Experience working with and designing small, complex medical devices; especially with molded
plastic components

Experience working with micromachining equipment such as mills and ultra-precision lathes

Opto-Mechanical Engineer

Location: Washington D.C.

Job Summary:

Exciting opportunity for an Opto-Mechanical Engineer. The OME will be responsible for
designing, developing, and implementing a variety of simple to complex systems supporting
advancement of research. This activity requires a thorough knowledge of optical and mechanical
engineering concepts and application. The OME will work collaboratively with research
customers and department colleagues. The OME will work on projects from inception at the
concept development stage to completion at the product delivery stage, playing a primary role to
develop designs and products to meet customer specifications.

Principal Responsibilities:

Designs, develops, assembles, integrates, tests, and optimizes simple to complex opto-
mechanical systems for neurobiological research. Applications will include development of
systems, sub-assemblies and component parts.

Studies the project concepts, objectives, priorities, and requirements; analyzes user and potential
user input.

Identifies and establishes performance requirements involving optical stress, strain, thermal,
shock, vibration, acoustic, and radiation inputs and other system parameters and variables as
needed.

Collaborates in the development of robust systems that can be distributed and replicated at
multiple sites. Solid documentation management skills are required.

Assists with interpretation of requirements from research groups on short and long-term
projects.Translates the requirements into mechanical concepts, designs and plans.

Executes designs in a 3D MCAD and optical design environment and performs design analysis,
as needed.

Creates detailed drawings and perform document (revision) control.

Estimates up front costs, and then tracks time, effort, and supplies and materials costs to enable
proper charges to customers.

Preferred Qualifications:

BS/MS or above. Physics, Mechanical Engineering or equivalent work- related experience
required. MS in Physics, Optics, and Optical Engineering strongly preferred.
Experience working in a laboratory environment helpful.

Minimum of 5 years experience in developing Optical/Opto-Mechanical Systems.

Experience working in instruments for neurobiological research, preferred.

Ability to write software using LabView, Matlab, or Visual Studio tools is preferred.

Requires technical aptitude - complete knowledge of optical and mechanical engineering theory,
principles and practice. Experience with design and implementation of instrumentation and/or
automation required.

Ability to contribute to and understand core project requirements, which will be of a scientific as
well as technical nature, and suggest multiple options.

Ability to perform design work in a 3D CAD modeling environment. Autodesk Inventor®
experience preferred.

Ability to perform optical designs in appropriate software. ZEMAX or OSLO experience
preferred.

Experience with optical simulation tools required. Tracepro preferred.

Excellent detail drafting skills required. Knowledge of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing
preferred



Sr. Optical Engineer

Location: Bay Area

The Optical Engineer will develop and prototype optical systems for the Commercial
Communications product line. In this responsibility they also will aid in the integration of the
optical design into the system and the qualification. Responsibilities will include design and
development of optical systems and subsystems. The potential candidate is an individual who is
dedicated, articulate, energetic, and results oriented team player with positive attitude and
excellent people skills.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Develop and prototype optical system for commercial communications utilizing various optical
elements and sensors

Develop and implement optical test systems for commercial communications
Write detailed optical specifications and coordinate with optics vendors

Design test methodologies for system level validation and component test

Data collection and analysis of test links and from field trials

Understand and access technical trade-offs and recommend architecture/design direction to
reduce cost and manufacturing complexity

Aid as part of the NPI team in releasing the product to production

May require technical team leadership of design engineering staff, in a matrix environment

QUALIFICATION - KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS - EXPERIENCE:

5+ years of experience as optical engineer working with optical or laser based technology and
good understanding of an optical communication link

Excellent analytical skills and familiar with data processing and analytical software
(Matlab/Mathematical or similar)

Working programming knowledge in VB/VBA and Matlab

Hands on experience in aligning complex optical systems

Strong communication skills and prior experience with delivering a product from concept
through product development to manufacturing

Experience with products that need a thorough understanding of multiple disciplines including
electrical, mechanical, optical, and software engineering

Prior experience with delivering a product from concept through product development to
manufacturing

The ideal candidate will possess excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication
skills, is customer-centric, collaborative, and decisive




Sr. Mechanical Engineer

Location : NorthernCalifornia

Primary Function:
Design and manufacture of highly complex mechanical systems, including instruments and
accessories, for use in surgery. The successful candidate will conceptualize, develop and support
the mechanical design of surgical systems, taking individual responsibility for the successful
design of specific system components. The Sr. Mechanical Design Engineer is responsible for
developing, documenting, and validating new product designs, as well as improving existing
designs to meet the needs of customers.

Roles and Responsibilities

Design and document components and assemblies for instruments and accessories for surgical
systems

Investigate clinical requirements

Create product functional and design specifications

Create product architectures

Analyze and test product designs

Develop test protocols and perform component and instrument verification testing

Develop vendors to manufacture components

Develop initial fixtures and processes to assemble components

Develop product assembly instructions

Support production of final product by troubleshooting process and component problems

Provide engineering support to Manufacturing, Materials, Test Engineering, and Service to
facilitate transfer of designs

Develop Design History Files per FDA requirements

Act as technical mentor to Mechanical Engineers

Serve as Mechanical / Design Engineering member of Design Review Boards

Document, prepare and review patent submissions



Competency Requirements

BSME required, MSME preferred
Minimum 8 years experience designing commercial mechanical products

Hands-on engineering with the proven ability to work well in a team environment

Comfortable with all phases of the product development lifecycle including design,
implementation, debug, verification, qualification, and transfer

A passion for creating robust and reliable products with strength in design analysis

Mechanical design and analysis skills, including statics, dynamics, kinematics, strength of
materials and stress analysis

Strong mechanism experience preferred

Demonstrated knowledge of component manufacturing processes (including machining, wire
EDM, MIM, electro-polishing, brazing, heat treatment, injection molding)

Strong demonstrated knowledge of component selection criteria, and design for reliability and
manufacturability

Working knowledge of sterilization processes and designing for sterilization.

Proficiency using CAD to design and document mechanisms; ProE and/or SolidWorks preferred

Proficient at process development and creation of assembly instructions

Experience with small part assembly and manufacture

Working knowledge of materials bio-compatibility

Comfortable operating machine shop, measurement and test equipment

Medical product experience preferred

Ability to push/maneuver large medical equipment within our facility




Staff Mechanical Design Engineer

Location: Florida


The Staff Design Engineer, performs a variety of engineering assignments utilizing a wide range
of engineering principles including micro-electronics, MEMS, nano-particles, and microfluidics.
Works at an advanced technical expertise level involving planning development and design of
equipment/processes.

Reviews progress and evaluates results of multiple projects across various disciplines.

Coordinates teams of engineers and/or technicians as necessary to achieve project completion.

Facilitates and conducts engineering assignments involving projects of major magnitude and
scope.

Takes a leading position in activities involved with outside engineering vendors from beginning
of design process through feasibility and start-up processes.

Acts as advocate for continuous improvement of technology and processes.

Plans, conducts and directs research, development or engineering assignments.

Manages multiple projects across various disciplines.

Project management at outside vendors (overseas travel necessary).

Performs concept analysis and justification of capital and expense projects for future project
development of a medium complexity.

Prepares equipment, process, safety and materials specifications and conducts technical analysis
of vendor proposals.

Develops and implements equipment and/or process enhancements that will improve product
quality and yield, process sustainability and efficiency, and safety.


Education and Experience:

An MS in Engineering/Material/Natural/Physical Science or equivalent along with 7 years of
experience in design, project management and science

PhD in Engineering/Material/Natural/PhysicalScience or equivalent with 5 years of experience in
design, project management and science. A degree in Design Engineering is preferred.

Thorough knowledge and complete understanding and application of principles, concepts and
practices of Mechanical Design, preferably in the field of medical devices are required.

Product development experience is required.

Expertise in SolidWorks or equivalent is required.
Experience designing products with Ergonomics and Form Factors in mind are preferred.

Experience designing hand held devices is preferred.

Excellent written and oral communication skills are required.

Travel of up to 10% Domestic and International is required.




Sr. Manufacturing Engineer

Location: Bay Area

As part of the operations team this key role will be responsible for the optical-mechanical
production processes for the optical terminal. This individual will act as the key technical
resource for all optical and mechanical related tasks. As such they will act as the first line of
defense for all technical issues that are encountered during the manufacturing of this product
line.

This position is for a key hands-on contributor to the team who will use knowledge of opto-
mechanical manufacturing and assembly processes. They will work in concurrent engineering
teams to aid in the design for manufacturability.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Own and maintain manufacturing processes related to opto-mechanical process steps. These
processes include assembly, optical alignment, optical component testing, and mounting of
optics

Develop jointly with engineering the process documentation for new product and manage those
processes after production transfer

Train manufacturing personnel, in particular technicians and operators, on the the product and its
processes

Develop manufacturing tooling and fixturing

Own IQA and process inspection requirements and documentation; Review of manufacturing
test data

Manage disposition of defective material and production failures: troubleshoot failures and
develop rework and disposition procedures
First article qualification of new and second source suppliers as they are being brought on

Identify opportunities to improve yield and manufacturability of the product and own execution
of those changes

Own phase-in and phase-out of changes. The individual will act as the pull resource to bring
product and processes from engineering into production

Review test data for compliance; track process data to identify abnormalities and mine
opportunities for improvements

Track cost of quality

Conduct periodic presentations/reviews with the management team on critical projects and
process/performance metrics

Act as the technical interface to subcontractors and suppliers as required

QUALIFICATIONS - KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS - EXPERIENCE:

Bachelors of Science degree in Mechanical and/or Manufacturing Engineering

10+ years of experience in manufacturing and assembly of precision optical hardware

Background in alignment of complex optical systems

Experience in the design.tolerancing, and detailing of tools and fixtures required for opto-
mechanical assembling (kinematic mounts, assembly tools, test fixtures, etc.)

Effective presentation and communication skills

Experience with the concurrent engineering process as it applies to new product introduction

Solid understanding of optical test and test equipment

Familiar with mounting methodologies for optical components



Senior Optical Project Engineer
Location: Massachusetts

Position Description -
Looking for an experienced Optical Engineer to manage light measurement product development
team. The ideal candidate will use their experience in photometry and color science to support
spectrometer and lab radiometer customers, drive design and development efforts for OEM
customers and support ongoing optical measurement instrumentation production.

Other responsibilities and experience –

Directly participate in establishing and leading functional projects and may develop and
administer schedules and performance standards
Provide color science, photometry, and illumination optics expertise and support
Optical filter and detector design support for our line of radiometers
Solid state lighting/LEDs – measurement and application knowledge
Hands-on use of lab equipment (such as spectrometers, integrating spheres, radiometers, etc)
Provide optical calibration lab support
Work with external standards groups such as UL, IEC, etc, for product approvals

Requirements:
Education – BS in Optics, Physics or related Engineering discipline

5-10 years relevant light measurement product experience

Ability to work effectively with an internal cross-functional team along with managing external
resources

Proficiency with Labview software a plus

CAD, optics, thermal management and/or SSL lighting experience a plus

Additional Requirements:
Excellent oral and written communication skills
Desire to work in a small, fast-paced environment for a company focused on serving customers



Opto-Mechanical/Mechanical Engineer
Location: Midwest
The major responsibilities of the Instrumentation Engineer include:
Working with R&D personnel to convert a scientific/technical concept to an engineering
concept. This include to provide conceptual designs to the specified mechanical problems based
on the known solutions, to develop innovative solutions with R&D scientists, and to assess the
performance of the proposed solutions and finalize the concept for the engineering design and
prototyping,
Working with engineering department to transfer the engineering concept and solution to the
product design, review, prototype and finalization,

Testing and evaluating the designed system against the performance specification, and further
improving the design with engineering department until the design meets the specification and
finalized, helping to develop manufacturing processes and procedures for production.

The qualified candidate must have a Bachelor degree in Mechanical Engineering and Optical
Engineering.
Two-years experience in opto-mechanical system related design and analysis,
Understanding of opto-mechanical design principles and solid background in opto-mechanical
systems,
Capability in quantitative analysis of mechanical systems using software tools (such as FEA),
including stress, deformation, material characteristics and their impacts to the designs,
Being able to use CAD software, preferably UniGraphics, to create 3D models for the
conceptualization.




System Test Engineer

Location: Bay Area

System Test Engineer with a strong technical background in system level test design, planning,
and manufacturing integration of complex optical and RF/Microwave systems. Focused test
experience for optical/RF and digital communication sub-systems. Seeking 5+ years of test
engineering experience with hands-on manufacturing and test process development and
experience with test protocols for high level system integration.


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Pro-actively learns system as it is developed, utilizing medium to high volume operational test
concepts, requirements and other documents.

Work closely with the Design team to develop and establish manufacturing test strategies, and
provide DFT feedback to Design team.

Develop Test procedures, tools and test equipment to support manufacturing of products and/or
system level integration.

Create, update and maintain test project plans in support of development team activities
Develop test cases and test plans to support the integration of multiple optical and RF sub-
systems into a higher level assembly.

Coordinate manufacturing test requirements with System Design Team

HW/SW test procedures, set-up and execution with outsourced manufacturing locations

Integration and test troubleshooting and problem resolution with System Design team

Lead continuous improvement activities with respect to sub-assembly and system level testing



QUALIFICATIONS - KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS- EXPERIENCE:

Requires a BSEE degree or higher, or degree in other Engineering discipline.

Minimum of 5 years of experience in sub-assembly and system integration manufacturing test
environment.

Experience in writing test plans

Excellent written and communication skills

  • 2. Opto-Mechanical Engineer Location: Washington D.C. Job Summary: Exciting opportunity for an Opto-Mechanical Engineer. The OME will be responsible for designing, developing, and implementing a variety of simple to complex systems supporting advancement of research. This activity requires a thorough knowledge of optical and mechanical engineering concepts and application. The OME will work collaboratively with research customers and department colleagues. The OME will work on projects from inception at the concept development stage to completion at the product delivery stage, playing a primary role to develop designs and products to meet customer specifications. Principal Responsibilities: Designs, develops, assembles, integrates, tests, and optimizes simple to complex opto- mechanical systems for neurobiological research. Applications will include development of systems, sub-assemblies and component parts. Studies the project concepts, objectives, priorities, and requirements; analyzes user and potential user input. Identifies and establishes performance requirements involving optical stress, strain, thermal, shock, vibration, acoustic, and radiation inputs and other system parameters and variables as needed. Collaborates in the development of robust systems that can be distributed and replicated at multiple sites. Solid documentation management skills are required. Assists with interpretation of requirements from research groups on short and long-term projects.Translates the requirements into mechanical concepts, designs and plans. Executes designs in a 3D MCAD and optical design environment and performs design analysis, as needed. Creates detailed drawings and perform document (revision) control. Estimates up front costs, and then tracks time, effort, and supplies and materials costs to enable proper charges to customers. Preferred Qualifications: BS/MS or above. Physics, Mechanical Engineering or equivalent work- related experience required. MS in Physics, Optics, and Optical Engineering strongly preferred.
  • 3. Experience working in a laboratory environment helpful. Minimum of 5 years experience in developing Optical/Opto-Mechanical Systems. Experience working in instruments for neurobiological research, preferred. Ability to write software using LabView, Matlab, or Visual Studio tools is preferred. Knowledge of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing preferred Sr. Optical Engineer Location: Bay Area The Optical Engineer will develop and prototype optical systems for the Commercial Communications product line. In this responsibility they also will aid in the integration of the optical design into the system and the qualification. Responsibilities will include design and development of optical systems and subsystems. Sr. Manufacturing Engineer Location: Bay Area As part of the operations team this key role will be responsible for the optical-mechanical production processes for the optical terminal. This individual will act as the key technical resource for all optical and mechanical related tasks. As such they will act as the first line of defense for all technical issues that are encountered during the manufacturing of this product line. This position is for a key hands-on contributor to the team who will use knowledge of opto- mechanical manufacturing and assembly processes. They will work in concurrent engineering teams to aid in the design for manufacturability. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: Own and maintain manufacturing processes related to opto-mechanical process steps. System Test Engineer Location: Bay Area System Test Engineer with a strong technical background in system level test design, planning, and manufacturing integration of complex optical and RF/Microwave systems. Focused test experience for optical/RF and digital communication sub-systems. Seeking 5+ years of test engineering experience with hands-on manufacturing and test process development and experience with test protocols for high level system integration. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: Pro-actively learns system as it is developed, utilizing medium to high volume operational test concepts, requirements and other documents. Work closely with the Design team to develop and establish manufacturing test strategies, and provide DFT feedback to Design team.
