3. WITH WORSHIP
1 Corinthians 11:17-19 (ESV)
17 But in the following instructions I do not
commend you, because when you come
together it is not for the better but for the worse.
18 For, in the first place, when you come
together as a church, I hear that there are
divisions among you. And I believe it in part, 19
for there must be factions among you in order
that those who are genuine among you may be
recognized.
4. WITH WORSHIP
1 Corinthians 11:20-22 (ESV)
20 When you come together, it is not the Lord's
supper that you eat. 21 For in eating, each one
goes ahead with his own meal. One goes
hungry, another gets drunk. 22 What! Do you not
have houses to eat and drink in? Or do you
despise the church of God and humiliate those
who have nothing? What shall I say to you?
Shall I commend you in this? No, I will not.
5. 1 Corinthians 11:23-24 (ESV)
23 For I received from the Lord what I also
delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus on the
night when he was betrayed took bread, 24
and when he had given thanks, he broke it,
and said, “This is my body which is for you. Do
this in remembrance of me.”
WITH REMEMBRANCE
6. 1 Corinthians 11:25-26 (ESV)
25 In the same way also he took the cup, after
supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant
in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it,
in remembrance of me.” 26 For as often as
you eat this bread and drink the cup, you
proclaim the Lord's death until he comes.

7. WITH EXAMINATION
1 Corinthians 11:27-29 (ESV)
27 Whoever, therefore, eats the bread or
drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy
manner will be guilty concerning the body and
blood of the Lord. 28 Let a person examine
himself, then, and so eat of the bread and
drink of the cup. 29 For anyone who eats and
drinks without discerning the body eats and
drinks judgment on himself.
8. REMEMBERING THE SACRIFICE: BELIEVERS ARE TO
APPROACH REMEMBRANCE OF JESUS’ DEATH WITH
REVERENCE AND UNITY
1 CORINTHIANS 11:17-29
9. 1 Corinthians 11:2-34
Theme for 1 Corinthians:
Define the problem
Answer the problem with the Gospel
What is the chief end of man?
Glorify God
Enjoy Him forever
CONTEXT
10. 1 Corinthians 11:2-34
Paul begins the letter by rebuking the BELIEVERS about
divisions and immortality: “Corinthianizing”the Gospel.
Then he answers questions they have about marriage,
food offered to idols.
Enters Chapter 11 by answer two questions, the first was
about head covering in Church.
The second question deals with the right way for
believers to remember Jesus’ sacrifice through the Lord’s
Supper.

12. IF PAUL CAME TO CHURCH TODAY,
WHAT SECTION WOULD HE PUT YOU
IN?
WORSHIPER IDOLATOR
THERE HAS TO BE DIVISION FOR
GLORY TO BE GIVEN.

19. “The critical question for our generation—and for
every generation—is this: If you could have heaven,
with no sickness, and with all the friends you ever
had on earth, and all the food you ever liked, and all
the leisure activities you ever enjoyed, and all the
natural beauties you ever saw, all the physical
pleasures you ever tasted, and no human conflict or
any natural disasters, could you be satisfied with
heaven, if Christ was not there?”

Editor's Notes
What is the Gospel?
Jesus Christ is the son of God, He is God.
He died for our sins on the Cross and through His grace we are saved.
He conquered death.
He will come again.
We are to approach the Lord’s supper with reverence and unity because it gives God glory.
The world is going to take Jesus as seriously as we do simple as that…
Love this…again, everything in the Bible is about compare and contrast, goats and sheep…
God doesn’t get glory without some sort of comparison…
Worshiper: Does his/her job by giving glory to God.
Idolator: gives glory to the things of God.
You can worship God in all that you do and the premise here is that what you do in Church is just the outflow of what you do the other 22 hours of your life.
This is the only time in the NT that it is referred to as the Lord’s supper.
This is a big deal, the “Lord’s Super”…if you cannot get this right, how are you living the rest of the time?
Potluck dinner at the time and there were again, deep divisions here which is sad…
What are they giving glory to when they act like this?
Why do you think everyone around us wants our stuff instead of the God we say we know? We give more credit to the stuff than we do to God…
This is a big deal because Paul is answering the problem with the Gospel…
“This is my body. Although Christian thinkers through the centuries have argued about the precise meaning of these words, it’s best to understand Jesus as saying, “This bread means My body” or “This bread represents My body.” His actual, physical body was at that moment still present with the disciples in the room of the last supper.
Which is for you. There was a purpose for His suffering and death. He died on behalf of others. His suffering atoned for the sins of those who place their trust in Him.
Do this … in remembrance of me. Our Lord ordained that His followers are to remember His death by eating the bread and drinking the cup. Jesus instituted this observance at a Passover meal, which commemorated the Israelites’ exodus (Ex. 12:14-27).”
Excerpt From: Clint Pressley & Mike Livingstone. “Explore the Bible: Adult Leader Guide - ESV.”
Here Paul is finishing the Gospel, because it doesn’t stop with Jesus’ death…Jesus conquered death and will come again…
That is what we are doing with the Lord’s super…remembering the Gospel, remember the lens with which we should look at things…
