FIRST CHAPTER of “English
for Primary Teachers”STUDY some useful instructions for
us as future English teachers
ACQUIRE some skills in order to
manage an English classroom in
Primary Education
GUIDE with general tips that an English
instructor should take into account to run
a class properly.
Attractive and interactive
lessons
Involve the pupils in the
learning process
Enjoy English
AIMS:
MOTHER TONGUE
Teachers should follow the same
process to teach the second language
How do they acquire the mother tongue?
- Hear voices and sounds.
- Respond to the voices of
their mother or father.
- Play with sounds and
practise making them.
- Associate the sounds with
what they can see and
understand.
- Start to use language to
interact with others.
- Say what they hear
others saying.
- Pick up accent of
those around them.
Babies Young children
CARETAKER TALK What is it?
What does it consist in?
It is the language that adults use to
address their young children to acquire
the mother tongue. It means, the way
adults modify their speech when
communicating with kids.
 Repetition of phrases that you said
earlier or paraphrasing.
 Asking questions to keep children
attention.
 Having positive attitude with
children’s mistakes.
 Completing what they say.
How to use caretaker talk in
class?
 They need to listen a lot of English
 Look on you (the teacher) as their
new carer.
 -Listen to you and try to make sense
of what you say.
TEACHING TIPS  Introduce English with enjoyable activities.
 Use English in class to communicate all the time, except to
give instructions they don’t understand.
 Use gestures, facial expressions, movements and actions
to help them to understand.
 Use drawing, pictures, images or photos to support the
explanations.
 Use a puppet if they are very young learners.
 Let children talk in their mother tongue if they don’t know
how to explain themselves. Teacher will translate into
English what they say.
 Tell students about your own personal experiences, for
example what you like or dislike.
 Students won’t say everything perfectly, so encourage them
by responding positively. Help them to feel secure.
Get familiar with the new teacher
from the beginning of the course.
Digital presentations done by the teacher
showing her/his interests.
Don’t be afraid afraid of talking to the
teacher.
Consider the teacher as an equal and not
as a higher position.
Pupils can design their own persentations too and
let the rest of the class know them a bit deeper.
WAYS OF STARTING A LESSON
Will depend on the
kind of teacher
A CLASS TEACHER
A SPECIALIST TEACHER
• Teaches every subject including English
• Has to do something attractive to let students
know that English class has started.
• Examples: wear something special (hat), starting
with song, go to a different classroom, show a
picture or a toy…
• Only teaches English.
• Usually works in different classes with different
levels and ages.
• Here the change of subject is clearer for the
students but it’s also important to plan something
to begin the lesson,
• Examples: use a chart to check attendance, prepare
a routine that the children like: songs rhymes…
IN GENERAL…
Eye-catching ways
to start a lesson:






GREETING AND
ADDRESSING
We can find some different ways for
children to address the teacher:
:



It would be convenient that
teachers let know the students
how does he/she wants to be
called from the beginning of the
course
The teacher has to think about the
arrangement of the classroom.
This arrangement has to be connected
with the methodology that is going to
be developed
:
Decorate the classrooms walls hanging on
images, flashcards or posters with useful
sentences or expressions such as: “Can I go
to the toilet, please?, How can I say this in
English?, Can you close the window, please?
ANOTHER IDEA:
The teacher has to take into account what
are the students going to do after this
class in order to prepare them for the
following activity.
Some minutes before
the time to finish
SOE EXPRESSIONS
• Keep up all your things, children!
• Everybody, line up quietly by the door.
• Do not run in the corridor, please.
• Have a good afternoon. See you tomorrow!
It’s important that the teacher evaluate
his/her work as an instructor with the aim
of improving his/her teaching methods
