Cindy Sherman28
Cindy Sherman is said to be one of the most
respected photographers of the 20th century.
She is known for conceptual portraits and for
placing herself not only behind the camera but
also in front of it. Sherman has been her own
model for the last 30 years in her photographs.
Even though the pictures are of Sherman her-
self, they aren’t meant to be self-portraits. The
pictures are supposed to represent the roles of a
woman in society. People question if Sherman’s
pictures are supposed to represent feminism or
if Sherman is feminist. Sherman just wanted to
provide images without a theory. She wanted her
photography to be something everyone could
relate to without having to search for a theory.
Sherman was never interested in art until
college. When young she always thought of
art as people drawing characters at the mall.
Sherman was born in Glen Ridge, New Jer-
sey in 1954, but grew up in Huntington, Long
social roles or personas. She also did a “Disas-
ter and Fairy Tale,” where she used dolls and
mannequins as her models instead of herself.
Sherman didn’t usually take photographs for
magazines but when she became stuck in a proj-
ect or bored she would sometimes do magazine
projects. Sherman has shot photos for Interview
Magazine, French Vogue, Marc Jacobs, and has
been a model for M.A.C. makeup. She was also

1999, Sherman’s portraits average selling price

lege she started taking painting
classes. Sherman then came to a
point where she saw nothing else
she could do with painting. She
decided to start putting her time in
photography instead. After gradu-
ating in 1976, she then moved to
New York to focus on her art career.
A year after Sherman graduated
college she started photographing

man was her own model in all of
these images. In each photograph
Sherman would dress up differ-
ently and change her wig. The im-
ages would show Sherman in

known for having some of the most expensive photographs ever sold.
Although Sherman has been a very successful artist, people
still wonder who is Cindy Sherman? In her images she always photo-
graphed herself but she was in disguises and role-playing. Although
everyone considers Sherman’s art to be feminist Sherman herself
does not. Since the public is unsure who Sherman people never know
what to expect next out of Sherman. She’s currently still living in New

town called Boerne. She’s currently studying at the Universtiy of
once aspired to be a photographer like Cindy Sherman, but has
recently decided to follow a different new path with her life.
