Beinga school magazine andhavinga targetaudience of students,mymagazine neededtoconsist
of a backgroundphotothat wasnot onlyappropriate foradults(if theywishedtoview it) but
appealedtostudents andstoodoutto them.The structure of mymagazine coverisreasonably
simplisticandcouldbe consideredalmosttraditional.Itcontainsabackgroundimage of two sixth
formstudentsstandinginfrontof the canon ParsonsBuilding(6th
formbuilding),amastheadsaying
“EDUPLUS” (a combinationof the twowordseducationandplus,suggestingtoitsviewersthatitisa
magazine thatismeantto boost/improve youreducationaswell asmore informationotherthan
justyour education) atthe top,the mainstoriesthat will be involvedlisteddownthe leftandside of
the cover page (inyellowtostandout),the mainstoryof the week“thisweek’stoptipsformaths”
(inblackand largerthan the restof the storiestoindicate thatit isthe main feature) and finallythe
Finchleycatholicschool logointhe bottomrighthandcornerto show that it isa magazine aimedat
thisspecificschool.
The target audience forthismagazine wasthe studentswhoattendFinchleycatholic,notnecessarily
for teachers/parents/adults.Thismeantthatmyresearchhad to be strictlylimitedtoeventsinthe
medianowthat wouldaffectstudents,andthe thingsthatwouldinterestthemmost(meaningthat
it isunlikelythattheywouldlike toreadaboutlastyear’sexamresults,orhow to helpyourchild
duringexamsperiods;theywouldratherknow how tohelpthemselves).Tostartmy research,firstly
I lookedatalreadyexistingschool magazinesandthe mastheadstheyused(sothatIwasn’tcopying
them),then Ilookedatthe typesof issuesthatteenagerswere facingnow onan everydaybasis (for
example thingslike depressionaffectingschool work,andlacksleepreducingthe qualityof ourwork
were twomainissuesthatif foundamongstudentsnow meaningthatIincludedtheminmy
