Standing alongside you, we know we can accomplish our mission. Our bold vision
to save lives through screening, support those impacted by this disease and fund
research that brings forth new treatments and screening options is becoming a reality.
Together, we are bringing blue into the national spotlight.
At last count, there were more than thirty different patient advocacy groups dedicated
to colon cancer. We have accomplished a lot, but clearly not enough; the screening
rate has been stagnant for over two years.
We spent 2015 working with our colleagues at the Chris4Life Colon Cancer
Foundation, the second largest nonprofit in our community. As a result, our respective
organizations successfully merged on January 1, 2016, and we welcomed in the new
year with a new vision.
This merger allows us to reduce overhead expenses and eliminate unnecessary
costs, which will put more financial and human resources to our common mission.
We believe the new Colon Cancer Alliance can achieve exponentially more as a
merged organization.
We need you to be part of making this new vision a reality. The Colon Cancer Alliance
welcomes everyone that believes we can do more to address this unique cancer. Let’s
fund more research, expand vital services for patients, families and survivors, and help
those in need get timely screening. In October, we will unveil our new vision for the
future of colorectal cancer research, patient/family support and prevention.
We look forward to working together with you and our incredible patients, survivors,
caregivers and community in our quest to end this disease.

A LIVING LEGACY
Anne Bergersen, Stage III Survivor
Arizona Chapter Founder & Chair, 2011-2015
“When I was going through my journey, I didn’t have a Buddy. I needed someone
to talk to who was not my family, friend or co-worker. Having a Buddy would
have helped me alleviate a lot of my anxiety and depression too. It’s like having
a mentor to help you navigate an obstacle course.
I love being a Buddy now. I feel honored and blessed to answer any and all
questions! Nothing is off limits. We can talk, email or Facebook about stuff that
may be worrying them and I can share my journey. It also helps me to remain
grateful, not sweating the small stuff and giving back. Not to mention, I get to
make new friends! How lucky am I?”
Kim Hall Jackson
Stage III Survivor, Philadelphia, PA
At the age of 45, Kim Hall-Jackson spotted the usual
symptoms. Although she had no family history, she
scheduled a colonoscopy. She went through surgery,
followed by chemotherapy and radiation. Since
completing treatment, Kim has used her experience
to serve as an advocate for colon cancer awareness,
especially among African Americans.

Candace Hall
Stage IV Warrior, Buffalo, NY
After I was diagnosed with rectal cancer in 2014,
I started following the Colon Cancer Alliance and
the Undy Run/Walk on social media. That’s how
I learned there is an Undy race held right here in
Buffalo every year! I wanted to be part of bringing
awareness to colorectal cancer and support
others fighting the battle.
I have two amazing memories that stick out most at the Buffalo Undy.
First, I was able to be the Survivor Speaker at the event and share my journey
with others...I felt so honored! Secondly, I was able to meet and personally
talk with several other colorectal cancer warriors and survivors.
I believe others should get involved in the Undy Run/Walk because it really
helps bring so much awareness to colorectal cancer. Colorectal cancer is
becoming more and more common and is affecting people of both genders
and all ages. Plus, the race allows us to have fun while talking about this
disease. There are booths all over the park for people to visit, as well as
snacks, all of the teams dress up and my favorite, the giant inflatable colons!
”I wanted to be part of bringing awareness to colorectal cancer
and to support others fighting the battle I am fighting.”

12 Colon Cancer Alliance 2015 Annual Report
SPOTLIGHT: DIAGNOSED
My wife Angie was diagnosed with stage IV colon cancer at 35, less than
six months into our marriage. We were told her case was one of the most
aggressive her doctors had ever seen and absolutely terminal. Treatments
were simply going to be “extension of life” measures.
The severity of that prognosis alone might have sent most people into a
tailspin, but Angie wasn’t most people. She spent the remaining five months
of her life instilling a sense of hope in all those around her that this was
beatable, that we all still had a lifetime together. Even as the cancer started to
take its toll physically and she began to face the inevitable, Angie never lost
her desire or ability to spread hope and happiness.
Her contagious laughter, her beautiful smile and sincere concern for
the wellbeing and optimism of everyone else around her never waned.
Sometimes patients are simply beholden to unexpected responses and
miracles. And while that miracle never happened for us, I am blessed to have
experienced firsthand the bravery, strength and spirit of Angelina Thompsen
in those final months. She was every bit my caregiver as I was hers.
I wanted to find a way to help fight the disease that stole Angie away from
me and I knew it would involve the Colon Cancer Alliance after finding their
website and seeing their focus on young-onset disease. So much of my
grief and shock in losing my wife centered on her age – that she seemed
too young for colon cancer.

Cancer doesn’t care how
old you are. But we do.
Colon cancer is affecting
young people and we’re
committed to learning
more and providing
support for those
currently in their fight.
Together, we are defying
and redefining the odds.
We are changing the face
of this disease.
We refuse to let cancer
tell us who we are.

UNDER 50
”The Colon Cancer Alliance has been a
valuable outlet where I can honor my
wife, support the cause and continue
to give life to that hope she never lost
herself; that one day no one will ever
again have to hear that there aren’t any
curative measures available.”
In order to address
the rise in young-onset
cases, the Colon Cancer
Alliance founded the
Never Too Young
Coalition.
The Coalition is a group
of medical professionals,
patient advocacy
organizations, cancer
survivors and caregivers
working to educate
the public about this
growing issue.
The education I received on the subject was eye opening and made me realize
the importance of raising awareness on the community level in addition to
financial support of the cause. I initially became active in Undy events as a
way to memorialize my wife, but now my participation has additional purpose.
There truly is no such thing as too young for colon cancer, and the more that
fact is spread, the more lives that will be saved. The Colon Cancer Alliance
has been such a valuable outlet in which I can honor my wife, support the
cause and continue to give life to that hope she never lost herself; that one
day no one will ever again have to hear that there aren’t any curative measures
available.

WADE HAYES & GENENTECH
Did you know more than 18,000 African Americans are diagnosed with
colon cancer each year? Unfortunately, this community also has higher
colon cancer death rates than any other racial group.
That’s why we teamed up with the National Black Church Initiative
to launch Now is the Time – our new church-based effort that’s
all about preventing colon cancer by increasing screening rates
among African Americans. We held two events this year,
one in New Jersey and one in New York, with more
than 300 churches participating.
Congressman Donald M. Payne Jr., a nationally
recognized advocate for colon cancer prevention,
served as the Chair of the campaign.
African American

  • 5. Standing alongside you, we know we can accomplish our mission. Our bold vision to save lives through screening, support those impacted by this disease and fund research that brings forth new treatments and screening options is becoming a reality. Together, we are bringing blue into the national spotlight. At last count, there were more than thirty different patient advocacy groups dedicated to colon cancer. We have accomplished a lot, but clearly not enough; the screening rate has been stagnant for over two years. We spent 2015 working with our colleagues at the Chris4Life Colon Cancer Foundation, the second largest nonprofit in our community. As a result, our respective organizations successfully merged on January 1, 2016, and we welcomed in the new year with a new vision. This merger allows us to reduce overhead expenses and eliminate unnecessary costs, which will put more financial and human resources to our common mission. We believe the new Colon Cancer Alliance can achieve exponentially more as a merged organization. We need you to be part of making this new vision a reality. The Colon Cancer Alliance welcomes everyone that believes we can do more to address this unique cancer. Let’s fund more research, expand vital services for patients, families and survivors, and help those in need get timely screening. In October, we will unveil our new vision for the future of colorectal cancer research, patient/family support and prevention. We look forward to working together with you and our incredible patients, survivors, caregivers and community in our quest to end this disease. • 8. “When I was going through my journey, I didn’t have a Buddy. I needed someone to talk to who was not my family, friend or co-worker. Having a Buddy would have helped me alleviate a lot of my anxiety and depression too. It’s like having a mentor to help you navigate an obstacle course. I love being a Buddy now. I feel honored and blessed to answer any and all questions! Nothing is off limits. We can talk, email or Facebook about stuff that may be worrying them and I can share my journey. It also helps me to remain grateful, not sweating the small stuff and giving back. Not to mention, I get to make new friends! How lucky am I?” Kim Hall Jackson Stage III Survivor, Philadelphia, PA At the age of 45, Kim Hall-Jackson spotted the usual symptoms. Although she had no family history, she scheduled a colonoscopy. She went through surgery, followed by chemotherapy and radiation. Since completing treatment, Kim has used her experience to serve as an advocate for colon cancer awareness, especially among African Americans. 6 Colon Cancer Alliance 2015 Annual Report GIVING BACK:

  • 12. 10 Colon Cancer Alliance 2015 Annual Report Candace Hall Stage IV Warrior, Buffalo, NY After I was diagnosed with rectal cancer in 2014, I started following the Colon Cancer Alliance and the Undy Run/Walk on social media. That’s how I learned there is an Undy race held right here in Buffalo every year! I wanted to be part of bringing awareness to colorectal cancer and support others fighting the battle. I have two amazing memories that stick out most at the Buffalo Undy. First, I was able to be the Survivor Speaker at the event and share my journey with others...I felt so honored! Secondly, I was able to meet and personally talk with several other colorectal cancer warriors and survivors. I believe others should get involved in the Undy Run/Walk because it really helps bring so much awareness to colorectal cancer. Colorectal cancer is becoming more and more common and is affecting people of both genders and all ages. Plus, the race allows us to have fun while talking about this disease. There are booths all over the park for people to visit, as well as snacks, all of the teams dress up and my favorite, the giant inflatable colons! ”I wanted to be part of bringing awareness to colorectal cancer and to support others fighting the battle I am fighting.” THE UNDY RUN/WALK: IT’S PERSONAL

  • 14. 12 Colon Cancer Alliance 2015 Annual Report SPOTLIGHT: DIAGNOSED My wife Angie was diagnosed with stage IV colon cancer at 35, less than six months into our marriage. We were told her case was one of the most aggressive her doctors had ever seen and absolutely terminal. Treatments were simply going to be “extension of life” measures. The severity of that prognosis alone might have sent most people into a tailspin, but Angie wasn’t most people. She spent the remaining five months of her life instilling a sense of hope in all those around her that this was beatable, that we all still had a lifetime together. Even as the cancer started to take its toll physically and she began to face the inevitable, Angie never lost her desire or ability to spread hope and happiness. Her contagious laughter, her beautiful smile and sincere concern for the wellbeing and optimism of everyone else around her never waned. Sometimes patients are simply beholden to unexpected responses and miracles. And while that miracle never happened for us, I am blessed to have experienced firsthand the bravery, strength and spirit of Angelina Thompsen in those final months. She was every bit my caregiver as I was hers. I wanted to find a way to help fight the disease that stole Angie away from me and I knew it would involve the Colon Cancer Alliance after finding their website and seeing their focus on young-onset disease. So much of my grief and shock in losing my wife centered on her age – that she seemed too young for colon cancer. Brandon Thompsen Caregiver, Undy Run/Walk Local Engagement Committee Member, Chicago, IL Cancer doesn’t care how old you are. But we do. Colon cancer is affecting young people and we’re committed to learning more and providing support for those currently in their fight. Together, we are defying and redefining the odds. We are changing the face of this disease. We refuse to let cancer tell us who we are. W E A R E
  • 15. Colon Cancer Alliance 2015 Annual Report 13 UNDER 50 ”The Colon Cancer Alliance has been a valuable outlet where I can honor my wife, support the cause and continue to give life to that hope she never lost herself; that one day no one will ever again have to hear that there aren’t any curative measures available.” In order to address the rise in young-onset cases, the Colon Cancer Alliance founded the Never Too Young Coalition. The Coalition is a group of medical professionals, patient advocacy organizations, cancer survivors and caregivers working to educate the public about this growing issue. The education I received on the subject was eye opening and made me realize the importance of raising awareness on the community level in addition to financial support of the cause. I initially became active in Undy events as a way to memorialize my wife, but now my participation has additional purpose. There truly is no such thing as too young for colon cancer, and the more that fact is spread, the more lives that will be saved. The Colon Cancer Alliance has been such a valuable outlet in which I can honor my wife, support the cause and continue to give life to that hope she never lost herself; that one day no one will ever again have to hear that there aren’t any curative measures available. Fund young-onset research and take action at ccalliance.org/young-and-brave. WHAT CAN YOU DO?

  • 19. We were proud to partner this year with Genentech and country music artist and survivor Wade Hayes to support patients in need. For every download, Genentech donated $1 to our Blue Hope Financial Assistance program. Thanks to this initiative, we raised $50,000. In honor of their support, we awarded Genentech with our Go Live Your Life award at our National Conference in Phoenix, Arizona. Go Live Your Life: WADE HAYES & GENENTECH Did you know more than 18,000 African Americans are diagnosed with colon cancer each year? Unfortunately, this community also has higher colon cancer death rates than any other racial group. That’s why we teamed up with the National Black Church Initiative to launch Now is the Time – our new church-based effort that’s all about preventing colon cancer by increasing screening rates among African Americans. We held two events this year, one in New Jersey and one in New York, with more than 300 churches participating. Congressman Donald M. Payne Jr., a nationally recognized advocate for colon cancer prevention, served as the Chair of the campaign. African American Outreach Now Is The Time in Brooklyn was made possible by a grant from the Colon Cancer Coalition through money raised at Get Your Rear in Gear - New York.
