CANDEREL WINS UDI COMMERCIAL
AWARD OF EXCELLENCE
Montreal, March 27, 2009 – At the Montreal Real Estate Forum, Canderel was
awarded the Urban Development Institutes prestigious “Commercial Award of
Excellence” for its development of the Bell Canada Campus on Nuns’ Island. The
soon to be LEED certified development was lauded for its use of sustainable
technology, its landscaping, the impressive size of the five building collegiate campus
and for the sheer speed at which it was delivered! A mere 17 months from start to
finish for Montreal’s newest landmark. The 1,400,000 square foot (840,000 rentable
square foot) development was completed early in 2009 and is now home to
approximately 4,000 employees. Located at the gateway to Montreal and just
minutes from the downtown core, the project is at the axis of the Bonaventure
Autoroute and the Champlain Bridge.
“We are extremely honoured by the recognition of the UDI. This is a testament to the
collaboration and hard work of hundreds of people who are on the team, most
notably our architect Brian Elsden Burrows and Reliance Construction,” said Jonathan
Wener, Chairman of Canderel Group of Companies and founding President of UDI
Quebec (1987). “We have been most fortunate to have a wonderful 20 year
partnership with Proment Corporation in our commercial developments on the island.
Samuel Gewurz, President of Proment Corporation, was critical to our success in the
planning of the project. His strategic interventions with all levels of government were
essential to our ability to deliver in a very short time frame. We are particularly
grateful to the City of Montreal and Verdun who assisted us in overcoming numerous
major challenges. They proved that real projects can be executed in real time. I am
extremely proud of the Canderel team who under the able leadership of Daniel D.
Peritz, our Senior Vice-President of Montreal, managed the myriad of complex details
to negotiate and deliver with mastery and professionalism. The Bell project was a
once in a lifetime opportunity to build for one of Canada’s leading communication
companies and the largest private sector build to suit office complexes to be
constructed in Montreal in over 30 years. We very much look forward to our next
challenge in the not too distant future.”
“We’re extremely proud with our new home on Nuns’ Island. Many people
contributed to the success of the project and our people have had a very positive
reaction to the new environment,” said Maarika Paul, Senior Vice-President
Corporate Services of Bell Canada Enterprises.
