Speaker: Mary Wilkins Jordan, Simmons College, Assistant Professor Presentation: Researching Communities to Prepare for the Future, Illinois State Library LSTA Grant Report, Lewis and Clark Library System Program abstract: What services are actually valued by your users? Which online resources are good investments? Is texting the best way to reach your young adults? Libraries often hold false assumptions or beliefs which have not been challenged with actual data. A program called "Top Library Building Trends" that was conducted at ALA Annual 2010 (June 28, 2010) by LLAMA BES. A panel of architects, librarians and consultants will provide an overview of new and exciting ideas in planning public and academic library facilities. Topics will include the rethinking of spaces for services, new building design, and other “must have” items to keep your library up-to-date. Each panelist will provide a brief presentation with slides. The entire panel will then field questions from the audience. One of the presentations from a program called "Where Did the Money Go?!: Understanding Hidden Expenses That Derail Small Scale Renovations". It was coordinated by LLAMA BES at ALA Annual 2010 (June 26, 2010). Many library leaders will find themselves planning a remodel of library space. Whether repurposing for a new use or just improving function and aesthetics, a limited budget can be eaten up by existing building issues: HVAC problems, asbestos abatement, interruption of systems, or simple staging logistics. Experts will share with attendees what to watch for, what questions to ask, and how to plan to anticipate these considerations so that project goals are met.

Learn how to orchestrate your organization’s message for results when speaking to politicians and the public. Hear from speakers who use quantitative and qualitative measures to get funding and advocate for their libraries. Leaders must select focused tools for their audience. Studies have shown that quantitative measures are useful to convince some groups while a story with the personal touch is what convinces others. Speakers: Laura K. This fast-paced program features presenters from 8-10 libraries who will share various types of informal assessment, the time commitment required, and how assessment led to service improvements throughout the library. Attendees will gain an understanding of how informal assessment can be incorporated into decision-making at all levels and lead to a culture of assessment.
