A ‘Telenovela’ means ‘Television novel’
Soaps normally spoken in Spanish and aired
in Latin American, although they are similar to
British Soaps they have distinctive differences
such as storylines that can last up to a year
Is the definition clear & easy to understand?
In a scene where a couple are kissing, they
normally have a long-lasting relationship, so it
portrays a higher set of morals than British
Soaps. It is only recently that these soaps
have started introducing more taboo subjects.
Examples of Soaps in this sub-genre: Ugly Betty
Because the audience of these Telenovelas
have a Catholic upbringing, sex is a very taboo
subject, so extreme storylines that are shown
in these Soaps are not supposed to be
Clear examples of Codes & Conventions:
believable, unlike British Melodramas or
Realism Soaps.
Telenovelas are intended to be seen as a form
of entertainment.
