This document introduces S.P.I.C.E., a framework for analyzing world history using six categories: Social, Political, Interaction with Environment, Cultural, and Economics. Students are assigned articles about North Korea and tasked with identifying concepts relating to each S.P.I.C.E. category. They will then discuss how the issues surrounding North Korea relate to the categories to gain a deeper understanding of the topic. As a group, students are to determine their perspectives on questions about North Korea and military action.

10. Your Task
1. Explore the issues surrounding North Korea’s recent activities by assigning
each group member one of the provided articles.
2. Using the SPICE Graphic Organizer, list ideas/ concepts/ questions/
connections to the Rio Olympics that relate to each SPICE category.
3. Share your with your group what you put in your SPICE chart and why you put
it there. Discuss with your group and jot down brief notes of what your peers
wrote.
4. As a group, begin discussing the four main questions. Determine where you
stand as a group and individuals, jotting down key points in your Graphic
Organizer.
