Akbar Khan has volunteered with Bradford PHAB for over 35 years and is now the chairman. PHAB aims to bring together members of the local community, including those with disabilities, to provide social, fun, and educational experiences for children and young people. It works to promote inclusion and changing attitudes towards disability by encouraging self-confidence, independence, and the development of skills in young people of all abilities. PHAB is entirely run by volunteers and provides a wide range of activities and transportation for children and young people with and without disabilities.

We have a large group of children and young people both with and without
disabilities and we provide a wide range of activities for them to access. The
participants are transported to and from the club each week. We also provide
supervision and support to the children and young people and offer a break
from everyday life with a chance to mix with and make new friends. Referrals
are received from children’s social care in Bradford and other supporting
agencies and although transport costs are the biggest cost to us, we try and
accommodate all referrals that are made to us.
We are entirely reliant upon volunteers with no paid staff. In our volunteer
team we do have qualified youth workers and teachers and most of the
volunteers have attended the club since we were children so have over 30
years of experience in supporting young people, particularly those with
additional needs.

Our volunteers include those that work, professionally, with individual
disabled children and thus understand their needs and are able to make
informed decisions to best achieve positive outcomes for them.
