online learning team of faculty, instructional
designers, and librarians create a series of
high-impact online courses which use only
OER-based instructional materials. These
courses are designated as “digital open
courses. “

16. ▷ ELI Runner-Up for Excellence in Education Award
○ NOVA’s ELI was honored by the Virginia
Community College System (VCCS) as a
runner-up for the Excellence in Education
Award for Best Practices in Teaching Face-
to-Face, Online, and Student Success for the
Digital Open Initiative.

17. ➢ VCCS Z x 23 Grant
○ Building on the work done at ELI and with
grant funding provided by the VCCS, NOVA
works towards creating a fully-OER liberal arts
degree pathway. This degree pathway includes
a mixture of online courses, hybrid courses,
and face-to-face courses.
■ 16 campus courses piloted or adopted
OER on the Liberal Arts AA degree
pathway
● Served 4000 students over three
semesters and saved students over
$400,000 during the span of the
project
● Development of OER Policy

18. ➢ zELI Zero Textbook Cost Degree Pathways
○ NOVA Online partnered with Lumen
Learning to release a complete digital
open degree pathway to help other
institutions offer zero textbook cost
degress. Published with open, Creative
Commons licenses, anyone can freely
use, revise, remix, and repurpose the
courses.

19. ➢ Achieving the Dream OER Degree Initiative

pathways in three degree programs and
be available to all 75,000 students at
NOVA’s six campuses and online

from across the state to support making
greater use of OER.
