- Greece is a peninsula, which means that it is
surrounded onthree sidesby water.
- In the ancient world that grew up around the
Mediterranean Sea, the Greeks became known as great
sailors. They sailed about the Mediterranean, setting
up coloniesandoutposts.

• It is thelargestand the most important
island.

- It almostdividedthe country into two.
CRETE
The cities in Greece were thriving. The soil was
mostly fertile. The Greeks had a wealth of
seafood, fresh fish, a wealth of vegetables, and
fresh drinking water. The Greeks were very
happy withtheirland.
Greece has a rugged terrainand only a
quarter can be farmed.
- Early Greeks were herders
and farmers.
-Olive trees and grapevines grew intheir land.
- But as the population increase, the limited
amount of land forced many Greeks to turn to
FISHINGandTRADING.
-The mountains limited the
transportationand communication
and madethe country difficultto
unite. As a result,the Greekswere
frequentlyat war with one another.

- It was flourished in Crete.
- It was named after MINOS, a legendary
Cretan King.
-Minoans are great trading power in the
Eastern Mediterranean.
-The Minoans exchanged olive oil, honey,
and wine for gold, precious stones, grain,
and linen.

-A king ruled the prosperous cities of Crete from
his palace-city at Knossos.
Sir Arthur Evans – A british archaeologist who
excavated the site of the place in 1898, he
discoveredthat thepalace has 800 rooms.

worship of the bull and a mother goddess.
Reasons for its end
-It grew weak
-Crete was invaded by people from the Greek
mainland.
-Knossos himself was destroyed maybe by an
earthquake orvolcanic eruption.

under the leadership of the
king of Mycenae to attack
Troy, a rival power. Troy
then controlled trade routes
between the Aegean and
the black sea. After a long

by a blind Greek poet,

on the mainland,each rule by a warrior king .
• The Achaean built on the achievement on Minoan
civilization. Artisan at Mycenae reproduced Minoan designs
on jewelry, pottery, and tools. The Achaeans also learned
writingfrom the Minoans.
