Identify the place value and value of the selected
digit.
Let’s have
an
activity!
LEARNING COMPETENCIES

numbers up to 1 000 000.
C.2 The learner orders numbers
up to 100 000 in increasing or
decreasing order.

LESSON 02
Ordering and
Comparing Numbers
COMPARING
NUMBERS
COMPARING NUMBERS
We use the relation symbols “greater
than” (>), “less than” (<), and “equal
to” (=) to compare numbers.
To compare whole numbers,
look first at the digits in
the highest place values. If
these digits are equal, then
compare the next digits.
EXAMPLES
● Let us compare the two given numbers.
1 325 ___________ 1 487
● Compare the digits in the thousands place.
Since the digits in the thousands place are
same, go to the next digits. Compare the
digits in the hundreds place.
Since 3 is smaller than 4, then 1
487 is greater than 1 325. In
symbols, we write: 1 487 > 1325. We
can also say that 1 325 is less than
1 487 or 1 325 < 1 487.
ORDERING
NUMBERS
ORDERING NUMBERS
● To arrange whole numbers either
from the least to greatest or vice
versa, compare them. Always start the
comparison of whole numbers from
the highest place value.
Example:
● It is easy to arrange or order number if there is mastery in
comparing numbers. In the given, the grades of the five
students are: 92, 99, 95, 91, and 90.
● All the tens digits are 9, so compare the ones digits. Since we
are looking are looking for the student who got the top
position, then the arrangement of the numbers should be
from the greatest to the least. The highest ones digits is 9
and the smallest ones digit is 0. Therefore, the arrangement
of numbers from the greatest to the least should be 99, 95,
92, 91, and 90.
Other examples:
From least to greatest:
935 942 904 964
Answer: 904 935 942 964
8 356 3 657 9 326 5 674
Answer: 3 657 5 674 8 356 9 326
From greatest to least:
8 356 8 394 8 636 8 953
Answer: 89 964 89 534 89 467 89 246
89 534 89 467 89 964 89 246
Answer: 89 964 89 534 89 467 89 246
ORDERING NUMBERS
Ordering numbers mean
arrangement of numbers
either from small to big or
from big to small
Della, Victoria, Rachel and Monica are three friends, their
heights are (159 cm), (172 cm), (169 cm) and (168 cm)
respectively. Can you tell which one is the smallest and
which is the tallest?
In order to decide who the tallest girl is, we will have
to arrange their heights in a particular order. So,
Della (159 cm), Monica (168cm), Rachel (169cm)
and Victoria (172cm), with this we get that Della is
the shortest. Now, we will find out who is the
tallest, by arranging the heights in decreasing
order – Victoria (172 cm), Rachel (169 cm), Monica
(168 cm) and Della (159 cm) with this we can get
that Victoria is the tallest girl.
When we arrange the numbers in an
increasing order, it is known
as Ascending Order, and when the
words are arranged in a decreasing
order, and then they are known
as Descending Order.
• For ascending check the smallest
number from the given list and place it
first and then put the numbers
according to the increasing order.
• For descending check the biggest
number from the given list and place it
first and then put the numbers
according to the decreasing order.
