MUSCLES OF THE ABDOMEN
Mrs Musyimi JM
Review of Important Bony Framework
Inguinal ligament
• Fibrous band extending from the
anterior superior iliac spine to the
pubic tubercle.
• It is an important anatomical
landmark and denotes the
transition of the pelvis to the
lower limb.
Layers of Abdomen
Superficial fascia
• Exist in two layers
 Camper’s - superficial fatty layer
 Scarpa’s - deep membranous layer

within rectus sheath
• Origin: pubic symphysis
and pubic crest
• Insertion: linea alba
• Nerve supply: T12
Actions of Muscles of AAW
• Support and protect abdominal viscera
• Forceful expiratory acts
• Movements of trunk
– Flexion of trunk (lumbar spine)
– Lateral flexion of trunk
– Rotation of trunk
• Act as accessory muscles of respiration
• Expulsive acts eg defacation
• Suspension of testis
• Tensing the linea alba
