Beyond
Cancer
My journey began in July 2010, just after my 50th birthday when I received an invitation from
the National Breast Screening Programme who now invite all women when they turn 50.
It was not a great birthday present as I was diagnosed with Breast Cancer. Coming to terms
with my diagnosis took some time, but being able to use my experience to help raise awareness
and encourage others to take up screening invites and seek help when they have concerns has
helped me.

I have shared my story on Radio
Leeds and community radio
campaigns to raise awareness
of the importance of early
diagnosis and encourage
women, in particular those
from the Black communities, to
take up their breast and cervical
screening invites.
I wasn’t informed, and wish
I had known more, about
breast awareness to enable
me to recognise any worrying
changes.

Cancer
Being less aware could mean that cancer
is diagnosed at a later stage which would
reduce the chance of successful treatment
and recovery.
Alongside two friends who were
diagnosed with breast cancer in 2010,
we set up the Beyond Cancer charity in
October 2010.
I am very proud of the difference I have
been able to make to so many people’s
lives.
By supporting them at appointments,
providing a listening ear and holding
their and their families hand at all stages
of their journey.
Beyond Cancer has been running for
five years and is going from strength to
strength.

We hold a number of
awareness and fundraising
events throughout the year
and donate
some of the funds raised to
other charities to support
research and improve
services.
Events like the May Ball,
Celebration of Life where we
celebrate the life of survivors
and remember those lost to
cancer are held annually.
We have also established a
SpecialWishes programme
granting wishes to bring a
smile to the face of those
diagnosed and their families.
