The Pilgrimage
Text: Heb 11:8-10
8 By faith Abraham, when he was called to go out into a
place which he should after receive for an inheritance,
obeyed; and he went out, not knowing whither he went.
9 By faith he sojourned in the land of promise, as in a
strange country, dwelling in tabernacles with Isaac and
Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise:
10 For he looked for a city which hath foundations, whose
builder and maker is God.
This is the testimony of all the O.T. saints.
Heb 11:13 These all died in faith, not having received
the promises, but having seen them afar off, and were
persuaded of them, and embraced them, and
confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims
on the earth.
Heb 11:14 For they that say such things declare
plainly that they seek a country.
David
Ps 39:12 Hear my prayer, O LORD, and give ear
unto my cry; hold not thy peace at my tears: for I
am a stranger with thee, and a sojourner, as all
my fathers were.
Ps 119:54 Thy statutes have been my songs in
the house of my pilgrimage.
Peter
1Pet 2:11 Dearly beloved, I beseech you as
strangers and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly
lusts, which war against the soul;
2Cor 5:5-9 5 Now he that hath
wrought us for the selfsame thing is
God, who also hath given unto us the
earnest of the Spirit.
6 Therefore we are always confident,
knowing that, whilst we are at home in
the body, we are absent from the Lord:
7 (For we walk by faith, not by sight:)
8 We are confident, I say, and willing
rather to be absent from the body, and
to be present with the Lord.
9 Wherefore we labour, that, whether
present or absent, we may be accepted
of him.
I. The Proposal-
when he was called to go out… obeyed…
Start
…when he was called to go out… obeyed…
He could have disobeyed. It was his choice to obey
God’s call or not.
John 12:32 And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will
draw all men unto me.
He had to see his need, to leave.
Luke 15:16-18 16 And he would fain have filled his
belly with the husks that the swine did eat: and no
man gave unto him.
17 And when he came to himself, he said, How many
hired servants of my father's have bread enough and
to spare, and I perish with hunger!
18 I will arise and go to my father, and will say unto
him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and before
thee,
Ps 25:11-12 11 For thy name's sake, O LORD, pardon
mine iniquity; for it is great.
12 What man is he that feareth the LORD? him shall
he teach in the way that he shall choose.
Matt 3:6 And were baptized of him in Jordan,
confessing their sins.
1John 1:8-10 8 If we say that we have no sin, we
deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to
forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all
unrighteousness.
10 If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a
liar, and his word is not in us.
Eph 2:1 And you hath he quickened, who were dead
in trespasses and sins;
A ‘Christianity’ that makes you comfortable in your
sin is not of Christ.
The word “sin” or any derivativeof the word is used 839 times
in the Bible, in 53 books. You can’t read God’s word with out
knowing man’s problem is “sin”.
II. The Prize-
…he looked for a city…
10 For he looked for a city which hath foundations, whose
builder and maker is God.
8 … a place which he should after receive for an
inheritance…
He had never been there; but he had Faith in the
GPS- God’s Plan in Scripture.
By faith… not knowing whither he went.
Heb 11:15 And truly, if they had been mindful of that
country from whence they came out, they might have
had opportunity to have returned.
Rom 8:29 For whom he did foreknow, he also did
predestinate to be conformed to the image of his
Son, that he might be the firstborn among many
brethren.
Eph 1:4 According as he hath chosen us in him
before the foundation of the world, that we should
be holy and without blame before him in love:
Eph 4:24 And that ye put on the new man, which
after God is created in righteousness and true
holiness.
John 14:2-3 2 In my Father's house are many
mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go
to prepare a place for you.
3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come
again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am,
there ye may be also.

Heb 11:9-10 9 By faith he sojourned in the land of

with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same
promise:
10 For he looked for a city which hath foundations,

Navigation- by faith
10 For he looked for…
Matt 10:38 And he that taketh not his cross, and
followeth after me, is not worthy of me.
Luke 8:14 And that which fell among thorns are they,
which, when they have heard, go forth, and are
choked with cares and riches and pleasures of this life,
and bring no fruit to perfection.
2Cor 4:18 While we look not at the things which are
seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the
things which are seen are temporal; but the things
which are not seen are eternal.
2Cor 7:1 Having therefore these promises, dearly
beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of
the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of
God.
Eph 4:22 That ye put off concerning the former
conversation the old man, which is corrupt according
to the deceitful lusts;
Phil 2:16 Holding forth the word of life; that I may
rejoice in the day of Christ, that I have not run in vain,
neither laboured in vain.
Col 1:10-12 10 That ye might walk worthy of the
Lord unto all pleasing, being fruitful in every good
work, and increasing in the knowledge of God;
11 Strengthened with all might, according to his
glorious power, unto all patience and longsuffering
with joyfulness;
12 Giving thanks unto the Father, which hath made us
meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints
in light:
Heb 12:1-2 1 Wherefore seeing we also are
compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses,
let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth
so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the
race that is set before us,
2 Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our
faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured
the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the
right hand of the throne of God.
Heb 12:15 Looking diligently lest any man fail of the
grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up
trouble you, and thereby many be defiled;
2Pet 3:13 Nevertheless we, according to his promise,
look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein
dwelleth righteousness.
2Pet 3:14 Wherefore, beloved, seeing that ye look for
such things, be diligent that ye may be found of him
in peace, without spot, and blameless.
