2. WHAT IS THIS EXPERIMENT?
This experiment shows how to
make ice melt faster without
actually using a source of
blowing heat.
3. WHAT YOU NEED TO CONDUCT THIS
EXPERIMENT
You will need :
• Two ice cubes
• Two bowls or plates
• Salt
• spoon
All of these ingredients can be found around the
house.
4. METHOD
You need to:
1. Place each ice cube into a separate bowl.
2. Sprinkle a spoon of salt into one of the bowls with an ice cube in it.
3. Watch the ice cube melt! Which one wins the melting race?!
Would anyone like to come up and look?
The one with the salt wins!
5. THE SCIENCE BEHIND IT
This may be cool, but you need to know why it works so well.
Salt makes the ice cubes melt faster. Plain water freezes at 0 degrees. Salt lowers the
freezing temperature of water, so the ice cube in salt would have to be made much
colder than 0 degrees to stay frozen. At room temperature this is not possible, so the
ice has to melt.
6. QUIZ TIME
1. How many things were there to make it? And what were they?
6
2 bowls 2 ice cubes 1teaspoon salt
7. QUIZ
2. What was the second step?
Sprinkle a tea spoon of salt into one of the
bowls with an ice cube in it.
9. FUN FACT!
• In Ireland, there are trucks that go through the icy streets and sprinkle salt onto the
roads. This keeps the vehicles from slipping and sliding all over the road! Now that’s
clever!
