2. PRELIMINARY TASK
PROBLEMS
Our preliminary task, while relatively successful, had several
issues which we needed to correct. These ranged from focus
and framing issues, poor set planning and shaky camera
work to editing problems, missing sounds and poor light
matching.
However, we have learnt from this and made sure to resolve
these issues in the final product.

3. Our preliminary task had several
unmotivated cuts in it where we
hadn’t planned the shots
properly, so the final edit looked
very awkward. The gif on the top
right shows a series of cuts as
seen in the preliminary task.
However, in our final project, we
remembered this and made sure
that every cut has motivation.

from the final task.

4. At one point in our preliminary
task, there is a noticeable jump
cut where the shot we had
planned didn’t match up with the
location; the stairs shown were
immediately left of the entrance
shown, but we needed the
corridor before then so we had to
put in a jump cut.
At the end of the corridor, we also
had to cut back to the stairs,
which was another unmotivated
cut as we couldn’t show the end
of the corridor.
We learnt from this that we had to
plan our sequence around the
location better.

5. This is visible in the previous slide,
but the lighting in the first shots of
the preliminary task is inconsistent.
This is because we didn’t plan the
change in lighting between the dark
first part and lighter continuation.
This resulted in an awkward lighting
jump.
Keeping the lighting consistent was
a big concern in the final project, as
we wanted to keep the theme
consistent.

6. Our preliminary task had some
issues with framing during the last
section; when there was a close up
of a character talking, they
sometimes moved out of frame.
There was also some dead space
in these shots. This made the
shots seem poorly set up, so we
made sure that our framing in the
final project was much better and
nothing moved out of frame
unintentionally.

7. We forgot to add certain
sound effects in the
preliminary task. We had
thought that this wasn’t a
big problem, but when we
showed the preliminary task
to others, they didn’t know
what had happened without
the sound (for example,
when the character falls over
in the hall).
In the final project, we made
sure that all of the sound
effects were appropriate and
audible. We also made sure
that we proof watched the
project to ensure that
nothing is missing or wrong.
