose thirst for
knowledge is insatiable.
• The usefulness of libraries in the spread of knowledges has been proved through year by year. The field of knowledge is
so extensive and life is so brief, that even the most avid reader can never expect to absorb it all. Those who have a love for
knowledge, therefore, try to master only a small fraction of it.
• Even this requires reading hundreds of books, cheap and expensive, new and old. But few people are able to buy all the books on
the subjection which they wish to attain proficiency. It is therefore necessary for them to visit a good library, where they can
read a great variety of books on the topic they love. Besides, many old but valuable books on cerntain subject are found
only in a good library. Even the original manuscript of an author, who died several years can be found in it, sometimes.
• Today, men everywhere have discovered the benefits of learning. More and more books are being written to extend human
knowledge and experience. Governments and individuals throughout the world are, there fore, opening more and more
libraries to enable people who can not afford to buy books from remote towns can still gain access to the various sources
of such wisdom. Mobile libraries serve the people in various parts of the earth.
