UN Millennial Development Goal 8 aims to develop a global partnership for development with least developed countries, landlocked countries, and small island developing states. The goal targets include developing an open, rule-based trading and financial system; addressing the special needs of least developed countries; and dealing comprehensively with developing country debt. Achieving this goal is important to provide support and resources for underdeveloped nations facing problems like lack of food, water, healthcare, and technology.
2. What’s the goal?
Develop a global partnership for development with Least Developed
countries (LDCs), landlocked countries and small island developing
states, their trading and financial system; and new information and
communication technology (FAO 2022)
3. Targets
(UN 2022)
8.A Develop further an open, rule based, predictable, non-discriminatory trading and
financial system
8.B Address the special needs of least developed countries
8.C Address the special needs of landlocked developing countries and small island
developing States
8.D Deal comprehensively with the debt problems of developing countries
8.E In cooperation with pharmaceutical companies, provide access to affordable essential
drugs in developing countries
4. Why is this important?
Many issues within our own nation also apply on a global scale. This meaning that many
underdeveloped nations deal with the same problems we face in the U.S while also not having adequate
resources or support to resolve, or even survive these situations. A famous quote by Thomas Reid states
that, “In every chain of reasoning, the evidence of the last conclusion can be no greater than that of the
weakest link of this chain, whatever may be the strength of the rest.“ Some of these countries lack in
basic needs such as food, safe water, medical supplies and technology. With that said the importance lies
in supporting our fellow communities on a global scale. Although separated by mountain ranges and
oceans we are all humans and rely on each other for survival.
6. Why this matters to me
• Last quarter (Winter 2022) I took a course with Dr. Cynthia Howson, T
ECON 320: Gender and Development which heavily focused on gender
development in developing nations. The readings and projects I took
from this course really opened my eyes to how harmful these local
issues we have affect countries on a global scale and to a further extent
in developing nations. Things like discrimination, lack of free
healthcare, and the political climate already have drastic affects on the
U.S. When taking those issues and applying them to a country who is
not as economically stable, things like mental health, physical
wellbeing and the death toll are impacted immensely which is what
interested me in this goal of using our privilege to help those in need.
