1. 1. “ Do this in remembrance of me.” Celebrating our Salvation in Communion with our Savior
 2. 2. The Lord’s Supper

The “Lord’s Supper” is a form of worship in which believers observe Jesus’ command to remember and reflect upon His life, His death, His resurrection, and His return.

It is also called “ Communion ,” because we “commune” or interact on a deeper level with our Lord.

 3. 3. The Lord’s Supper

Celebrating communion is a “perpetual” or on-going command :

Jesus specifically instructed His followers to participate in communion as a memorial to Him.

We are to continue celebrating communion until His return. (1 Corinthians 11:26)

We are also instructed by the Apostle Paul to reflect inward BEFORE we participate in communion.

 4. 4. The Lord’s Supper

28 But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of the bread and drink of the cup. 29 For he who eats and drinks in an unworthy manner eats and drinks judgment to himself, not discerning the Lord's body. 30 For this reason many are weak and sick among you, and many sleep. 31 For if we would judge ourselves, we would not be judged.

1 Corinthians 11:28, NKJ

 5. 5. The Lord’s Supper

Let’s look specifically at the initiation of communion, and the command of Jesus.

19 And when He had taken some bread and given thanks, He broke it and gave it to them, saying, "This is My body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of Me ." 20 And in the same way He took the cup after they had eaten, saying, "This cup which is poured out for you is the new covenant in My blood.

(Luke 22:19-20)

 6. 6. Do This . . .

Break the bread :

The “bread” is a representation of Jesus’ body.

During His life, Jesus was the indwelling of God in human flesh. He experienced life as we experience it ourselves, yet without sin.

In His death, Jesus became the symbol by which we receive salvation . . .

 7. 7. Do This . . .

14 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up: 15 That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life. 16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. (John 3:14-16 NKJ)

 8. 9. Do This . . .

Drink the Wine

The wine represents the “ blood ” of Jesus which was spilled out for “atonement” or payment of our sins.

Matthew 26:29 calls this “new wine;” the fresh juice that has not yet fermented.

 9. 10. In Remembrance . . .

The Passover was a celebration of remembrance about that night in Egypt when the Angel of Death passed over the homes of all who had sacrificed a lamb and painted its blood on the door posts and lintel of their home in accordance to God’s instructions.

 10. 11. In Remembrance . . .

Remembering what Christ has done:

Jesus intentionally initiated the ordinance of communion following a Passover meal.

Jesus blood was shed for us so that God would pass over our sin!

 11. 12. In Remembrance . . .

Reflecting on what Christ will do:

Jesus gave us instruction to continue observing communion until His return:

He IS returning for us!

He has prepared a place for us!

 12. 13. Of me.

Savior : It’s not only important to reflect upon what we do and why we do it, but also and most importantly the “ who .”

Partaking in communion allows us to reflect upon who Jesus is.

Just as a spotless lamb was sacrificed for the salvation and freedom from bondage of the Hebrews in Egypt, so the spotless Lamb of God (Jesus) was sacrificed to free us from the bondage of sin.

It is Jesus who has saved us!

 13. 14. Of me.

Lord:

Jesus is also Lord: He gave the disciples guidance and direction during His ministry, and continues to give us guidance and direction today through His Spirit.

 14. 15. Preparing for Communion

We must listen to the Holy Spirit and judge ourselves: Are we right before God?

We must ask God to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. (Psalm 51).

We will spend a moment in prayer and confession as we reflect upon what Jesus has done for us, and why He died for us.

 15. 16. Responsive Reading #694

The Son of Man is come to seek that which was lost.

Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is no other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.

 16. 17. Responsive Reading #694

Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief.

I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that He is able to keep that which I have committed unto Him against that day.

 17. 18. Responsive Reading #694

Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy lovingkindness: According unto the multitude of thy tender mercies, blot out my transgressions.

Wash me thoroughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin. For I acknowledge my transgressions: and my sin is ever before me.

 18. 19. Responsive Reading #694

Against thee and thee only have I sinned, and done this evil in thy sight.

Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean: Wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.

 19. 20. Responsive Reading #694

Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. Cast me not away from thy presence; and take not thy Holy Spirit from me. Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me with thy free spirit. Then will I teach transgressors thy ways; and sinners shall be converted unto thee.

 20. 21.

Lord Jesus I long

to be perfectly whole,

I want thee forever

to ransom my soul;

Break down every idol,

cast out every foe,

Now wash me, and I shall be

Whiter than snow.

 21. 22.

Whiter than snow,

Yes, whiter than snow;

Now wash me and I shall be,

Whiter than snow.

 22. 23.

Lord Jesus for this,

I most humbly entreat;

I wait blessed Lord,

At thy crucified feet;

By faith for my cleansing,

I see thy blood flow:

Now wash me, and I shall be

Whiter than snow.
