3. Structure
The school has the president of the college who heads the
entire organization. Below the president are three vice
presidents who oversee specific departments. Below the
vice presidents are
the deans which head specific
departments then you have the department chairs who
oversee a specific area of a department. Last comes the
department heads that run specific programs in a
department.
4. Culture
The community college does earn its name because they
try to involve the community every chance they have.
There are many traditions that the college do on an annual
basis. Maintaining the organizations customs and traditions
are key to any great organization. This keeps the faculty
and the student involved as well as excited about being a
part of the college. Mrs. Neal heads a student society
called Gamma. The group is like a fraternity or sorority in a
four year institute. The only difference is that men and
women can take part in it and they do not have to go
through any over the top activities or initiations to be a
member. The group goes out to visit people in nursing
homes to talk to them and uplift spirits. The also
accompany the teacher to middle schools to help promote
the graphic design program. They show students how to
draw and use the computer software that student will use if
they decide to come to the graphic design program at Nash
community college.
5. Changes
The college administration decides not to upgrade to new computers
because they thought it was a waste of time and money. They decided that
because they paid $8,000 per computer seven years ago that the program
did not need new technology.
Other changes includes:
• Refusal to upgrade technology
• Refuse to give raises in six years
• paid new employee more money with less experience and
education
• Wanted teachers to report second jobs and get them
approved
6. Resistance
•
•
•
•
•
Teachers refused to report
extra income
Teachers refused to do
more than what was
required of them
Some teachers left and
went to competing schools
Teachers lost total respect
for the administration
Teachers feeling over
worked and unappreciated
7. Planning and strategies to
overcome the resistance
• Did not have a plan
• Though teachers would
just roll over
• Resistance was not
anticipated
• The college tried to
“Strong Arm” their
teachers
• Eventually decided to
reconstruct the ideas
they had
• Decided to include the
input from the teachers
• came up with a better
solution
8. Effectiveness of the
Change
The good
•
Teachers were allowed to work part time jobs based on their work performance
•
Teachers were being re-evaluated to see if they deserved a merit raise
•
New hires were paid based on their experience and education
•
Teachers received an official apology from the school
The bad
•
The school tried to threaten teachers with the loss of employment
•
The school show total disregard for the teachers feelings
•
The administration did not plan or consider anything before implementing
change
9. Great news
Mrs. Neal was one of the teachers
that was interviewed. She was one
of the teachers that fought for a
raise and new technology to
compete with rival schools that
seemed to take many of her
students. She received a grant that
allowed her to get new computers
for her computer lab which would
buy all of the equipment that must
cost a minimum of $10,000 per
item. She also received three 80
inch smart television in her lab to
help students follow her when she
is modeling in class. The school
also decided to buy a 3d printer
which the others schools in the
area do not have. The students are
very excited and full of ideas for the
upcoming art show at Nash
Community college. The school is
showing that she is a valued
10. Reflection
The leaders were very effective at sustaining the
change and overcoming the resistance. This was
only because they regrouped and decided not to
think with their egos. They now understand that
they cannot just throw out changes and hope for
it to stick. In the future I am sure they will
communicate a little better. Leaders that
communicate more clear and express why the
change must take place and how it will take
place will have fewer resistance when it comes to
change.
