Challenges, Benefits and Opportunities
Accommodation Services, La Trobe is one of the largest University owned and managed accommodation sites in Australia.
Approximately 2200 Beds across our 2 Main Campuses
Additional 200 regional/placement beds also available
Properties include traditional residential colleges, apartments and housing for graduate and mature aged students.
First established in 2006, Accommodation Services emerged following the amalgamation of what was then formerly individually operated residential colleges across the University.
Six years on, in 2012, it was clear however, that the organisational structure in place had grown organically over time, leaving a significant variation between position descriptions and actual practice, with an opportunity to review and subsequently implement changes to better reflect current and future needs at the time.
Additionally, amongst the team, and led by senior management, there was also a motivation and aspiration towards raising the profile of Accommodation Services, highlighting our contribution to the university and the ‘student experience,’ and ultimately emerging as an example of best practice in the student housing industry.
Whilst all facets of Accommodation Services formed part of the overarching change process that then took place, our approach to student development and support emerged as a particular focus and area of growth, and a thorough review of operations at this time highlighted several key opportunities for enhancement:
The first, was a terminology shift from ‘Residential Life’ to ‘Residential Education’
The second major change involved rethinking the after-hours space, with the introduction of an around the clock trained Night Manager team
The final significant change was a fresh take on the traditional Head of College/Residential Supervisor role
Critical to all of the above, was a round-the-clock cross-campus approach - shifting from individual staff members taking responsibility for a specific residence, including everything from student leadership, programing and discipline, to a team of staff during and after hours with specialist skills and expertise, providing a consistent and equivalent quality of experience for all those in residence, regardless of location.
Launched in 2012, the portfolios of Academic Excellence, Health and Wellbeing, Social Engagement and Community Standards now form the pillars of our Residential Education programs – driving enhanced student enrichment and engagement, improved academic outcomes and retention rates in our student cohort, and an enhanced 24-7 approach to customer service across the residential precinct.
ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE
The provision of peer-led and staff supported academic support beyond that which is offered by the University is a long-held practice for students living on residence at La Trobe.
First Year Mentoring

NET Academic Support Program:
The overall health and wellbeing of our residents is also extremely important and selected student leaders, supported by one of our Residential Education staff, facilitate a range of wellness activities, targeted at supporting resident wellbeing throughout the course of the year.
Focus revolves around six dimensions of wellness including
Healthy Relationships
Mental Health
Personal Responsibility
Financial Fitness
Physical Wellbeing
Choose Your Own Adventure
Activities, are again, student-run and led, and have included cooking classes, guest speaker nights, budgeting sessions and external excursions. Our Choose Your Own Adventure category, allows our residents to collectively pick a topic or theme of their own, and many have chosen 30 day health eating challenges or community initiatives like blood drives or volunteering with soup vans and the like.
Ensuring residents are provided with a diverse range of social, sporting and cultural activities and programs throughout the time on residence is also a key, and perhaps the most widely recognized, element of residential life. Accommodation Services recruits students within the residences to take responsibility for organising a range of creative, inclusive and engaging events designed to meet the needs of the diverse demographic of students who live on site. Events and activities fall under four key areas:
Orientation and Transition
Sports
Social and Culture,
Community Outreach
A team member within Residential Education additionally organises three other areas of social programming including our:
Thursday Night Live program
Outbound Program
International student support
Our final pillar, Community Standards, has resulted in some of the most significant changes in our approach to discipline and community education. The most notable impact has been our ability to provide a consistent, transparent and education based response to issues arising from violations of our rules of residence, due to the allocation of this responsibility to one team member at each site (who I will note look nothing like the picture on this slide!)
Their role is to review all incidents which have occurred within the residential precinct, providing support and guidance with the aid of other Res Ed team members (most notably our Health and Wellbeing Coordinator) and applying sanctions as appropriate.
Equal importance is also allocated to the proactive promotion and education of residents on community issues, particularly in relation to lock outs, responsible alcohol consumption and cleaning/damage within the residential precinct.
